I know this site is primarily one of former adventists. Part of getting rid of the adventist sunglasses is in learning what is truth and what is error. I have been reading the bible in search of that answer. I have also been reading other sources and would like your feedback on one of them. The site is Critical Issues Commentary. It seems to me to provide some really helpful writing. One commentary in particular that I would like your feedback on http://cicministry.org/commentary/issue35.htm The Biblical Doctrine of Human Depravity by Bob DeWaay. CIC is not an anti adventist type of site and as such does not really even mention them. It does however seem to teach a lot of sound doctrine that we as formers were never privy to. Kent, You're right, CIC has many useful studies in their collection. I have collected and saved several of them. DeWaay takes some strong positions that will strike nerves, and some will object. It goes without saying, we don't have to agree with everything said on a website to find blessings there. The CIC studies show a firm grasp of God's sovereignty and the Reformation solas, along with a sensitivity to non-Biblical ideas that we can understand as formers. In the study you linked on depravity, he makes the excellent point that, "...it is incorrect to say that the body is fallen and sinful but that the mind is not. It is likewise in error to teach as some have that the material world and the material part of man is fallen but that what is "spirit" is pure and unsullied by sin. The whole person, body, soul and spirit is fallen and sinful, needing salvation." Adventists have always emphasized the second point in the above quote, that the whole person needs salvation. However, they contradict themselves when they do not acknowledge that depravity includes the mind, our capacity to desire and obey God. Without regeneration, we are incapable of seeing our need to repent, or of submitting to God's rule over our minds. A prominent local SDA pastor has spoken for many when he stated that he will not submit his mind to God, because that part of him must remain "free." Martin C | ||

John 8:36 says, "If the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." Thus, it is ONLY freedom in Christ that is truly freedom. Whatever people think they gain by not submitting to Christ is only an illusion of freedom, but is in reality slavery to sin! | ||

Kent, I just read both of those articles you linked, and found them to be sound, balanced, and well-written. I also read several of the other articles on that site. They seem to square with some things I had suspected about certain popular "ministries" and doctrines. Thank you! | ||

With the exception of their Dispensationalism, the linked website seems orthodox on the topics I read. There are, however, better websites in my view (e.g., check out www.monergism.com ). I feel like a young lad walking through a candy store while visiting the online bookstore at www.monergism.com . Importantly, the website you linked accurately teaches Christology and soteriology. I would grade it as a "better than most" Christian website. Thanks for sharing. Dennis Fischer |
