I posted this over a year ago, but it seems fitting to do it again.

One morning last spring, I woke up and in that "just waking up/ dream state" and heard plainly "read John 6." It seemed so real. I went about my usual routine, checking e-mail, coffee, and still had that thought of "read john 6". So I read John 6.
I homeschool my children and we had been using a great Bible curriculum. For our Bible class, I don't have any partiuclar plan. We just go as far as we want per day and I usually don't read ahead so sometimes I didn't know exactly what was to be the topic of this particular day's lesson( this is something I need to work on!!). John 6 first starts out with feeding the 5000. THEN:

"Then Jesus said to them, "most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world."
Then they said to Him, "Lord, give us this bread always."
And Jesus said to them, "I AM THE BREAD OF LIFE. HE WHO COMES TO ME SHALL NEVER HUNGER, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN ME SHALL NEVER THIRST." John 6:32-35

An hour or so later as I started reading the Bible lesson for the day, my jaw dropped. The topic that day for study and discussion was the Israelites receiving the manna. The manna story had always been taught to me as a Sabbath story. I never saw the connection between manna and Christ. The Lord was showing me THE TRUE BREAD OF LIFE!! I had the exact reference to go to in the New Testament to show my children what the manna represented. I know this is the second time I posted this story, but it was such a powerful moment for me.

Wow!
Thanks for reposting Leigh.
It is amazing how symbolic all the things in the Old Testament really are- even the manna. It is fitting that God would give them 'bread' from heaven as a shadow of the true bread.
Richard/Stan
Concerning dreams and visions ; I am still studying- trying to understand when it is referring specifically to the Jews or the last days.
The Bible talks about the sun darkening in Joel, it also talks about it in Matthew and it talks about it in Revelation and also in Acts.
Perhaps someone here can answer this question though I fully intend to research it.
Has the sun turned to blackness and the moon into blood? I recall as a child hearing that these have already come to pass. If it has then maybe I'm not understanding the timeline in Revelation?

Stan,

If God no longers speaks through dreams and visions, then what do you make of EGW's visions/dreams vs. the dreams of the two men who were warned against EGW?

Satan couldn't have been behind both Ellen's dreams and these men's dreams could he???

Alnadean,

Acts says that the passage in Joel had been fulfilled already (at Christ's first coming). Jesus does, in Matthew 24 and Revelation 6, prophesy these things happening again, right at the second coming of Christ.

But the past fulfillments that you were taught in the SDA church are false--they were merely natural occurrences. Here are a couple of good links about the SDA claims:

http://www.ellenwhite.org/egw42.htm

http://www.truthorfables.com/Signs_in_Heaven.htm

Of important note is that the Lisbon earthquake was both less powerful and less deadly than the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake. I wonder if SDA revelation seminars are STILL saying that the Lisbon earthquake is the fulfillment of prophecy as EGW claimed! If so, who would listen to them when there was just a worse one last year?!

Leigh:

I got goose bumps! Thanks for sharing. I homeschool as well, so I'll keep this referenced away. BTW, what Bible curriculum do you use?

Leigh, I remember when you posted that story before, and how amazed I felt. It still has the same effect on me. Praise God!

Patria,
The curriculm is called "FIRM FOUNDATIONS Creation to Christ." It is put out by New Tribes Mission. We have taken our time with this curriculum. It has taken a little over 2 years for us to complete. I bought it before we left Adventism. After we left and started attending our present church I heard many of the same teachings at church that we were learning from this study.

How old are your children? Mine are 12 and 9.

Leigh and Patria, my prayers are with you ladies. We homeschooled for 16 years. My one piece of unsolicited advice I offer to every homeschool mom is "educate yourself about learning styles". It will go a LONG way toward helping you in your task of teaching. No no, I take that back. I offer another piece of advice, "take pictures, jot down a quick note about something that is happening, and keep yourself a scrap book". I WISH I WISH I had done this as we went along. It would have been such a precious thing to have to look back on and remember.

Lydell, Thanks for your prayers! Last year a friend of mine loaned me a book about the different styles of learning. It was very helpful. My two daughters are completely different learners. Great idea about taking pictures!

Jeremy,
I would agree with you that those visions you spoke of were from God. Let me clarify my position on visions. I believe there are no visions from God which would in any way be new revelation--even if it did not directly contradict scripture. The canon is closed-period!

However, my wife Marti when she was in the hospital with a stroke last October (also as reported in the last Proclamation) when she thought she was dying, heard a very distinct male voice say "I will be with you. Do not be afraid. I will take care of you." Well, since He has taken care of her, I have been forced to change my previous dogmatic position that I wasn't sure it was possible.

I also know that God reveals Himself to people in foreign lands who He has elected to salvation, as many have come to know Christ in this way who would not otherwise had the gospel preached to them.

I think Lydell's experience related above is also valid.

But there are other areas of pentecostalism that are always claiming direct visions from God, and their theology is false. We just have to be very cautious, as the delusions of Satan will get more subtle as we get closer to time, strong enough to deceive the very elect if possible, but thankfully do to God's preserving power, that will not be possible.

I have not had any visions, but God has spoken to me. The first time I was living in Texas and wanted to return to Virginia. I was phoning about jobs. I had called this one hospital and spoke to the rehab director. I made an appointment to see him when I went to VA, along with 2 other appointments in VA. After I hung up the phone, with this director, this distinct male voice said to me, "that job is yours". I looked around the room, then I said, "God, I do not know if that is me thinking this job is mine or your telling me, so I will not believe it until I go to the interview". I went on the interview and the job was offered to me on the spot.
The second time God spoke to me was when I was looking for a church to attend last year, May 2004. I was driving to my home health patient's house and I heard this voice in my head say, "Go to that big church off 95 on Russell Road". I said out loud, "that BIG church" and the reply I got was, "yes, that big church". This second one was a voice in my head, but the one about the job was outside my head, as I looked around the room for it. So, God does speak to us to help us individually, in our walk with Him.
As always, He is so AWESOME.

Stan, I agree with you 100% that visions/dreams from God will not contain any new revelation. The Bible has been completed, as you said.

I'm not debating the issue of the Bible being completed or not but our understanding of God is NOT complete. We have so much more to understand and learn.

But Richard, would you like to clarify? If you leave the possibility open that the canon is not closed, then that is where a person is most vulnerable to deception. That is why the SDA church thrives today on the belief that God is still revealing new information.

Stan, since I was gone all day yesterday to a conference and trying to keep from getting hit by other cars, on the rainy freeway, I will now try to clarify.

I believe that the Canon is closed but not the revelation of who God is or His will for us in our lives. God is continually "speaking" to me and revealing His will and direction for me and my life.

The foundation for my belief is the Bible alone but God opens my heart and mind and emotions to a greater revelation of Himself and who he is on a daily basis. How He does this with me is a continual source of amazement to me.

He has revealed insights through dreams, prophetic words of encouragement spoken to me, sermons, Bible study, prayer in my "prayer closet" ie: my desk, and even the words of children who in their simple faith can give a powerful witness of who He is.

My God is a BIG God and is not restricted in how he comunicates to any of us.

In Christ,

Richard
