Greetings,

I am not from an SDA background.
I came across this website through reading some posts on ChristianForums.
The reason I joined is because a few weeks ago I read a post here which had listed a document which was written by a 'cult counsellor' in the U.S. This same document I had previously read on another website, as I had already used this for working with my own family who are involved with a different coercive group here in oz, which has it's roots in the U.S.

My parents have an SDA family living next door to them, and the SDA couple have given my mum a DVD about Jesus and an SDA book (I guess this is standard issue material).

I briefly met the SDA man next door while watering the front lawn at my parents one day while they were away. I had the immediate impression that his smile towards me was unusual i.e. it struck me as a 'devouring' kind of smile, if such a thing exists! :-)

Anyway, I look forward to reading on the site about things SDA and SDA recovery.

Thanks.

Hi Mtnviscacha, I'm a newbie too.

The websites Mwh listed are all great. SDAoutreach.org has so many easy to read articles as well as some great to-the-point Mp3s. (I've actually downloaded them into my ipod.

One of the things I've learned about the SDA church is that they don't go around spreading the Gospel as Jesus commanded. Their message is either the health message, or the "Sabbath Truth" and it's a way to basically sign people up to Adventism. They also baptize you into the church, as opposed to baptizing you as a Christian. (Or at least that's what my husband's particular church does)

I hope that helps!

Welcome to the forum, Mtnviscacha and Grace_alone!

Grace_alone, you're right about SDA baptism--they baptize them into SDA church membership and make them agree to a "baptismal vow" saying that they believe in the doctrines of the church, that Ellen G. White is a prophet and her writings are inspired by God, that the SDA church is the only one true Remnant Church, etc. SDA baptism is not about Jesus Christ. They baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, but they teach, as their prophet says, that these are "the three great powers of heaven" and the "three holiest beings" (Tritheism).

In reality, there is nothing Christian about Adventist baptism!

Thanks Jeremy! You know it's so funny, I'd like to ask this question to one of my more fanatical in-laws... The Jw's think they are the remnant, as do the Mormons, and of course the SDA's. Which one is right?

Also, as I was aware of the way they baptize, I didn't realize about Tritheism. 'Learn something new every day around here!

graeme and Leigh Anne,
Welcome to FAF. For people who are not of Adventist background, this is a good place to find out what SDA believe.
For those who are transitioning out of the SDA church, it is a good place to vent, when necessary, and tell what God has led you to and how He did it.
I am always amazed how awesome God is.

Hello All!

Graeme and Leigh Anne,

I also want to welcome you to FAF. I've been here just a few months myself - and what a blessing!

Lately I've posted a bit over on CARM, and I want to say a big THANK YOU TO EVERYONE HERE for the respectful and nurturing tone of your posting.

You will find that this is a group of loving Seekers who will respectfully entertain any of your questions.

I am grateful for the safety that I find on this site.

Let's All Keep On Seeking!

Leigh Anne,

The SDAs would think that your question is very easy to answer: they're "the Remnant Church" because they're the only ones out of those three churches who "keep the commandments of God" (since they "keep" "all Ten") and have the "Spirit of Prophecy" (blasphemously meaning Ellen G. White). Of course, when you factor in other Sabbath-keeping churches, they're only argument is "Spirit of Prophecy" = EGW because "Spirit of Prophecy" = EGW. And for some reason, they think they can always insert "Ten" in front of "commandments"! :-)

Of course, they fail to recognize that Revelation does not even mention a "Remnant church"--and in modern translations the word for "remnant" is simply correctly translated "rest of" ("the rest of her children"). I don't see any group claiming to be the "Rest Of church"! :-)

Warm welcome to you, Mtnviscacha!

Ask questions, post, lurk/read/learn, tell us/teach us things, join us!

I get what you mean by that 'devouring smile'. I am sure the man had the best intentions in his heart, but we were taught to get as many as we could into THE ADVENTIST TRUTH and THE REMNANT CHURCH. Some are more insatiable than others about that, though.

Personally, I was never very enthusiastic about it, growing up in the church. I hated being told to go out and 'witness', passing out pamphlets, etc.. (or worse, selling their magazines door to door one summer) Now, I can just live my faith--loving my neighbor; let the Holy Spirit shine Christ in me--out of me, if so; and answer questions as the Holy Spirit leads, if asked about my beliefs. Not have the entire nieghborhood or world on my childhood and teen consciousness back then.

You wrote an apt, excellent phrase--
'SDA Recovery'. Thanks.

In Christ,
Cathy
