I haven't been on the forum in quite some time so I don't know if I'm repeating old news or not (a brief search returned nothing on the subject.)

I heard recently from my father that Sam Bacchiocchi has a severe case of liver cancer. I don't know anything more about his condition, but thought some of you may be interested in this news if you had not heard it yet.

I had heard recently that he had liver cancer and that there was some question about whether it might be a metastasis from an earlier colon cancer.

I'm praying he will truly know Jesus.

I don't want to seem irreverant of his illness, but one of the things driven home by my ex was that vegetarians and those who followed "God's diet" did not get diseases like 'the rest of us'. is there a gossip factor when something like this happens to one that I'm sure the religion holds up as an example? At least in theory, my ex held to a 'get what you deserve' mentality concerning illnesses...stating 90% of all diseases are preventable by lifestyle choices. Is that somewhat universal? What does the church 'do/say' when one in his position disproves the rhetoric?

I do not wish to take his illness lightly either, but it seems the sda's take to the extreme the fact that many diseases are prevented by lifestyle; and vegetarianism being foremost in their lifestyle category. Having been a nurse for 30+ years, I have seen so much illness; some preventable of course, but the attitude that one is not going to get something such as colon ca because they're eating only vegetables is putting their heads in the sand! I'm kind of thinking that we see a lot of colon ca among sda's because they don't think they need checkups as the rest of us do even if that particular disease runs in their family. Case in point: one of my oldest brothers died a few ago of advanced colon ca. Cancer is in our family's genes, but he had become a strict vegetarian when he married, and I firmly believe he and his wife thought he was "immune" to colon ca. So.....no checkups until he was terribly ill; finally went to the Dr.who upon performing a colonoscopy, found a huge tumor that had already metastasized to his liver, then eventually to his lungs.

This does not mean I do not advocate a healthy lifestyle, but to me that does not include avoiding certain foods and then thinking you are "above" getting a bad disese because you're doing the food thing right. God created all things, and He did not exclude certain things. Look at Peter's sheet.

I too, will include Mr. Bacchiochi in my prayers that he will truly come to Jesus Christ. Watching my brother die in abject fear of his not knowing whether or not he had salvation was a terrible thing!

I praise God always. Knowing Jesus Christ as my personal Savior is the greatest joy in my life.

P.S. I have experienced breast ca, and keep up with my checkups on a regular basis. It's in the genes :-)

Another Adventist myth I have encountered is that Seventh-day Adventists do not have to suffer as much as others in their dying days. Somehow, they zealously claim, their dying phase is greatly abbreviated in contrast to others with far less trauma and pain. On the contrary, it would seem that a stronger physical body would actually prolong the inevitable encounter with the grim reaper.

Adventists believe that the health laws are some type of "old covenant of health" and that by obeying or disobeying them, they're getting a reward, God's blessing in a solid health or His curse in sickness. "Ministry of Healing" with it's Great Physician, instilled the idea of health as being a matter of old covenant type of faith, in which those who have enough faith and are obedient to the laws of health are protected by God.

I have a relative, my mom's uncle who died 10 years ago because of cancer. It shattered his faith greatly, because he saw himself as betrayed by God since he died in humiliation. He pondered a long time the following text, which I think is relevant about the way adventists see the health issue.

"He said, "If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you."" (Exodus 15:26)

Very good observations, Ardyj, they are indeed living on another planet, not doing checks, living as they are not like other mortals.

I was Bacchiocchi's translator when he would come to Southern California and preach in the Spanish churches. We developed a really good working relationship through the years. I translated almost all of his original book From Sabbath to Sunday into Spanish. I used a great deal of his material in my classes when I taught theology at the SDA seminary in Lima, Per™. At that time I was also translating Des Ford's articles in Ministry magazine for my theology students. Over time... the gospel won out over the Sabbath! Praise God. I'm sorry to hear about Sam. It's never a good thing to suffer anything, for whatever reasons.

When I think back on all those years of Sabbath-Sunday study for me, I now see that there really isn't much difference between Roman Catholicism and Silver Springerian Adventism. You swap one set of confidence in human works for another - hook, line, and institutional sinker. Amazing. Amazing, how at one time we believed all that. It took the Spirit years of working with me through many different agents showing me the preciousness of Jesus, before I walked out "once and for all" from the SDA church.

May the Lord provide the promises of Isaiah 53 for our brother Sam, and may he indeed find that there remains another Sabbath for the people of God, and once and for all enter into Him. May that be our prayer for all our Adventist brothers and sisters.

Ramone, when were you last in Silver Spring. That is Maryland, is it not. I loved in Northern VA for 24 years-1976-2002(3 of those years I was traveling to Florida and Texas).

Hey, one of my bros-in-law lived in Silver Spring in the late '90s. In fact, he was ordained there in 1998... Can't remember which church tho - some of the family is Bartlett, and the others there are Carrenos...

Sorry to take this off in a different direction! I will pray for Mr. B as well.

Dennis and Ardy and Jackob, what great points you make re: the Adventist belief that their health observances will make their lives longer and their dying shorter.

In the very early 80s a friend of mine died in her mid-30s from metastatic breast cancer. She had been a loyal Adventist and a missionary to Ethiopia during the traumatic time of the civil war there. When she was first diagnosed, she went through a great deal of guilt and self-recrimination, fearing that her cancer was the result of the fact that she would occasionally eat chicken. I don't believe she ever resolved that deep suspicion.

She adopted a diet cure, following her chemo, restricting her diet severely and emphasizing great quantities of carrot juice and coffee enemas (never coffee drunk the normal way, of course!). During the weeks right before her death, when her cognition and alertness were impaired, she actually wanted pizzaóbut of course, there was never a thought that she would actually eat it.

It is amazing to me how deeply twisted the thinking processes become when one believes that a lie is actually truth. One's whole frame of reference for relating to reality is altered. In a way, the deeply ingrained indoctrination yields something that often resembles some form of emotional or mental illness.

I remember an Adventist clinical psychologist I knew and respected years ago saying, "When a person breaks from sincerity, he ultimately breaks from reality." When people are deceived into believing untruth as normative, they cannot respond to reality as it actually is. They don't even recognize it.

Haroldo, good to see you on the forum! Just by way of introduction, Haroldo, who has actually been a forum member for some time, has taken on the responsibility of acting as moderator on the Spanish forum on this site. He's working closely with Mwh (Martin) in the Spanish online ministry www.exAdventista.com.

Yes, Lord, bless Dr. B and bring Him your grace in his hour of need!

I was born & raised in the Takoma Park/Silver Spring area... halfway between DC and the GC, I say! I lived there until late 1999, basically, when I went to LaSierra in Riverside. Actually, I was born at WAH before it was "WAH"... when it was "Washington Sanitarium" (isn't it fun to tell people you were born in a sanitarium?). But I say, Diana, you were in northern VA for my whole life on the east coast!

The Carrenos, Leigh Anne? I went to Sligo & Takoma Academy with Dr.Carreno's daughter in my class. Class of '96, but I detoured to SVA for my last year of high school and graduated there.

Colleen, your comments about health remind me of that ironic little article Dale put in the Jan/Feb Proclamation about coffee!

my husband's grandfather had colon cancer and his mom had breast cancer. not sure whether or not they went in for the recommended screenings. the ironic thing is, most of his family is in healthcare (physicians, nurses). i would think they would advocate following the screening guidelines that are out there for cancer. they honestly believe somehow that God will reward them for practicing sertain "health laws" of the church by giving them a long life and less suffering at the time of their death? i think common sense tells you a balanced diet plus some exercise and a good social network may give you better quality and perhaps length of life, but one doesn't need a church prophet to tell you that information.

Yes, Nicole, there is a strong subconscious sense that God will honor them for their strict dietary observances. They are confused and disillusioned when their careful discipline fails to yield God's "blessing".

I am sad to hear that Dr. Bacchiocchi is so serioulsy ill. I will be praying for him. Although I seriously disagree with him, I have nothing against him as a person and hope he will recover.

I also hope he will find the truth!
