I did Romans 8 and Ephesians out of the NIV, but I've moved to NASB because it's a more precise word-for-word translation rather than thought-for-thought. I seemed to me to make sense, as long as I was scrutinzing words, to have each one be as accurate as possible. If I didn't use NASB, I'd probaby use ESV. But hey, if it's a genuine translation, the Bible is the Bible--there's great blessing from memorizing in ANY version!

Clear Word for me... (just kidding). Actually HW, I use the NIV. I'm not one to get too wrapped up in versions (within reason). I believe that the Holy Spirit is the one who does the teaching, and to be quite honest, I believe he is even capable of overcoming the errors in the "Unclear Word." Hey, He brought us out of Adventism didn't he?

It's NIV for me but some of the psalms are especially beautiful in King James.
Hi Leigh Anne, thanks for missing me. I still lurk when I can but I've never been busier than I am now. I just started a new career of teaching Defensive Driving to California state employees. It took me a year to get through the training and contract process but I'm starting to roll now. And like you Colleen, it feels good to be teaching again. I did a lot of public speaking years ago so it's starting to come back.
Does anyone know the proper way to dispose of a damaged Bible? I found one at the bottom of a freeway off ramp the other day and it had been run over several times but still intact. When I saw what it was I retrieved it out of respect for it. There is no way to identify it's owner so I want to properly "retire" it. Is it done like one would do an American flag-by burning or burying? Or if someone could use a large-print king James version that is damaged but 100% intact and readable I will be happy to mail it.
Happy Memorial Day and may God continue to bless America and our troops.

You do sound busy.

CW,
I always enjoy seeing you. I love that you came here, to check up on your daughter's boyfriend.

I know my dad would have done the same for me. When I left the Adventist Church last year, he was already too ill to read anymore. Had he been able, I know he would have researched things like his Bible, and this forum, to try to figure out my exit. I know he would have studied his way out of Adventism, just as I did, with the Bible alone as my guide.

In any case, I know he accepted Jesus. I prayed over him steadily, outloud and silently, whenever I was with him. Often I would see tears, even though he couldnt talk. I bought him the Bible on tape, and he listened for hours. I was able to assure him of my salvation, despite what others may have said around him about me.

One day I watched a sermon with him on 3ABN (Adventist TV satellite that played regularly at his house). The most pure gospel sermon was preached. Not a hint of Ellen White, or other additions to the gospel. Just a simple call at the end..."do you trust in Jesus as your Lord and Savior" I was amazed! (I think to this day that perhaps God beamed in another sermon onto 3ABN. Dont know who the preacher was.) I asked my dad if he had accepted Jesus as his Savior, and if he knew that he was saved, and he nodded yes, with tears streaming down his face.

My dad died around Easter. Seeing you post again, and thinking of the lengths you go for your daughter, just reminds me of the kind of father I had. Its a good memory.

Hi Diana and lori. Even though I don't post much anymore I will always have a special place in my heart for this forum. When my daughter D asked me once off handedly what I thought of SDA I said something like, "I think it's okay but a bit to legalistic for my taste. And if they want to worship on Saturday instead of Sunday, so what."
I don't know if it was some subtle changes in her or some comments I heard her make but I began to get a little worried. Then the Holy Spirit started making me a lot worried and impressed upon me to research SDA. Well, I found out that it does no good to type in SDA and such on the internet because you keep coming up with pro-SDA stuff and no truth. And I had never heard of Ellen White so I didn't even know to research her. There were several weeks of extreme frustration before I finally found out about Dale Ratzlaff and I still can not remember how I "stumbled" onto him. God does work in mischievous ways. Anyway, once I ordered a couple of his books it opened up other resources to find the truth about SDA. In fact he lists this web site in the back of "THE TRUTH ABOUT SDA TRUTH" so that's how I finally found my way here.
And my wife told me the other day that D said "I am finally over J". Maybe someday she will even appreciate all of our prayers to protect her from SDA. Whether she ever does or not I would do it the same way again and trust God to reveal the truth to her as He did this time.
If any of you are California state employees we may meet because there are only eight of us in the entire state that teach this required Defensive driver course.

Lori,
I am so sorry about your Dad. It is so good to know that he knew Jesus before he died and that he knew he was saved. Tears are in my eyes as I write this. They are tears of joy for you and your father.
Isn't our God so awesome??

Lori,
I am so very sorry about your dad. But like Diana said, it is a comfort to know that he was saved in Jesus. That means you get to spend eternity together.
My heart goes out to you. Know that you and your family continue in my prayers

Blessings

THank you so much for continued prayers. For Dad's sake, he is at rest, and I think with Jesus already, although I havent fully studied that, but that is the sense I have at this point, in my Spirit. He is no longer suffering from a ugly disease.

Holidays like today are hard. Dad came from a military family. In addition, the last 14 years we went to my parents house for campmeeting over Memorial day weekend.

Please keep praying for my mom and son as well. They miss him terribly.

Back to the thread! My dad memorized lots of scripture. The last couple years, I was reading the Bible outloud to him when I was with him. Sometimes it was the only thing that would calm him when he was agitated. He could barely speak, but when I would start a passage, he would try to finish it. He preferred King James, and would grunt when I read from NIV, and would try to correct me! I have asked for his Bible.

Im starting to memorize Ephesians as a result of this thread...

"I Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus, by the will of God....
To the saints in Ephesus, the faithful in Christ Jesus."

Thats all I have to far. We could put ourselves in the text:

I Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus, by the will of God....To Lori and the saints of FAF, the faithful in Christ Jesus. Grace and Peace to you...!

(Im not being frivolous or disrespectful here)
It makes it real to me, and helps me learn.

Anyone else on Ephesians?

Hi Lori;
Yep, I'm working on memorizing Ephesians. Not much further than you at the moment. I find writing out the verses helps set them in my mind.

Of course it brought back an old memory of having to write " I will not do......" one hundred times on a blackboard when I was in elementary school. Ha.

But whatever works...

Blessings

Today in church a young man presented a beautiful and well done recitation from memory of Paul's epistle to the Phillipians.

He had memorized the complete text of Phillipians from Eugene Peterson's paraphrase The Message. What an amazing presentation as he spoke as if in the character of Paul. And this in front of 2000 people. It blew me away.

Now if I could just remember my password,

Blessings all,

Randy

Glad to see you remembered it, Randy! That must have been an amazing experience. it's really pretty girpping to realize what Paul actually experienced, isn't it? And to realize how he honored the Lord Jesus in and through everything.

I think of Paul as a sort-of "mentor"—an example of how to live single-mindedly for the purpose of honoring the Lord Jesus. I pray that God will teach me truth and make Himself real as He did to Paul (and Timothy, and Barnabas, and Epaphroditus...)

Awesome experience, Randy!
