1 John 1:5 - 2:2

DON'T LET LENGTH OF POST SCARE YOU!

FUN ACTIVITY
Intro. Before diving into questions on this section let us first get a handle on the “big picture” of these verses. There is a fun activity to do this. It is called homiletics. Don’t let that word scare you. Homiletics helps a person think deeply about what they are reading; helps them remember the “big picture” of the passage - so when they are looking for a particular verse they will remember where in the Bible they saw it.

Step 1: Content

Why do the Content? It helps you remember the details of the passage and allows God to speak to you personally.

ACTIVITY 1:
Make a list of the different events, topics, or conversations in 1 John 1:5 - 2:2. The list can lump one or more verses together. They can be complete sentences or just words/phrases. See if you can make a list between 10 - 20 items.

Content Example: Using Heb.1:1-2:4

Heb. 1:1-3: In past God spoke through prophets; Last days spoken by Son. Son is radiance of God’s glory, exact representation of Being; sustains all things.

Heb. 1:4 Superior to the angels.

Heb. 1:5 Has God said to angels, “you, son, I, Father?”

Heb. 1:6 Angels worship Him.

Heb. 1:7 Makes angels spirits; servants of fire

Heb. 1:8-9 Son - Throne last for ever; justice scepter of kingdom. Loved righteousness, hated wickedness; set you above companions

Heb. 1:10-12 Heavens work of hands; They will perish, You remain; You remain same - years will not end.

Heb. 1:13-14 Which angels did God say? “Sit at right hand; I make your enemies footstool?”

Heb. 2:1 Pay attention, don’t drift

Heb. 2:2-4 Message binding; every disobedience - punishment; How escape if ignore salvation? Salvation confirmed to us. God testified to it by signs, wonders, miracles, gifts of Holy Spirit.

LISTEN: Everyone will have a different list. There is NO one right way to do this. Don’t stress! Jot down repeated words or phrases that seem to characterize the whole passage. What words stand out to you - write them in your list.

Step 2: Divisions
This refines the content list and furthers our remembering of the passage. This step helps us “see” the main themes of the passage.

Activity 2:
Look at main blocks of thought in 1 John 1:5-2:2. Think paragraphs. Divide the passage into 2-4 main divisions. Write verses in each division and create a “complete” sentence summarizing the content of those paragraphs.

Divisions Example:
I. Heb. 1:1-3 ...God speaks through His Son Jesus today.

II. Heb. 1:4-14 ... Jesus Christ is superior to angels.

III. Heb. 2:1-4...The Gospel of Jesus Christ keeps a Christian from drifting.

LISTEN: Everyones divisions will be different! No one right way. Have fun! Think of it as a word sudoku puzzle :-)

Step 3: Subject Sentence
We do this to really get the passage into our minds and it is valuable in remembering the information

Activity 3: Subject Sentence
Summarize the content of all the divisions you made for 1 John 1:5 - 2:2. Don’t try to spiritualize the passage :-). The subject sentence has no more than 10 words!!! (This is tough I know - but forces you to think “big picture”) Sentence must have a subject and action/predicate ... In other words a complete sentence. Ask yourself what might make this passage of scripture different than other passages in the Bible. Try to include the info. of the divisions into your sentence.

Subject Sentence Example:
God speaks today through Jesus Who is superior than angels.

LISTEN:
Everyone’s subject sentence will be different!!! Get the picture? But it really helps you begin to see the “context” of the passage. Sure does eliminate the possibility of “proof-texting”!!:-)

***Now try it on your own. 1.)Content 2.)Divisions 3.)Subject Sentence****

**** Try to post by Saturday ... It will be fun to see what each of us comes up with. You Don’t need to post the content - but it will be FUN to see how each person does the divisions and subject sentence.****

I noticed this post was not on the "updated" list
of choices in the "Discussion" Section~ as of today,
August 16~

Is there a particular reason this was done?

MK--I think it scrolled off because it is more than 24 hours old. Our posts here will keep the thread on the "last day" list for another 24 hours from the last post...

I've been away most of the day; I'm sorry that I haven't contributed more today!

DIVISIONS
I. If we walk in the light of God we have fellowship, but if we walk in darkness while claiming fellowship the truth is not in us. (1 John 1:5-7)

II. If we say we have no sin the truth is not in us. (1 John 1:8)

III. If we sin He forgives, but if we say we haven't sinned His word is not in us. (1 John 1:9-10)

IV. Don't sin, but if you do Jesus is the propitiation for sin. (1 John 2:1-2)

Subject Sentence
God forgives sin; when we claim no sin truth not in us.

Try to keep the subject sentence to 10-12 words. It's hard, but worth the effort.

Part One

1 John 1:5:---We have heard & declared the message: God is light, not even a part of Him is dark.

1 John 1:6&7---If we walk in the dark while we say we fellowship with him--it can't be true. (Can light & dark mix?) As we walk in the light with Him, we have the gift of fellowship with each other and are purified from sin by His blood.

1 John 1:8&9---If we claim sinlessness, we are self-deceived--truth not in us.If we are honest & confess our sins, a just & faithful God forgives them & purifies us.

1 John:1:10---We make God out to be a liar if we make the claim that we have not sinned. His word doesn't fit into our lives.

1 John 2:1&2---I'm telling you these things so you won't sin, but if any of us do, we already have our defender Jesus Christ. He can do this for us because He is the atoning Sacrifice for everyone's sins--ours & the whole world.

Wow, Nowisee!!

I really liked your sentence and what a wonderful promise by the Savior ..."When we wander from Light, our Savior has made provision." I liked your use of the word Light!!! In Bible Study Fellowship we sometimes use the sentences we create in homelitics as "Truth statements." In other words we answer the question ... What Biblical truth is being taught in this passage. Your sentence reminds me of what I would call a Biblical truth ... When we wander from Light, our Savior has made provision.

Thanks Nowisee!!! And by the way ... thank you for the sweet card!! Brought tears to my eyes.
