My son and his wife went through the entire many months of classes to join the SDA denomination. They went to the very last class And were to get baptized as official SDA's the next Saturday. Then after all that effort the skank SDA minister told them he wouldn't baptize them if his wife continued wearing jewlery, make-up and oh by The way, then he told them they had to give up pork too. They were totally unhappy wondering why the pastor took around six months of their time with weekly sessions before telling them the rules. They told the low - life SDA minister to forget it, they won't be back. By the way, this recently happened.

He went through the 6 months of "study" so that they would be so convicted that they needed to "follow Jesus all the way" and "surrender all" ...that when the pastor brought up jewelry, makeup and pork, they would be willing to do it....as a sign of their loyalty. Now it puts them in the position that they're not *willing* to do this for God...for the TRUTH... etc.

Bait and switch!

Glad your son and his wife didn't fall for it. Have you talked to them about Adventism? I wondering why they were willing to study for 6 months with this pastor.

Praise God that they were spared!

I am pretty baffled that not eating pork hadn't come up already--after all, it's the right arm of their gospel.

And it must be a really conservative church. Even the churches that condemn jewelry are usually okay with makeup.

I hope they will find a good christian church to go to and who knows maybe God had a reason for them to go through this and that they can use it to help others from being sucked into sda teachings.

Yes, even i was surprised at the sequence of events. And, Cloudwatcher, following Jesus is just what they told the minister they wanted to do, while in that conversation they told him jesus doesn't care about make-up and jewelry but He cares about their hearts and their forgiveness. They got involved with this minister because my mother went to that church For nearly 20 years before her death. They weirdest party of the story is even though he tows the line regarding make-up and jewlery and pork he is nothing vegetarian. I know because I've been today neighborhood barbeques where he also showed up to.

I was in 6th grade when my parents got baptized into the adventist church.

Dad stopped at a filling station, on the way to church that day, and had a mechanic cut his wedding ring off so he could be baptized. They would not baptize him while he was wearing a wedding ring.

Of course, that was in 1970 or so....

Surfy~

My Mother, sold her wedding rings(diamonds and all)
to a pawn shop, so she could be "re-baptized",
in the adventist church~

My Father, was not an adventist, at this time~
Getting rid of the rings he gave her with all his love,
in this manner and for that reason, really hurt his feelings. :-(

Yes, it seems like each pastor makes his own rules for his church members. And, each person then makes up his or her rules that are in addition to the pastors rules. Never mind following God's rules, the SDA's one upped them. Back to my son and his wife, i guess after six months Of studies and his grandmother being so dedicated to the SDA denomination the minister probably figured they wouldn't back out. Well, they did. They just thought it was crummy for the minister to spend six months telling them about forgiveness, repentence, grace and so on and then several days before they were to get baptized he springs his rules on them. They never went back.

I watched my mom, when I was younger, take off her wedding ring & place it in the offering plate. The impassioned sermon that Sabbath was on the evils of wedding rings & the ring-wearing members of the congregation were asked to give them up to the church---this was what God wanted of them.

I think your experience trumps this, though, Surfy!

So, when beautiful Jewlery goes into the offering plate does it go into the pastors wifes Jewlery box at home for when they are on vacation where no one knows they area SDA? Or, do they sell it and donate the money to the general conference?

My mother is 100% anti-jewelry. She says that the Israelites had to remove it all before they could enter the "Promised Land". God told them to remove it all.
She just doesn't read the Bible for herself, only what the SDA study guides tell her to study. Of course that isn't in the study guides.

Actually Ellen White said to donate the Jewlery to the denomination so the money could be used to teach the unsaved the truth of The end times. I think in one of the Early Writings, not sure but that was her story And they're sticking with it

Punababe808, indeed she did. Sell it at a huge loss, even.

"Those who have bracelets, and wear gold and ornaments, had better take these idols from their persons and sell them, even if it should be for much less than they gave for them, and thus practice self-denial. Time is too short to adorn the body with gold or silver or costly apparel. I know a good work can be done in this line. Jesus, the Commander in the heavenly courts, laid aside His crown of royalty and His royal robe and stepped down from His royal throne, and clothed His divinity with the habiliments of humanity, and for our sakes became poor, that we through His poverty might come into possession of eternal riches, and yet the very ones for whom Christ has done everything that was possible to do to save the perishing souls from eternal ruin feel so little disposition to deny themselves anything they have money to buy.

The Lord is soon to come, and His reward is with Him and His work before Him to give every man according to his work. I try to set before the people that we are handling the Lord’s money to accomplish the most important work that can be done. They can, individually, through denial of self, do much more, if all do a little, and the many little rivulets will make quite a current sent flowing heavenward.

True, it is difficult for all to take in the situation. Self, self, self, must be served and glorified, and how hard it is for all to become laborers together with God. Oh, that a spirit of self-sacrifice might come to every church, and thus every soul nigh and afar off might learn the value of money, and use it while they can, and say, “Of Thine own Lord, we give Thee”. Ellen G. White, Letter 110, 1896, pp. 2, 3. (October 29, 1896.)

Too bad she didn't sacrifice her hairnets for the "cause".

I'm surprised that the pastor didn't know how he was supposed to lead them bit by bit into giving up pork and jewelry. I mean, isn't he *supposed* to give them a bunch of *proof texts* twisted out of context to lead them to believe that they're supposed to give up those things? You know - first convince them that the commandments that the New Testament is talking about are the Old Testament [Old Covenant] ones. And then convince them that Ellen White is the "spirit of prophecy" spoken of in Revelation, while ignoring what the REAL spirit of prophecy is - all the prophets that have foretold Jesus, such as mentioned in these verses:
"And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He [Jesus] interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself." Luke 24:27
(Also see Acts 3:24)

I guess that pastor must have missed the class: "Trapping New Converts."

Asurprise, this pastor spent five months telling my son and his wife about grace, forgiveness and Gods mercy. Then the last session they had with him before the Saturday they were to be baptized he sprung the rules on them. To use polite words, my son and his wife were a tad but purturbed. They got up to leave and told the pastor they realized that wasn't the church for them. The minister tried telling them to reconsider and they told him they just plain and simply didn't see what a few necklaces and rings And some lipstick And eye shadow had to do with being a Christian. Then after they got home and were obsessing about it they got really super perterbed and called the minister and asked him if he was going to kick out all the current members who wear jewlery and make up. As the minister was explaining that wasn't and option my son said, "I don't have time to listen to you're crap. I hot things to do." And,he hung up. The minister never called back.
