Colleen, I agree with you in that I was not able to bring myself to vote for Romney due to knowing about what Mormons believe and their political prophecies. It is alleged that Romney has taken part in the Mormon temple ceremony where he would have taken a blood oath to serve/obey the Mormon church above all else. The Mormon church believes that prophecy is ongoing and that some of their current-day leaders speak with prophetic authority. He would have been obliged to do what they say if he is true to his Mormon beliefs, which he has stated that he is. I think he downplayed his Mormonism in a big way, but he didn't deny it.
I couldn't vote for Obama either. I picked Virgil Goode because his values most closely matched mine, even though I knew I was in a sense "throwing my vote away." I couldn't vote in a way that violated my conscience however. I trusted that whomever ended up in office would be allowed to be there by God and that we should also pray for our leaders (I need to start doing that).

When i started this discussion it was not my intention that we all get to duking it out with political bashing of each other. I wanted the discussion to address how The SDA church And SDA individuals reconcile The conflict of their spiritual beliefs of public office And the military with having one of their own run. And, i refuse on this site to indicate myself political leaning.

I don't see anyone bashing each other. Discussion of political leaders, yes. We say much harsher things against EGW and don't blink an eye. If we have a leader in office who allows the degradation of our society then yep, I'm going to speak out.
I think politics has become more and more intertwined in every aspect of our lives because government wants to control everything we do. I see the pro-choice being taught in our schools as well as the alternative of familes being taught such as the gay family. There was a teacher just the other that got removed from his classroom for not allowing pro-choice in and speaking out against it. Our kids are being taught a lot of political junk.
Our country was founded on religiosity freedom to worship as we please. The churches in England dictated to the people their religion and their government. It looks as though we are being dictated to about what morals we should have and if our rights are going to be upheld.
As far as an SDA as a president, it would all depend on the person. We can talk about a church but you have to be real careful when you start talking about a man such as Dr. Ben Carson and saying you know what he believes in just because he affliates with a certain church. I know that no one has done that here, but the problem is when you vote on a president, you vote on a man, not the church behind him.
Personally, I don't know Dr. Ben Carson or what he stands for so when and if that time would come, I'd get know what he stands for before I make a judgment call based only on his religious affiliation.

As a former SDA do I do NOT want to see the mainstream media shine a spotlight on Adventism. In fact, I think having a SDA run for president would end up being detrimental to the FAF ministry. Why? Because I learned from Mitt Romney's run that a secular media is much more interested in demonizing anyone who presumes to judge a belief than they are in evaluating the belief. From their standpoint, there isn't any such thing as "truth"; there is only "what works for you". As long as you don't judge what works for someone else, then all is okay. If you cross this line you will be destroyed in the press. This effect was so strong in the last presidential election that we saw prominent evangelicals back peddling on Mormonism, reversing themselves, and apologizing for previous statements they had made about Mormonism. In this last election, the mainstream media cemented the view that Mormonism is just another Christian denomination into the national psyche. If Ben Carson runs, expect the same as it pertains to Adventism.

The only problem with your logic or your line of thinking is you assume there will always be a country with religious freedom to keep exposing SDA. When we put or allow to be put into office men of no moral character and those who keep stripping away our rights, we will have a bigger problem than exposing one tiny cult.
Seriously think for a moment if you had to choose between a SDA as president and a secular man with absolutely no moral character that will allow even more degrading of our society, which would you choose? Or between a SDA and a Muslim?
It's not as cut and dry as you make it out to be. There are a lot of scenarios.
I think the country's welfare is on a much larger, more important scale than exposing the tiny cults. If you look at the rising population of Muslims, you see we have much greater threats from that religion than we ever do from SDA or Mormons. Look at England. Many places allow Sharia Law. This country at the rate that it is going will be overrun with Muslims who will not allow you to be a Christian. Christians are being persecuted all the time by Muslims.

The 'bigger picture' has only secondary focus on the 'tiny' cult we came out of. What we are really about is preaching the pure simply gospel message of Jesus Christ. The need of all people centers on their need for regeneration and freedom from death because of their sins. Our true enemy is the Devil and very little to do with the ‘tiny cult’ we are exposing.
Any time we get trapped into thinking we need to choose and vote for the lesser of two evils we have forgotten who this enemy is. One example we can learn from the Old Testament prophets is that God is against all evil no matter what form it takes.
When we put away our ‘idols’ let us not take up another form of the very same evil. Aways focus on what and who we are for.

To be clear, I'm not attempting to make any inference whatsoever about voting. I'm simply saying that I think if Adventism ever gets really prominent exposure in the media it won't expose Adventism for what it is. It will only cause critiques do Adventism to be labeled as "hate speech". Again, I am not suggesting in anyway that you should or should not vote for a particular SDA candidate. I'm simply making a prediction about how perceptions will change, probably in a way we might not at first expect.

One thing that I would see hampering a SDA as a candidate is if they view Israel the same way as the SDA church. Since they think they are spititual Israel they might not care what happens to physical Israel which wouldn't be good. As it says in the Bible that God blesses those that do good for Israel.
There are certainly a lot of variables that come into play when voting.
I'm not sure I understand why we wouldn't vote for the lesser of the 2 evils. Didn't Jesus say to render to Ceaser what is Ceaser's? Surely that money may have being going to evil activities. We also pay taxes too that can't always be going to a worthwhile project. We do live in this world. Isn't it better to try and do what we can to make it better?

Dr. Carson has been on TV speaking an awful lot... guess he doesn't have any surgeries scheduled...
