Colleen,
You do not get older, you just get better like a good wine. My son has told me I look 21 and act 21. I will not say how many years ago that was. My son has said I took anatomy at LLU when Leonardo Di Vinci was state of the art anatomy!!! So that makes me older/better than you:-)

Heretic, when did you attend La Sierra Academy? I worked there for a few years. I wonder if I know you. I still live in Riverside.

Heretic, I am the Lutheran on this board. However, that is where I hold my earthly denominational membership. I hold my formost membership on the book of life. Until I read your post I had no idea that the Lutheran kids and the SDA kids had sports meets together. Want to hear something that happened at a Lutheran social last summer? I think it was in Minnesota. The church advertised a function and put in the announcement that there would be enuf ham for everyone. PETA came to the function dressed like pigs to protest. We all at church thought it was just so funny. I remember thinking that PETA doesn't get to protest at SDA functions. The PETA pig confronted the Lutheran pastor asking him how he justified eating those pigs. The pastor quoted the text about being able to eat whatever you can get from the meatmarket and told the PETA pig that God had more authority than PETA of what he ate and then the Lutherans got busy having a good time and well, I don't know if PETA left or continued with the protest but that was the extent of the comments they got from a Lutheran. It just strikes me as so funny.

Hello to Heretic! And welcome!

Yes, Goldenbear and Susan_2, I well remember how sports was a terrible thing to us Adventists. At Weimar, keeping score was very, very frowned upon. But sometimes it was ok, such as when we played 9-sqaure, or pick-up basketball. Funny how our ìfaithî convoluted or ìstretchedî to fit certain circumstances. One time some of us wanted to go bowling, and the faculty nixed it. Why, I donít know. How long has bowling been removed from the betting?!?

Susan_2, you mentioned MBA. When I went there for the last half of my senior year in ë88, we had all sorts of leagues where we kept score, and GASP!, a record of the whole season, with playoffs and everything! We even had an Alumni vs. Student Body game! Funny how things change. But no, we never played other schools.

Kind of reminds me of what we kids used to say, jokingly, how we could have ìvega-pork fried in vega-lardî. As long as it was a substitute for sin, and not a sin itself, it was ok. Kind of like playing Rook instead of using a ìrealî deck of cards.

Whatís the difference? If you act like youíre drunk, does it really matter that you didnít drink any alcohol? If were going to do something, why not really do it, and avoid the hypocrisy?

Iíve met a young pastor who is one bundle of energy. He was hired as the Recreation Pastor by a huge Baptist church. He set up an entire community sports program built around Christian principles. I donít remember the exact name of the program they follow, but itís designed to teach proper sportsmanship and positive Christian values.

The awesome thing about the program he set up was itís had a huge impact on the surrounding community. He has had the opportunity to bring many kids to salvation. The program has a strong influence upon the parents. They aggressively teach a parent how to be the right type of support to their child. Heís brought many parents to Christ also, often praying with them right on the field.

Another impact of the program is all this community outreach supports itself financially as parents pay for their child to belong to the league. I realize most churches donít have the necessary room to set up ballfields, but I wonder why more donít do something similar to teach how to get along in a competitive world.

Praise God...

Just to chime in...

I, too, am an avid sports "buff." I have been a GB Packer fanatic since the late 1960s. It got so bad that in 1998, my wife and I named our first "kid" Brett (after Mr. Favre!?!) regardless of what the sex was going to be. Middle name almost Lambeau, but we both chickened out and gave him my wife's maiden name of "Rine."

Then, in 2001, during her 8th month of pregnancy, my wife really "wigged-out" (thank goodness) and had the idea of naming our second boy Green! I was delving into Scripture for "inspirational ideas" like Micah or Noah. Then, to really prove my/our sports addiction, his middle name became Bay. That's right, my 3 1/2 year-old son is named Green Bay and my first born is named Brett.

You all can only guess what two colors make up the majority of our home.

What an interesting thread this was/ has become. Please don't "condemn me" for being a bit "out there" when it comes to sports, mainly American Football.

Praise The Lord :-)

Praise God, could it be "upwards"? I know that is a basketball and cheerleading program initiated by the S. Baptists. It is very God-centered, they pray before each game, have devotionals at practice, and in the younger teams, don't even keep score ...just teaching fundamentals of the game, etc. I've been very impressed with the program since it is not so oriented on "winning". Every one gets a "star" at the end of the game to iron on to their shirt for best defense, or offense, most Christ like attitude, etc. Very encouraging for the boys (or girls) to hear something encouraging about their play.

Eric, my music minister is a big cheesehead. I'm personally fond of the Chiefs, but we don't win very often when it really counts. I used to like baseball, but got pretty turned off during the strike. Haven't really tuned in much since then...and it would seem like "heresy" to pray for the cardinals, rather than the Royals who really "need" it to win at all... :0 (humor, really!)

I went to a rural public high school (except for 11th grade when I went to MBA). This high school takes up many, many square miles in area and at the time had around 400 kids in grades 9-12 (it has even less kids now because people are moving from the farms to the cities). Anyway, half of those 400 would be girls so that only left 200 boys. Then divide those 200 boys by 4 and you get about 50 boys in each grade. Eliminate the ones that didn't want to get involved in sports, the ones who weren't physicsally up to being involved in sports and, well, you don't get many kids to pick from to make up a team. So, my senior year the local Lions Club told the boys on the football team if they could win just one game the Lions Club would completely throw a huge party complete with barbeque and a disc jocky for the entire school on a Saturday night. We did not get the party. I think my school lost every game it ever played. However, we did have several kids who could do a mean rodeo routine. And, frankly, I love going to the rodeo. That's where the action is at!

Eric, that is the greatest thing that I have ever heard. I wanted to name my child Daryl Kile for the late cardinal pitcher. But my wife wasn't liking the idea after my dad told her who he was.

Praise God--there's also the Fellowship of Christian Athletes--I don't know much about its curriculum, but I know they do have educational programs to help young athletes incorporate being Christ-followers into their athletic pursuits.

Melissa, you're right. The program they were using is www.upward.com and it describes itself as an "evangelistic sports ministry."

FCA is great too. In my area at least, they are in the schools from Middle School on and work with the students and the coaches.

Praise God...

helovesme,

It is a blessing, the baby is great. we are going on 41/2 months. We will find out what we are having in 2 weeks. I am so excited. God is good. Thank you for your prayers. I am searching for a St. Louis Cardinal jersey for infants since the baby will be born in the middle of baseball season.

Hrob,
There is a store at the Aladdin Casino and Hotel that has small, for children, uniforms from the various military. I think they have base ball and foot ball uniforms for babies also. I bought an Air Force uniform for my Grandson. It had pilot's sunglasses to go with it. It was adorable. I will check it out and if they do I will let you know right here. Then, if they do, we can ask Colleen to give us each others address and I can send it to you. I will look in the coming weeks.
