I was having lunch today with a good friend, and sharing a doctrinal dilemma with her. After laying the whole issue out to her, she ignored the question and asked me the following....

"What would you tell someone who asked you what God wanted from them ...?"

My answer was quick. It surprised me. So what is your first response?

Ill tell ya mine later...no peeking. :-)

I would respond like I responded to my son when he asked me why God gave him the interests of being in the military and the SDA church says go only if you are drafted. I told him to pray to God about it. He did and is now an Air Force officer.

Micah 6:8
8 He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
(NIV)

Deut 10:12
12 And now, O Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul,
(NIV)

It was, has been, is, will be the same thing...God wants our hearts

Matt 15:8-11
8 "'These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.
9 They worship me in vain; their teachings are but rules taught by men.'"
10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand.
11 What goes into a man's mouth does not make him 'unclean,' but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him
(NIV)

Okay, so heart may be a type of spiritual doubletalk, but I would say that God wants us. He wants us to see the world as He sees it. He wants, as Anne of Green Gables put it, "kindred spirits" .

My answer was:

To know Him.

I can imagine how I would have answered that question a year ago...

Diana, I just reread your prayer on the doubts that spread thread, and realized you prayed that I would know Him!. I see your prayer was answered, with that thought in the forefront of my mind!

I take my answer back now - and go with what you said, Javagirl! We all said the same thing in different ways, but how powerful the phrase "to know Him" is! Thanks.

Debbie, I cant imagine there would be a right or wrong answer, as it is such a personal question.

I just liked how my focus has changed, and thinking about the goal of "knowing Him, is powerful, and inspiring, and not the least bit overwhelming.

It would break my heart if I were one that came to Him and said, "look what I did in Your name, and He responded "I never knew you". (I dont remember the text reference for that)

Truly knowing someone, reminds me of the rock opera "Tommy", and the song lyrics.
See Me, Feel Me, Touch Me, Heal Me. What a universal desire God has given us to connect in deep "relationship" with Him and others.

It interesting and thought provoking seeing the different answers.

Isn't it interesting to put it all together with what "knowing" means biblically?

To be united in marriage, i.e. "intimacy"
We are the Bride of Christ and marriage is the symbol of this union! It is as close as can possibly be.

I think it is beautiful.
