In reading old SDA Review magazines and also in published books I see Uriah Smith teaching that prior to the second coming there will be a pre resurrection. There will be both righteous and wicked dead resurrected who will then roam the earth until the second coming. I've only run into Uriah but given its published by Review and Herald Publishing, and that its in the Review magazine, it clearly wasn't a fringe kook teaching among them.

I was raised in the SDA church, of a 5 generation family living at the time, nothing in our knowledge ever spoke of this.

Did anyone else ever hear of this ?

Growing up semi SDA i was exposed to so many farout looney teachings especially concerning all the various ressurrections and what happens to this people and what happened to those people that i never could keep it stright. I do know many SDA 's believe in several different resurrections depending on what sort of person they were. It all boils down to works. No grace involved.

I've never heard of it, but then it seems to me that "inconvenient" sayings from early church leaders are just "conveniently" not mentioned! ;-)

Lucias, Richard was absolutely taught that doctrine. I have very vague memories of having heard it, but Richard remembers it. I don't know where to find it exactly, but he says the way he remembers it was that there was a very specific "pre resurrection" that would involve those who pierced Him and those who died having lived under the Three Angels Messages (in other words, Adventists) and who successfully kept the law. Those two groups would be raised to see Jesus return before the first and second resurrections.

I do remember learning that those who pierced Him would be brought to life in order to see him return...

http://spectrummagazine.org/article/column/2013/01/17/resurrecting-forgotten-adventist-teaching

I first swerved into this with the above article. There is an EGW quote in GC but its mainly focused on right as the clouds are parting.

The stuff in the Review and such has the faithful running around with Ellen and maybe even Elijah and other patriarchs and such during the time of trouble.

Its truly fascinating.

Colleen, While on vacation with my Dad this last Christmas we had the discussion about the "special" resurrection concerning those who pierced Jesus side.

Specifically Revelation 1:7 and John 19:37.

"Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him. So it is to be. Amen." Rev 1:7 (NASB)

My father also recalled being taught that the soldiers who pierced Jesus would be specially resurrected so that they would see Him and know it was the Messiah they crucified. This based on Rev 1:7 so it seemed to confuse him on the order of events and the resurrections.

We scoured other Christian commentaries and sermons (e..g, MacArthur, J Vernon McGee, Swindoll) to see what they understood about that one verse. It was interesting that they were either silent or had only on line to say in passing. Ultimately what we gathered was this so give me y'alls thoughts.

Rev 1:7, John 19:37 and Zach. 12:10-14 all speak in plural (i.e., "they") that pierced his side. Compare that to John 19:34 that records one of the soldiers pierced His side". J. Vernon McGee suggests that "they" actually refer to Israel an not the soldier(s) who physically stabbed Him on the Cross.

Also Rev 1:7 makes no claim that "they" will be resurrected in a "special resurrection" moment when Jesus returns. It simply says

--"Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him. So it is to be. Amen."

As far as the Bible tells us everyone will see and recognize Jesus. This is either because we are all either be

(i) alive when He comes or
(ii) dead and resurrected at the appointed times (righteous or wicked)

So yes, "every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him" but it doesn't suggest a special resurrection that we in SDAism thought we discovered as a special SDA nugget of insight. Those who pierced him will be in one of those resurrections.

It seems that when we were taught in SDAism we:

--Majored in the minor items like "a special resurrection", "secret investigative judgement", or "Jewish Sabbath Truth" and we

--Minored in the major items like the Gospel, Truth about Salvation, and the fulfillment of the requirements of all law by Jesus Christ.

I was taught the "special resurrection" as an SDA. It is still taught today. They use Rev1:7 as well as Daniel 12 to support this belief.

I agree, Ben--it doesn't suggest a special resurrection. When I read the passages now, including the Zechariah one, I understand them to refer to Israel, not to the Roman soldiers personally. There's detail here that the Bible doesn't discuss. Ellen filled in all the blanks...and she ended up warping reality.

I was most definitely taught that those who nailed Jesus to the cross would be raised at the Second Coming to see His coming but would then be destroyed by the brightness of His coming along with the rest of the living wicked. I remember being taught that the pharisees were also a part of this crowd and I'm not sure why. So, these people would have two resurrections, one to see the Second Coming and then the resurrection of the wicked. What a mess.
