Hello all, it's been a many of seasons since I have been here. Hope all is well with everyone. I have taken a break from Christianity and religion in general. I started reading again and came across something I have never really noticed, well I have noticed it but it just never clicked until just now. As we all know the Sabbath was a sign given to Israel when God gave them the 10 commmandments (old covenant). And breaking the Sabbath was a sign of rejecting God's covenant, some use the analogy of the Sabbath being like wedding rings. Taking off the ring is akin to disrespecting the marriage. Anyway As Formers we all know that the Sabbath was a sign or shadow pointing to Jesus's completed works and that entering Jesus's rest is entering into God's rest and that Jesus is our Sabbath Rest. You may all already be aware of this text and already tied it into the Sabbath Rest in Christ and how it relates to Hebrews 4 as well. But just in case I thought I would share this with you all.

So, I was reading luke and came across this:

Luke 2:34-35 HCSB

Then Simeon blessed them and told His mother Mary: “Indeed, this child is destined to cause the fall and rise of many in Israel and to be a sign that will be opposed — and a sword will pierce your own soul — that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

Here is how it relates to Hebrews 4 and entering that rest.

Hebrews 4:7-13 HCSB

again, He specifies a certain day — today — speaking through David after such a long time, as previously stated: Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts. For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken later about another day. Therefore, a Sabbath rest remains for God’s people. For the person who has entered His rest has rested from his own works, just as God did from His. Let us then make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will fall into the same pattern of disobedience. For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the ideas and thoughts of the heart. No creature is hidden from Him, but all things are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him to whom we must give an account.

I find it amazing how it suggests that keeping the 4th commandment does not equal entering God's rest and just as rejecting the 4th commandment was breaking the sign of the old covenant, Today, rejecting Jesus's completed works, you will not enter God's rest. Those who believe one must work to enter rest by keeping the 4th commandment do so by rejecting Jesus's completed works, they are breaking the sign of the new covenant.

Just a thought,
Paul

Great to see you, Paul!

That is so true and such a beautiful and freeing thought. Jesus' completed works and sacrifice on the cross are our true Sabbath rest. Any dependence on a day or a law is rejection of that rest. We were just going over this same thing in my Bible Study Fellowship class (we're studying the book of Matthew).

Hope you're well and I'm glad to see you studying. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, I'm glad to see you too, Paul! :-)

That's an excellent point that you made and these verses add to it:
"Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath. These are a shadow of the things to come, but the substance belongs to Christ." Colossians 2:16-17
Jesus is definitely the Substance of all three kinds of Sabbath shadows. Weekly, monthly and annual/seasonal!

And here's another verse:
"Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28

Paul, it's really good to see you again! Thank you for that insightful post. Very good point!

Jesus is enough. It still overwhelms me.
