I'm currently taking an early Church history class at The Master's Seminary and finding it extremely encouraging in a number of way - primarily in the way that we see a great degree of continuity between the Church fathers and the Reformation. I think that we Adventists were often taught the view that after Constantine (and even before), the church was utterly corrupted and immediately became Catholic in doctrine (on this issue, as with the sabbath, Roman Catholics agree with SDAs!).

But as I am exposed to quote after quote about salvation by grace alone through faith alone, I can see that the post-apostolic faith is largely the same as ours (even as seeds of serious later errors crept in). In light of that, here is a very beautiful exposition of Colossians 2:13-15 by Chrysostom (349 – 407 A.D.) that really spoke to me (coming from an SDA background):

“Having forgiven us all sins, having wiped out by the doctrines the handwriting which was against us, which was contrary to us, He took it out of the way, having nailed it to His cross. Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, having triumphed over them in it.

Do you see how greatly in earnest Christ was to do away with the handwriting? We were all held captive by sin and punishment. He Himself, by suffering punishment, did away with both the sin and the punishment, for Christ was punished on the cross. To the cross, then, He fixed the handwriting, and afterwards tore it to pieces by His power. What handwriting was this? He means either what the Jews said to Moses, “All that God has said, we will do and be obedient” (Exodus 24:3); or this, that we owe God obedience; or rather this, that the devil held possession of the handwriting which God set down against Adam – “In the day you eat from the tree of knowledge, you will die” (Genesis 2:17). This handwriting, then, which the devil held in his possession, Christ did not hand to us, but Himself tore it to pieces, as One who joyfully forgives."

Lettlander,

Chrysostom was the Bishop of Constantinople, which was the capital of the Roman Empire and the center of the Christian world. All of the first seven Ecumenical Councils were held within a 200-mile radius of Constantinople. At NONE of those Councils was the Pope even present. At NONE of them did the Pope play a significant role (Rome is over 900 miles from Constantinople: Imagine the logistics of having the Pope go that far for an extended period of time). At NONE of the 7 Ecumenical Councils was the Sabbath, the Ten Commandments, OR Sunday ever mentioned directly. You can double-check this statement on any of the searchable online databases involving those Councils. Do keyword searches on "Sabbath" and "Sunday" and "Ten Commandments." I am confident you will strike out just like I did. Those things were literally never discussed directly. No Canons were decided on any of those issues.

Adventists focus on the regional Synod of Laodicea, whose Canons were never accepted by the Christian church as a whole. Adventists fixate on Canon #29, but the Canons were listed in descending order of importance. Whether the Deacon must stand or sit during the Liturgy was a more important Canon than #29, which dealt with the Sabbath. It was a minor issue because the issue had already been decided at the Council of Jerusalem in AD 52. Christians were not bound by the Mosaic Law (including the Sabbath).

Ellen baldly lied about the effect of the Pope on the early church. She lied about the Sabbath being "pressed lower" and Sunday being "elevated" at the "vast, worldwide councils." The Sabbath issue was resolved once and forever at the Council of Jerusalem in AD 52 (Acts 15). She lied about Papal Supremacy, which never has been accepted by Eastern Christianity (Ellen conveniently never mentioned Eastern Christianity in The Great Controversy. She never mentioned that Constantinople was the Capital of the Roman Empire and the center of worldwide Christianity). Chrysostom's writings had FAR more effect on the entire worldwide Christian church than anything out of Rome. As the Bishop of Constantinople, he was FAR more powerful than the Bishop of Rome in many important respects. He wrote the Divine Liturgy which is still in use today by all orthodox churches.

~Kaspars & Resjudicata~

I have been out of Adventism for over 20 years~

Even so, I love coming to the Forum for reading of the posts !

So many like yours are such an Encouragement :-)

Even though, I have been a 'Christian' SAVED by GRACE, in CHRIST Alone,

Those corrupted "tapes" that are still in the depths of my consciousness
from my years as an Adventist,
(from the womb to age 50) once in a great while come to the surface~ I hate when that happens! :-(

Prayer and study of what GOD really says, sends them away~

I find it so sad that the rambling(LIES) of a
mad woman have so
negatively impacted many many people.

GOD has a Plan~ I pray that those mired in the 'pit of these LIES'
will be pulled out into the "SONshine"!

You guys might be interested in this newest tidbit of information on Christian versus Adventist history.....This is going to be tedious, but I urge you to bear with me. This is explosive. Adventism is quite possibly the only sizable organization in history that is based completely on nothing BUT lies.

We are laboriously-translating Dr. Samuele Bachiochi's doctoral dissertation, at the Pontifical Gregorian in Rome. Our translator is translating the entire gigantic paper (500 pages)along with his oral dissertation defense (another 500 pages) from Italian into English. I will be condensing our findings and writing a new chapter about this for version 11.0, "Lying for God."

Bacchiochi caused quite a storm in 1977, with his book "From Sabbath to Sunday" that was widely distributed to Adventists. Bacchiochi rejected Ellen White's theory that Emperor Constantine had "changed the Sabbath to Sunday" in 325 AD. His book put the unanimous Christian-rejection of the Sabbath at 135 AD, when the Sabbath was outlawed throughout the Roman Empire by Emperor Hadrian. Hadrian's Decree was in the aftermath of the 135 AD Bar Khoba revolt, the 3rd Jewish Revolt, that had led to the Roman reduction of Palestine; and the expulsion of the Jews from Jerusalem, where they were impressed into slavery throughout the Roman Empire. In essence, Bacchiochi (a theology professor at Andrews University) called Ellen White a liar, since she claimed she was "shown" that Constantine was the villain behind Christianity's Sabbath abandonment. Additionally, he placed universal Sabbath abandonment about 200 years earlier than Adventist pioneers had. Bacchiochi theorized that Christians cowardly-"apostatized" on the Sabbath, not wanting to share the fate of the Jews. Nevertheless, 135 AD would have been within 35 years of the death of St. John the Revelator. The book rocked and shocked Adventism, and inadvertently-led to the surprising formation of the modern-day anti-Sabbatarian movement, and was instrumental in the World Wide Church of God abandoning Sabbath Keeping in 1993, and joining the ranks of Evangelical Christianity.

Amazingly, Bacchiochi was never fired for openly-challenging Ellen White's credibility as a "prophet" and one of her most important "visions."
This was the first "shot over the bow" against Adventism's "prophet," since within 10 years she would be publicly-disgraced as a habitual literary thief by Adventist preacher Walter Rea; and the Investigative Judgment heresy would be given a fatal blow by Dr. Desmond Ford.

All three Adventist "flagship" doctrines - EGW, the IJ and the Sabbath - received mortal blows in quick succession.

Are you still with me? I suggest you join me with some Def Leppard on the old headphones. Now it gets intense. Please try to follow this closely.

Bacchiochi made a devastating and shocking concession about an hour into his oral doctoral defense, and has caused us to translate his entire dissertation. During his oral defense, Bacchiochi conceded that Christianity had unanimously-rejected Sabbath-Keeping in the aftermath of the AD 52 Council of Jerusalem, which is detailed in Acts 15. This is deeply-disturbing, since this places universal Sabbath-abandonment some 80 years earlier than was suggested in the Book that was distributed to gullible and unsuspecting Adventists. Additionally, it demonstrates that it was the decree of the original Apostles that caused Sabbath abandonment; not some kind of Papal conspiracy theory dreamed up by Ellen White; nor some sort of cowardly mass "apostasy" by Christians as a result of the Bar Khoba Revolt. As a result of this shocking discovery, we have also found out that Bacchiochi had in his dissertation conceded the same AD 52 date, but had argued that Christians had abandoned the Sabbath out of anti-Antisemitism! He accused Jesus's original 12 Apostles of unvarnished anti-antisemitism! No wonder he abandoned that ridiculous theory in the middle of his oral defense!

Catch your breath yet? It just gets worse. Your entire life in Adventism was nothing more than involvement in one of history's most colossal frauds.

Can you believe that "From Sabbath to Sunday" never says that the AD 52 Council of Jerusalem was the reason that Christians universally-abandoned Sabbath Keeping; like Bacchiochi's oral defense and dissertation did? The book claims to be based on his dissertation at the Pontifical Gregorian. We found out it isn't. Sabbath-abandonment was entirely Biblicaly-based all along. And Adventism has tacitly-conceded as much by distributing a book that is nothing short of a deliberate fraud.

In "Lying for God" Version 10.3, I wrote three brand-new chapters that spelled out the following arguments:

Modern Social Science has demonstrated that the overwhelming majority of 1rst Century Jewish Christian converts were Hellenized Jews. They sampled First Century funerary records and crunched the statistics with Multivariate Regression analysis to determine that 95 percent of Jewish Christian converts in Rome, Alexandria and Greece; and 80 percent of Jewish Christian converts in Palestine were Hellenized Jews. This is a shocking finding because Hellenized Jews had abandoned Sabbath-Keeping, circumcision, and the Jewish food laws more than 100 years before the Birth of Christ, retaining only Passover and Temple rites. During the reign of Alexander the Great and Antioch Epiphanes, Jews had widely-abandoned almost all Jewish customs to fit in with the Greeks, who deplored those Jewish customs. Some Jewish men even went so far as to undergo the painful reversal of circumcision known as epispasm, since the Greeks exercised stark naked and conducted much of their business transactions in the gymnasiums. The detailed story of the Hellenized Jewish adoption of Greek ways is spelled out in The Books of Maccabees.

It also spells out the vicious-hatred of the Greeks for the Sabbath, Circumcision, and the anti-Pork laws of Judaism. Had not the Apostles wisely-jettisoned these things at the AD 52 Council of Jerusalem, Christianity would have quickly-fizzled into an obscure Jewish sect localized around Jerusalem. Christianity spread like wildfire throughout ancient Greece, annihilating the Greek pagan temple system very quickly.

Another lie of Ellen's: She insisted that Christians worshiped on Sunday as a result of being corrupted and compromised by pagan Sun Worship. Sun Worship received a mortal blow in 226 BC, when the last remaining symbol (the Colossus of Rhodes) of Greek Sun Worship collapsed during an earthquake, never to be rebuilt. It was on its last legs long before that, as Greek astronomers beginning in 500 BC realized that the Sun was our Solar System's "star," and could be quantified and studied and measured. They quickly realized that the earth revolved around the Sun. The Sun wasn't a "god" that rode on chariots across the sky, but an very ordinary star.

We were shocked because we found out that Bacchiochi's doctoral dissertation conceded that the Greeks - the vast majority of Gentile Christian converts in the First Century - had completely-abandoned Sun Worship no later than 200 years before the Birth of Christ. In the book that was distributed to Adventists, Bacchiochi made no mention of this historical tidbit, focusing instead on ROMAN sun worship. Like Ellen, Bacchiochi's book completely ignores the predominance of Greek Eastern Christianity, in order to prove their theories of Papal Superiority and Supremacy.

The Greek Orthodox Church has long-insisted that Sunday Worship commenced on Resurrection morning, and was given additional credibility by the fact that the Day of Pentecost also occurred on the First Day of the Week. I wrote a new chapter in Lying For God Version 10.0, demonstrating that Gentiles were forbidden by unanimous rulings of the Jewish Courts (CF: Matthew 23:1-3; Deuteronomy 17) from practicing Sabbath Keeping, on pain of the death penalty. Hellenized Jews had abandoned Sabbath Keeping long before the Birth of Christ. Adoption of Sunday as the Christian day of worship was simply a no-brainer for 1rst Century Christians. Neither the Hellenized Jews nor Gentiles had ever met together on the Sabbath anyway.

Catch your breath yet? I'm listening to "Rock of Ages." What are you listening to? I will continue.....

Another vein of obscure historical Christianity that I analyzed briefly in Version 10.0 "Lying for God" is the fascinating history of the Armenian Apostolic church and the Assyrian Church of the East. Both of these churches were founded in AD 33, just two years after the Resurrection, by the Apostles Bartholomew and Thaddeus. Both of these Apostles were brutally-martyred for their faith. Neither of these Apostles wrote a Gospel or an Epistle. They were simply missionaries, completely-outside of the borders of the Roman Empire. They left Jerusalem in AD 33 and never returned. At that time, the Assyrian Empire covered a land mass roughly 4x the size of the Roman Empire; stretching from modern-day Iraq to Korea. 1rst Century Christian artifacts have been unearthed by archaeologists in China. The Armenian Apostolic Church was based in the ancient Persian Empire.

Both of these ancient Apostolic Churches insist that they have worshiped on Sunday since their foundings in AD 33 (two years after the Resurrection). Bacchiochi in his oral dissertation defense CONCEDED that those assertions could not be rebutted; and argued they supported his embarrassing last-minute concession that universal Sabbath-abandonment had occurred no later than the AD 52 Council of Jerusalem (Acts 15). You better believe that I am gloating over this confirmation of my theory, advanced for the first time in Version 10.0 "Lying for God."

The assertions of these two Apostolic Churches are overwhelmingly-buttressed by extrinsic indicia of history:

a). Both of them were founded outside of the Roman Empire. Constantine's 325 AD decree COULDN'T have caused them to worship on Sunday, since Roman Law had no writ outside of the borders of the Empire. To have obeyed Roman Law inside of the Assyrian or Persian Empires would have been viewed as an act of treason, since both Empires were continuously in a state of war with Rome.

b). Neither of these Apostolic Churches sent representatives to the 7 Ecumenical Councils held near Constantinople, nor did they adopt the Canons generated by those Councils. In fact, the Assyrian Church became a hotbed of the Nestorian heresy, which eventually oozed its way into infecting some of the churches in the Roman Empire. In my opinion, this does not diminish the Church's claim of having worshiped on Sunday since its founding AD 33;

c). Neither of these Apostolic Churches have ever had formal communion or relations with the two "halves" of ancient Christianity (Rome and Constantinople) and have never been under the dominion of the Roman Pontiff. They simply couldn't have adopted Sunday worship as a result of Papal decrees, or the laws of the Roman Empire.

Finally, Bachiochi (apparently under pressure) conceded during his oral defense that the claims of the Greek church that Sunday worship commenced as a result of the earth-shattering events on Resurrection morning/Day of Pentecost were irrefutable. Needless to say, that is NOT what "From Sabbath to Sunday" claimed. The Book distributed to Adventists hews closely to the obsessive "Papal-centric" worldview of Adventism and Ellen White, and fixates on the Church of Rome and largely ignores the Eastern Half of Christianity.

Interesting, Res.

I'm looking at a copy of From Sabbath to Sunday on Scribd, and it says:

IMPRIMATUR
Romae, die 16 Iunii 1975
R. P. Herve Carrier, S. I
Con approvazione del Vicariato di Roma
in data 17 giugno 1975

Isn't that his dissertation?

So you're saying his whole structure collapsed during his oral defense?

Wow.

Thanks.

From the Preface:

The event of Christís resurrection which occurred on that
day, had naturally significant importance. Following the order of redemp-
tive history, the author begins his investigation with the Messianic typology
of the Sabbath in the Old Testament and proceeds to examine how this found
its fulfilment in the redemptive mission of Christ.

The strict scientific orientation of the work does not prevent the author
from revealing his profound religious and ecumenic concern.

Conscious that
the history of salvation knows not fractures but continuity, he finds in the
rediscovery of the religious values of the Biblical Sabbath, a help to restore
to the Lord’s Day its ancient sacred character. This is in reality the exhorta-
tion that already in the fourth century the bishops addressed to the believers,
namely to spend Sunday not in outings or watching shows, but rather to
sanctify it by assisting at the eucharistic celebration and by doing acts of
mercy (St. Ambrose, Exam. III, 1, 1).

Maggie,

Bacchiochi's academic work has been dogged by accusations of Academic Fraud from the outset:

http://www.thejournal.org/issues/issue120/retired-adventist-wants-apology-from-catholic-university-for-libel.html

And yes, we assess the entire structure of his argument fatally-collapsed during his oral defense. Bacchiochi's book claims that it is an "abridged" version of his dissertation. We are endevouring to find out what was "abridged" "out" of "From Sabbath to Sunday" and what was left "abridged" "in."

The person translating the Dissertation is an ex-girlfriend that I studied under while I was in Greece for six months, studying classical rhetoric on a Fullbright scholarship in 1990. She is fluent in 15 languages. She is an Oxford Phd, and has circulated the Italian version of Bacchiochi's dissertation among several of her European colleagues that I studied under, from The Sorbonne, Charles University in Prague, Oxford/Cambridge and Tübingen. We will be including their assessment of Bacchiochi's dissertation in Lying for God, Version 11.0.

We are analyzing and assessing the collapse of Bacchiochi's dissertation defense from a multi-disciplinary approach: historical, rhetorical, theological.

But to focus on why this arcane academic discussion is germane to Adventism: Bacchiochi was a missionary in Africa for the Adventist Church, when he was approached by a Catholic missionary and told about a new scholarship program (pursuant to Vatican 2)offered by Rome, wherein Protestant scholars could study in the prestigious Pontifical universities in Rome. (there are nine of them). That is how Bacchiochi ended up Rome, studying in Catholicism's most-prestigious university. But what is more disturbing and fascinating is THIS question: Why would the Adventists allow him to attend such a University, and then hire a graduate from such a school for their own theological seminary?

We assess that in the early 1970's, the General Conference was acutely aware that the "jig was about up" on keeping the lid on Ellen White's massive plagiarism. Time was running out on keeping the transcripts from the 1919 Bible conference hidden (they were ordered sealed for 50 years, since the attendees had established the fact that Ellen White was a colossal fraud). The GC knew that the Investigative Judgment/1844/Sanctuary was on the verge of collapse, after Dr. Raymond Cottrell's secret committee could find no biblicaly-plausible rationale for the doctrine.
http://www.rethinkingadventism.com/support-files/cottrell_1844.pdf

Without Ellen, the rickety Adventist Sabbath argument also falls to pieces.

We assess and theorize that Bacchiochio was specifically-commissioned and educated to conjure up a plausible-rationale for continued Sabbath Keeping that was not dependent on EGW. The Sabbath is the financial mainstay of Seventh Day Adventism.

Hi Cassie/Maggie;

I certainly hope that you will continue commenting as this thread progresses, since you will only make the argument better when this is congealed into a new chapter in Version 11.0 "Lying for God."

I want to throw another critical part of this analysis out, since I overlooked it about the time I switched from Def Leppard to Guns N' Roses on my headphones. You see, it broke my "stride" and "tempo."

The Septuagint (the Greek translation of the Old Testament) is a major part of the "glue" that "holds together" all of the preceding historical and theological analysis. As I wrote in "The Miracle at the Areogapus" in Lying for God Version 10.0, Paul's Mars Hill oration was the last nail in the coffin of Greek Patheism. The Septuagint was the first one.

As the Greek philosophical project progressed from Plato and Socrates to Aristotle; and culminated in Athenian democracy; the irrationality of the messy Greek Temple system became more and more obvious. In Alexandria, many Jews worked for the Alexandrian administrative apparatus, and this created a frisson and fusion of cultures. The Jews jettisoned Sabbath-Keeping, circumcision and the anti-pork customs of Judaism, as they evolved into Hellenized Jews. The Greek philosophical project evolved into Greek astronomy and medicine, beginning the demolition of their comical and absurd theological superstructure. They quickly realized that monotheism was rational. The translation of the Old Testament was commissioned forthwith, culminating in the controversial Septuagint.

It is controversial for many different reasons. For one, it buttressed the case for the Hellenized Jews' jettisoning of most of the Mosaic Law (except for Passover and Temple sacrifices). In Greek, the Old Testament was transformed from dusty and obscure Book of the Mosaic Law; into a vibrant typology of the incoming Messiah. Thus, the Hellenized Jews were "locked and loaded" for Resurrection Morning: Imagine being a Hellenized Jew that morning when the only Jewish customs you follow are the Passover and Temple sacrifices. How much more startling of a typology could you possibly find, being fulfilled right before your eyes? Particularly with the Last Supper? That's why almost all of the Hellenized Jews became Christians in the 1rst Century, and comprised the vast, overwhelming majority of Jewish Christian converts.

This is why I have long-argued that if you are a Sabbath Keeper, the real heroes of John 5 are the Pharisees, not Jesus. The Books of Maccabees spell out the civil war between the Hellenized Jews and observant Jews. Jesus emphatically took the side of the Hellenized Jews when he observed Hanukkah in John 10:22-23.

The Greek Gentiles and Hellenized Jews that were the vast, overwhelming majority of early Christian converts were bashed between the eyes with both the Resurrection and the Day of Pentecost both happening on the First Day of the week. It was simply a no-brainer.

If you study the canons of the first 7 Ecumenical Councils, you will find no mention of the Ten Commandments or the Sabbath, contrary to Ellen's assertions. Once again, the Septuagint provides the answer. You see, on the Sermon on the Mount, all of the societal and cultural trend-lines that I have previously discussed converged: Jesus painstakingly drew distinctions between the obsolete Mosaic Law and the new Laws of Christ. The typology of the Septuagint fused into the Beatitudes into one revolutionary tour de force. The Law of Christ was internal. It was the future. And so, the Sermon on the Mount was the "law" that Christians followed for the first 1500 years of Christianity, and is still the "law" that is recognized by Eastern Christianity. That's why the Ten Commandments are never mentioned in the first 7 Ecumenical Councils!

That unanimity began to change with St. Jerome's translation of the Bible ("The Vulgate") into Latin during the 300's. Jerome was convinced that the Hebrew texts (the "Masoretic") were more accurate. They had ulterior motives: read the Talmud closely. The translation of the Bible into the Septuagint is a day of mourning in Judaism, and directly blamed for the destructive of the 2nd Temple and the Roman reduction of Jerusalem and dispersion of the Jews throughout the Empire.

That's an interesting thought, Res.

How did SDA's arrange for him to be the first outside brother to receive this education, bad grades or no?

Quote from one of the conspiracy sites:

My dissertation FROM SABBATH TO SUNDAY was first published in 1977 by the Pontifical Gregorian University Press with the official Catholic imprimatur (approval). Since then it has been reprinted 13 times in English and has been translated in a dozen of languages. The French translation was done by two Belgian Benedictine monks as a labor of love and published by a Catholic press in Paris." [this info is quite similar to that which he included in the book itself (p.5) ~bh]

"Since Dr. Bacchiocchi seems intent on pushing his books based upon the fact that he has an imprimatur on one of them [From Sabbath to Sunday ~bh], it is important to know what the word imprimatur means. Simply stated, it means that there is nothing in the book that is contrary to the teaching of the [Catholic ~bh] Church." (Ed Faulk, Usenet Catholic Newsgroup message, December 15, 1997)

Merriam Webster's dictionary defines imprimatur as follows:

" im*pri*ma*tur (noun) [New Latin, let it be printed, from imprimere to print, from Latin, to imprint, impress -- more at IMPRESS] First appeared 1640

1 a : a license to print or publish esp. by Roman Catholic episcopal authority

b : approval of a publication under circumstances of official censorship

2 a : SANCTION, APPROVAL

b : IMPRINT

c : a mark of approval or distinction "

One must ask themselves, if this book truly proves and advocates Seventh Day Sabbath, why would it receive this Catholic imprimatur, and yet further, why would Sunday keeping monks translate his work "as a labor of love" if it disproved or went against what they stand for? Recall the hatred that the Catholic Church has had for the Seventh Day Sabbath throughout history.

Unintentionally, Jerome's Vulgate reconfigured the Old Testament back to a book that emphasized the LEGAL nature of the Mosaic covenant; as opposed to the Messianic typology of the Septuagint. That sparked the Latin (Roman Catholic) church's descent into "legalistic" scholasticism (as opposed to Eastern Christianity's predominant mysticism), planting the seeds for the eventual Great Schism in 1054 AD (which needless to say, neither Ellen nor Bacchiochi mention anywhere in their writings). The Patriarch of Constantinople was powerful enough that year to excommunicate the Pope of Rome! If that does not annihilate Ellen's theory on Papal Supremacy, I don't know what could!

St. Augustine of Hippo began the application of the Vulgate and budding scholasticism when he began the project (completed by St. Thomas Aquinas)of the division of the Mosaic Law into its "moral" and "ceremonial" components. The "Ten Commandments" were adopted post-Great Schism at the Roman Catholic-only 4th Lateran and the counter-Reformation Council of Trent as the "moral guide" for Christians.

Thus the heart of Adventism is founded in two post-Great Schism; Roman Catholic-only, counter-reformation church councils: That the Ten Commandments are the eternal and continuing Law for Christians. The Sabbath doctrine is ancillary to this, and could not have been possible without the Ten Commandments becoming the Moral Law for Christians. The very heart of Adventism was plagiarized directly from Roman Catholicism. On an Ecclesiastical-level, Adventism also adopted the Council of Trent's Papal/Papal Magisterium model of church governance: Ellen was the infallible Adventist "Poppess" and the General Conference ("God's Highest Authority on Earth") was the mirror image of the Magisterium.
