Death of my mother

My mother passed away on January 4th, 2017. I took care of her for the last 2 months of her life. This was such a rich spiritual experience, I hardly know where to start.

My mother was born Roman Catholic, and became an Adventist in her early 30s, my sister and I were children. I will give credit where credit is due. We were saved from a life of worldly emptiness, and joined an Adventist elementary school where we learned a lot (both truth and error). But one thing that stuck with me from those years of teaching is that the Bible is the reliable word of God. It is this principle that led me out of the errors of Adventism and into the light of the gospel.

We went from Adventism, to a more extreme form of historic Adventism; it was a long journey, but in 2010 the Lord revealed to first my mother, then to me, the truth of the gospel: justification by faith alone, by the completed work of Jesus alone. It was a very dramatic revelation that caused a lot of distress among friends and family who wished to maintain their Great Controversy worldview.

I separated from the sabbatarian family home fellowship that we had been part of for 20 years, with my wife and children. The Lord told me to join an evangelical church where the gospel was believed and preached, and used a dream to lead us to the small Baptist church where we have been active members for about 5 years. My mother also joined a solid evangelical church. The story is long, and I'd like to just share about her last few weeks with us.

During the time of her sickness and increasing weakness, we had a lot of close fellowship. Knowing the truth of the saving work of Jesus, and the promise that she would be with her Saviour (and not left unconscious in a dark, damp hole) after her death gave us both an immense amount of comfort.

She wanted her eulogy to reach everyone listening with the gospel. We have unbelieving family and friends, and of those that do believe, many don't understand that they can be saved by the Person and saving work of Jesus.

I'd like to share with you all the eulogy that I delivered in honour of my mother, and for the glory of God.

A Poem by Leif for My Mother

Rest in peace, mother dear;
We will miss the days when you were near.
Your sweet laughter and bright smiles,
That cheered us through life’s miles.

Your memory will be with us always,
The love you expressed in big and small ways.
And though we experience pain and loss,
We know that through Jesus’ cross,

We will meet once again,
Where there will be no more sorrow or pain.
In God’s kingdom made new,
We will be forever with you.

My wife and I will be in LL on Friday the 20th, and would like to plan to join the evening FAF group. Where can we get details?
