Adventist theologian Dr. Clinton Baldwin has resigned from his job as an Adventist theologian, and has publicly-renounced Adventism and Sabbath-keeping in a two-part series that has aired on Jamaica TV. Has anyone read this book yet? I have a friend in my new PCA church who has a SDA friend. My friend is looking for materials to share with this SDA friend. Would this be good? | ||

I just received the book and read it quickly tonight (and through an internet check on his name I came to this page). It's 64 pages, booklet style, with a fair number of graphics to depict the points. A very quick read. I hope to do a quality review of this, but only after contacting Dr. Baldwin and getting clarification on some areas. He focuses on Christ being the fulfillment of the Sabbath, and that if someone is "in Christ" then they share in all the benefits of what Christ fulfilled. It is simple in its style and he says in the introduction that it is intended for any Christian, whether or not one believes in the seventh-day Sabbath. For someone in the PCA, you may be troubled by his answer to "once saved, always saved?" He writes, "Answer: No!!! However, once saved always saved as long as you remain saved. That is, as long as you remain in Christ." "We can always change status [lost of saved] whenever we so choose." In addition to the usual connections between the Sabbath and creation, redemption, blessings, and forgiveness, he also emphasizes social obligations of justice and humanitarianism based on the Jubilee. He concludes that we may break the Sabbath any day of the week with un-Christ-like behavior. It is wonderful to see an Adventist make the connection between the symbolism of OT figures of rest and to explore the ramifications of its fulfillment in Christ. I would not be able to address how an SDA would relate to this booklet. Personally, I would recommend Ratzlaff's "Sabbath in Christ" or Morrison's "Sabbath, Circumcision, and Tithing." |
