FYI--Rose Publishing has just revised and released an updated version of their Christianity, Cults & Religions folder which compares 20 different groups with the core beliefs of Christianity. A new column on Adventism was added in this new edition and is on the front side of the folder between Mormonism and the Unification Church.

I was the author for the newly-included column on Adventism; Paul Carden is the general editor.

This new edition of Christianity, Cults & Religions will soon be in Christian bookstores everywhere if they're not already there; it is now available online here.

Praise God.

Colleen,

Great to hear about your input in this new publication that exposes Seventh-day Adventism. I am especially delighted to learn that local Christian bookstores will sell the copies. I just received the current issue of the Salt Lake City Messenger edited by Sandra Tanner of the Utah Lighthouse Ministry (www.utlm.org). I save all copies. Each new issue reveals new commonalities between Adventism and Mormonism. I learned today that Mormons believe in three levels of heaven with a place for practically everyone. Likewise, in Catholicism, there is an eternal progression toward heaven while in purgatory. The notion of universalism is not merely a tenet of the Unitarians. It is not surprising that this teaching is appealing to many people. Joseph Smith had his first vision in 1822 while Ellen White had her first vision in 1844.

Of all years, Joseph Smith was killed by a mob in 1844. So, something important really did happen in 1844 after all (smile). Two Mormon missionaries, that appeared at my doorstep a few years ago, told me that the Adventists stole their health message. Interestingly, SDA churches do not usually have crosses on their rooftops. The same holds true of Mormon worship centers. Oh yes, both groups teach plural gods as well, and both groups believe they hold the official franchise from heaven.

Moreover, both groups are thriving primarily in third-world countries. Only eight percent of Seventh-day Adventists live in the United States today. Information technology is a significant factor in these statistics. Since America is the birthplace of Adventism and Mormonism, this does not speak well of American-born religions. As with Adventism, Mormonism is also thriving in Africa today. Mormonism claims about 14 million adherents while Adventism claims around 20 million members. Neither group has any incentive to be accurate in their membership statistics. Without any doubt, the forthcoming GC Session in Atlanta will further inflate the numbers beyond reality.

Three cheers, Colleen! It's God's time for this brochure. Thank you for your work on it.

Very interesting, Dennis. And from what I read (in one of the sda mags, no less) the birthplace of Mormonism is geographically close to the birthplace of sda. Their "visitor centers" are quite close to each other, too. Haven't researched this for myself, but the sda article mentioned it (Mormon visitor center) was maybe 3 miles down the road from Hiram Edson's barn (which I believe has been re-built).

I remember that, relatively often, when I heard an adventist person speaking about the Mormon church and missionaries, I could feel a sense of respect and admiration from their part... Don't know if you've ever had the same experience.

I always found it surprising and a bit disturbing, even when I still was an adventist. And that was in Spain, where the Mormon presence is probably not so numerous as in the US. However, I've been looking for statistics and it seems that the number in Spain is about 40,000 members... Interesting, considering that there are about 10,000 adventists and about 200,000 JWs.

In any case, I never had much contact with Mormon people back in Spain. You could see their missionaries from time to time, and I think that most of them where coming from the US.

Skeeter--right now, I think the download is still the old version. I'm so sorry--I suggest you contact Rose by email or phone and tell them what happened. See if they can "make it right" somehow...a copy of the new brochure, or whatever!

I contacted them (they have an online person to talk directly to) they checked and said that yes, the online version is still the old one. so they offered a refund or to send me the email link to download the new version which should be up sometime next week. so I asked them to just email me the new link when it is available.
I told them that the adition on Adventism is really the only reason I wanted it in the first place.
They were very nice about it. :-)

I'm glad, Skeeter. Yes, Jonah--I consider this to be nothing other than an act of God. He is bringing all this to pass in His own way in His time. I am amazed.

It sounds like the new edition is not likely to be in bookstores yet either then - that's too bad because Rick is teaching a short Sunday School class starting tomorrow on comparative religions. It would have been perfect if we could go pick a few of these up today!

The Continued Graying of Adventism

The median age for the Seventh-day Adventist community in North America is 51. This is about 15 years older than the median age among the general population. This doesn't speak well for an American-born religion. After all, North America is still considered to be the most Christian area in the industrialized world. Information technology is certainly a key factor in these statistics among the cults. Moreover, I am most grateful for God's relentless pursuit of rebels throughout the world--thereby revealing His compassion and mercy.

In awe of His saving grace,

Amazing I'm going to order some and keep them in my car as well as add them to the the materials I currently hand out.

It is so amazing how God uses those who are faithful to Him. Paul let me know about Rose Publishing and I get a fre download everyweek. It has been great for Bible study with my children and for my general use.

Colleen,
Will you be carrying these at Life Assurance or Proclamation? I went to order and for one copy they wanted $6.90 for shipping!

Well, we can't "carry" them as we are not allowed to re-sell them; we're not a vendor. I don't know whether or not Dale might eventually carry them...

But I do know this: the downloadable/printable version of the new edition is now online here:

http://www.rose-publishing.com/productdetails.cfm?SKU=404x

It says you can download a free sample, and the new version is pictured at the bottom with sample pages--including the SDA column.

The updated copy at the above link includes the fact that Seventh-day Adventism is newly added to the brochure.

The statistics (number of members) do not reflect the fact that many SDAs are leaving the church without having their names removed from the roster. It was the realization of this fact that pushed me to request removal of my name. I do NOT want to be counted as a member!!!!!
