quote:

I think that it is so important to know this. In a time like this of tolerance, listen, false teaching will always cry intolerance. It will always say you are being divisive, you are being unloving, you are being ungracious, because it can only survive when it doesn't get scrutinized. So it cries against any intolerance. It cries against any examination, any scrutiny—just let's embrace each other; let's love each other; let's put all that behind us. False doctrine cries the loudest about unity. Listen carefully when you hear the cry for unity, because it may be the cover of false doctrine encroaching. If ever we should follow 1 Thessalonians 5, and examine everything carefully, it's when somebody is crying unity, love, and acceptance.

Yes, that is good.
And certainly fits with my own experience.

There are some things I don't agree with MacArthur on.

But I sure agree with that, ain't it the truth?
Give a couple Bible quotes, and no matter what idiotic thing you're in too, just lets all get along and don't make waves...Muslim? No problem, Voo doo? No problem. Tolerance is the watchword, mixed with political correctness.

It ain't eggzactly what the Bible teaches and says, but long as we slap one another on the back and swap spit, it'll be ok. Yeah right, and my uncle is a she.

divisive & unloving.... I've been accused of all that stuff too - and when you know you've allowed yourself to get a little too heated at times, it's hard not to let the accusations sink in. Then the issue becomes your motives and your "tone" and not the subject matter itself. Very good diversion tactic that often works to take the heat off someone trying to defend something that has no basis in fact.

One thing about many modern attempts at unity is how they try to say that we're all believing the same thing, really. If the divisions we have are real, then telling the truth and acknowledging the differences should enable us to better love one another, because we'll have opportunity to forgive people for disagreeing with us, rather than dishonestly saying that we really agree with them.

8thday,

Indeed, false teaching "can only survive when it doesn't get scrutinized." Let us faithfully expose the captors so that the captives can be free.

I like to listen to John M.'s radio show and this is so relevant to me right now. My Lutheran congregation just voted to stay in the ELCA, so I must be going. If anyone speaks out against having gay pastors and the like, he or she is called intolerant. "Can't we just get along and allow others their concience?" "no one is making you change your beliefs". It is sad.

I might go to a LCMS church or a Baptist church or maybe an E-Free or something. I have started visiting them already. May God lead me.

Praying that God will lead you and make it clear what church you are to fellowship in, 4truth.

4truth,

I wholeheartedly agree with your position about liberal views that are clearly condemned by Scripture. Moreover, such views and practices are nonnegotiable for Christ-followers. I would suggest adding a Reformed Baptist Church and/or the Presbyterian Church (PCA) to your list. Personally, I am a member of a Bible-based, non-denominational church. Above all, make your choice of a church family a matter of special prayer. Since most churches today have websites, this will make your church shopping alot easier and faster.

Thanks, Jrt and Dennis.

I'm not asking for doctrines that are "perfect" in my view, but I do need a denomination that at least views the Bible as authoritative.

If doctrine didn't matter to me, I would still be an Adventist, perish the thought.

It seems to me that Paul was one who called for unity, love and acceptance in the body of Christ. Maybe that's why the Jews condemnded him as a teacher of false doctrine?

Neither Jesus or Paul would ever sacrifice truth for the sake of unity. But they nonetheless set it before the church as a goal to stive for. So while I agree in part with what MacArthur said in his quote above, I do take exception to his comment since it implies that we must view with suspicion anyone who calls for unity, love & acceptance. But maybe that's what it has come to in the church as a whole, since there are so many voices out there claiming to have the truth. Perhaps we need to be suspicious of everyone! Perhaps you need to be suspicious of me! Sad its come to this.

In the church I have been attending (non denominational) I do not always agree completely with the way some things are presented... but I figure since I was so wrong about so many things as a SDA I cannot let my preconcieved ideas rule and keep me from learning something different if it is truly Biblical.

I have to be open to at least consider alternate possibilities.. otherwise if I refuse to do that I may as well have stayed SDA (Heaven forbid).

BUT if I have learned nothing else,, it is to QUESTION anything that does not seem to "fit" what my understanding is, because I have learned that MY understanding may not be what God intends it to be... anyway... just saying I am trying to keep an open mind, but not accept everything I hear just BECAUSE it goes AGAINST what I had been taught as SDA either.

Everything I believed while SDA was not wrong just BECAUSE I learned it as a SDA.

My relationship with Christ was there even then, but it is much MUCH stronger now and my understanding of His word is becoming clearer.

I am reminded of a conversation I had with one of my daughter in laws (raised JW) she went to church with me one week and on the way home we talked some and she said she does not believe in the trinity... I was going to argue with her,, but instead just prayed that God would teach her the truth. So I only told her that there were many things that I believe differently now than I did as a SDA but if I wanted to go to a church that just confirmed what I already believed I would still be SDA. But I want to learn TRUTH, what ever that is and even if it goes against what I previously (or currently) THINK is "truth" Then I shut my mouth. LOL

Skeeter, "Everything I believed while SDA was not wrong just BECAUSE I learned it as a SDA."
Well said!

I see XSDAs accepting certain doctrines apparently for that very reason, even though they are unsupportable by the Bible's abundant revelations. In fact, that problem is very troublesome to me right now as I interact here and elsewhere with XSDAs caught up in certain deceptions that SDAs said were wrong and that truly are wrong. "Knee-jerk" acceptance of doctrines that are popular in "mainstream" churches are not always Biblical either, and we must be aware of this.

One of Satan's most devious and effective ploys is to mix truth with error and then convince people to accept all or nothing! "Search the Scriptures," not just using a few "proof texts" which can be and often are misunderstood or misapplied when they stand alone, but surveying every possible thing God's Word says on a subject. This applies even to subjects you think you are sure about. You may be as surprised as I have been on occasion when I found out that I was wrong. But it's far better to have been wrong and find that out, than to think you've got something right and not know it's wrong! (Hope I haven't written this in too confusing a way.)

Continuing in prayer for the journeys we all are on,
Yen
