‘For’, a little word with much meaning.

Last Friday my wife and I went to a place that makes special shoes for diabetics. Turns out that the guy who does this has another profession besides making prosthetic devices. Turns out he is a wonderful Korean fellow who is even more concerned with proclaiming the gospel message of Jesus Christ.

In the examining room there was a little red wagon with the words ‘Gal. 5:1’ written in the bed. Even though I have been in Galatians a lot recently, I could not bring that verse to mind and had to look it up when we got home.

For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. (Gal. 5:1 ESV)

The title for this year’s first quarter Quarterly was ‘The Fruit of the Spirit’ and used Gal. 5:22, 23 as a theme text. Here is what happens when a passage is put into context:

This chapter begins by declaring our ‘freedom in Christ’ before the fruits of the Spirit are outlined in the Adventist theme text. One of the keys for keeping things in context is to understand the meaning and purpose of key little words such as the word ‘for’.

When Paul uses the word ‘for’, he is presenting a logical consequence of what he has just said in the previous passage. So, if we don’t remember what was said we should return and refresh our memories. In chapter four, Paul reminds us that Abraham had to sons. One by a slave woman and one by a free woman. The son of the slave woman represents the law and the other is of faith.

So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman. (Gal. 4:31 ESV)

Think of what you have in Christ when you see a Little Red Wagon.
