This last week was the second week in the second quarter's Sabbath School lessons. The entire quarter is on Romans.

Right...

So I wrote the commentary for the second week which was entitled "Jew and Gentile". One would think it would address Romans 2—second week, second chapter of Romans which discusses Jews and Gentiles all being equally sinful even though Jews have the law...

Wrong. The ENITRE week had not ONE text from Romans in it!! It focussed primarily on Acts 15, the council of Jerusalem when it was decided that Gentiles were not to keep the law, and on Galatians. The lesson tried to acknowledge the new covenant, but it kept stressing that Gentiles were never told NOT to keep the Ten Commandments.

So they spent a whole week trying to nod to the new covenant while establishing that everyone is still supposed to keep the Decalogue. Moreover, they kept referring to the fourth commandment as the one detractors especially focus on when they want to release Gentiles from the law.

The whole thing was badly argued and conceived...

This next week, the commentary is written by Gabriel--our own "Jackob" on the forum, and the commentary for week one was written by Phil Harris.

Don't forget to check out the material on www.BibleStudiesforAdventists.com. The commentary is challenging and insightful, and there's really a wealth of material that addresses Adventist assumptions and exposes the deceptive ways they avoid the essence of Scripture as they go through the quarterly.

Check it out! The commentary for the current week is here: http://biblestudiesforadventists.com/2010/quarter3/week3/index.html

That ought to be very interesting as I am now using the study on Romans from this site as my worship. Not a SINGLE text from Romans. What is wrong with them??? I know, they do not know Jesus Christ.
How can they study Romans and not use it is beyond me!!!!

From the comments on the Sabbath School Quarterly:

quote:

While denying that man in his sinful state can liquidate the debt of sin, denying that we can pay the price for our sin, Adventism sneaks in the payment at the level of buying the grace—buying the payment of sin—moving the target one step further and opposing the evangelical gospel of God’s free grace.

Would that be like buying on credit? Jesus paid for our sins, thus saves us, but we have to pay him back to stay saved, otherwise, He will repossess our salvation?

Well, they teach vegetarianism without Bible verses, forbid jewelry wearing without solid Bible hermeneutic and teach EGW is a continuing authority without a Biblical leg to stand on. So I guess it's about time they magnum opus of the Pauline epistles without the Bible as well

Someone posted a critical comment on an (Adventist) blog about this Romans study and how it is not really a Romans study (it was linked to from a friend's FB).

Check out what they say...and check out my comment (I'm Delina). I've gotten into back and forth with these SDA reinventors before, so I decided just to let my comment stand and not respond to the person who responded to me.

HA! But they CAN'T put down any verses from Romans 2, because someone might read the whole chapter and come across verse 14. The person reading would realize that Gentiles were NEVER given the law in the first place! Then that person might just read the New Testament (new covenant) to see just WHAT the new covenant is! :-)

I could never have "seen" that though, as an Adventist. I was so certain that the SDA church was truth, that I would skip over verses or excuse their contradiction with Adventist theology. I thought that surely Ellen White explained it somewhere. Looking back, I'm amazed at my blindness, but I don't see how I could have been any less blind without God intervening. It was truly a miracle that I came out!

I know what you mean about going back and forth with the inventors, Cloudwatcher...I've done it, too.

Hec, actually, that's a pretty interesting metaphor! I think it's actually pretty much accurate--although they wouldn't say it that way!
