I didn't see the prayer thing, but I know who you're talking about. His name is Wintley Phipps. Here is the description obtained from Wikipedia: Wintley Augustus Phipps (born 1955) was born in Trinidad and Tobago. Phipps is an ordained Seventh-day Adventist minister, world-renowned vocal artist, and innovative initiator of special projects such as the US Dream Academy. He also founded Songs of Freedom Publishing Company and Coral Records Recording Company. Mr. Phipps has been the featured speaker and performer at many notable occasions around the world. He has performed for American Presidents Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama at several National Prayer Breakfast events and other distinguished celebrations. He performed for: the 1984 and 1988 National Democratic Conventions, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and President Nelson Mandela. He has appeared on various programs such as the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. television special, Dr. Robert Schuller's Hour of Power Telecast, the Billy Graham Crusades, at the Vatican, was guest soloist at Diana Ross' wedding ceremony in Switzerland, Saturday Night Live, and the Oprah Winfrey Show. He has also conducted lectures in Europe, Australia, Asia, Africa and North and South America. Wintley is married to Linda Diane Galloway Phipps and they have three sons: Wintley Augustus, II, Winston Adriel, and Wade Alexander.

So there you have it. I believe he currently pastors a church in the Washington DC area, but note that his ministerial credentials are with the Southeastern Regional Conference of SDA's.

Wolfgang, Wintley Phipps lived in Montreal, Quebec when I lived there. I knew him and his father. All of us attended the same SDA church. He was 16 years of age at the time. He has always had a great voice, but I will not buy his cds. I will not give money to any SDAs. Period.

Hey Wolfgang, I agree, Phipps has a beautiful voice! I purchased a couple of CDs a while back and will be keeping them because I always get a blessing from his singing. I think God is using his talent to His glory. The SDAs get puffed up (don't you remember this feeling, "Ha, he is one of OURS!" Don't you wish you were special like US?") but that is sadly just what they do. They won't see it until they look beyond the cross.

Yep I was one of those who were puffed up about it. Years ago I went to a historical site/museum where a family in Windsor Ontario Canada had kept their family home which was the final stop for many people of the underground railroad. As part of the tour there was a video with Wintly singing as part of a Black history event I of course piped up about him and I sharing the SDA history. Thank God these people were solid Christians and his song was just a small part of the presentation
