You've got to see this news story. Richard and I were just aghast when we read that The Pathfinders are a non-denominational organization operated by the Seventh-day Adventists. Who on earth do they think they're kidding? Richard was actually kicked out of Pathfinders when he was a pre-teen because of his non-Adventist friend that he brought to Pathfinders. They went on a camporee, and Richard and his friend didn't hear the hike leader's call to turn around, and the two of them arrived back in camp late. The leaders had been very uncomfortable with the non-SDA friend all along, but this event gave them an excuse to mete out discipline...they kicked Richard out. (It's funny to me now—quiet, introverted Richard got kicked out of Pathfinders because of his persistently bringing a non-SDA friend...!) I just went there and read about it. That is another article full of the "B" word when it comes to calling Pathfinders a "non-denominational organization. Schucks, it was founded by the SDA church and run by SDAs. Who do they think they are kidding?? I cannot picture Richard being kicked out of anything. I thought they wanted SDAs to bring non SDAs. Oh, please--they are conveniently non-denominational when wanting to avoid bad PR...there is such a pattern of deception in this organization. Pathfinders sure isn't run by the Methodists!!! | ||

Maybe it "depends on what the definition of is, is." -You Know- My folks ran a pathfinder group for years that was made up entirely of non-SDA children. While it was non-denominational in that anyone child was welcome, not even my folks would have suggested that their motivation was non-partisan. Pegg  | ||

I just tried googling "pathfinders". Search results are showing up but none of the links will work. I wanted to take a look at the pledge and law as well as the official site. The search results are all saying stuff like "..sponsored by the seventh day adventist church" and "..serving NAD seventh day adventist Pathfinders..." They are adventist all alright. Ok. just got the Wickepedia link to work. The Pathfinder aim is "The Advent message to all the world in this generation". Pretty clearly NOT non-denominational. The motto is "The love of Christ constrains us all." I think I could have picked a better motto than that. Something without the word 'constrains' in it. Sickening to think that young people are taught that the love of Christ constrains them. I don't know about you but my chains have been broken. I am no longer in bondage. Two of my grandchildren are active participants of the Pathfinder Club at the Meadow Glade SDA Church in Battle Ground, Washington. The entire Meadow Glade Pathfinder Club flew from Portland, Oregon to Oshkosh, Wisconsin (or someplace nearby) last week. A large baptism highlighted the event there last Saturday with approximately 35,000 campers and leaders present. Interestingly, my granddaughter made special arrangements to be baptized by her uncle (a SDA youth leader) against SDA working policy, without leading to SDA church membership. This unique request and arrangement involved a frantic personal phone call to my daughter. My grandson successfully resisted the pressure to be baptized there altogether. Obviously, peer pressure was an overwhelming factor at this mass baptism. Dennis Fischer | ||

Colleen, I was re-reading a 2007 Proclamation before giving it to a neighbor and saw Richard's testimony/article about exiting Loma Linda. It struck me how this mild mannered man reached the attention of the SDA headquarters. It warmed my heart to think how 1 person living for the Lord could shake the "higher ups" in such a powerful stronghold. I guess Richard was just getting practice for exiting the SDA church even as a boy! | ||

I personally think that the Boy Scouts of America is a fabulous organization. My brother made it all the way to his Eagle, and I feel that that contributed in the development of his character. (I had a bad experience with the Girl Scouts, but I'm sure they're great too). So, it kind of annoys me that there is even an organization called "Pathfinders." What is so wrong with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts that this organization has to be created? Do they really think that being a Pathfinder is going to mean as much as achieving an Eagle Scout or a Girl Scout Gold Award? When you tell someone that you're an Eagle scout, they know you've accomplished something. If you tell someone that you're in Pathfinders, they're likely to ask what that even is! This is mostly an emotional reaction because I don't know a whole lot about Pathfinders, other than the fact that it is the Adventist version of Boy/Girl Scouts. My first impression of Pathfinders is, to be frank, denominational snobbery. | ||

Growing up, I was a Pathfinder. As an adult, I became a Scout Master in the Boy Scouts. One of the boys hiked the Pacific Crest Trail. It was 1980, and they had to go around Mt. St. Helens but they finished. They did it to get sponsors that would support a Christian Relief Organization. Him, his younger brother and his older sister all went into Christ center careers. While it should be mentioned that we were a church related group, they all were far more Christ centered than anything I had been part of in the Pathfinders. I pulled a stunt on them which I refer to as the "bean menu", after which they all became great camp cooks, not wanting me to do their cooking. Of course, they got me back, but that story will hold for now. Boy of boy, did I ever love those boys, and not just a little proud of them.  Fearless Phil | ||

Enoch, I just have to add to that story of Richard getting kicked out of Pathfinders for bringing a non-SDA friend persistently...the consummate irony of it all was that same year, his own brother was selected Pathfinder of the Year! Colleen | ||
