Just thought you all might be interested in the google alert I received this morning. Take a look at the link for this new book on cultic origins in the US...it includes SDA :-)

Thanks for posting this Esther. It sounds like a very interesting book - I ordered a copy! I live in the middle of the "burned over district" -- less than five miles from Joseph Smith's farm and the beginnings of Mormonism, the Fox sister's home site (the house is no longer standing), and about 3 miles from the Hiram Edson Farm. It will be interesting to read this book!

Praise God finally someone is going to get the SDA institution (not calling it a church anymore btw) tagged correctly!

So interesting! Thanks, Esther! (I'm with you, Sondra, in not calling it a church anymore...)

I thought I was the only one having a hard time calling SDA a church. If you notice my post if I have to call it anything I usually call it SDA movement (which actually is a term they use on themselves. I could go with institution too. Join the club.

SDA: sect, cult, movement, institution. What else?

I'm with you all! Sometimes, if I'm specifically naming it, I'll call it the "SDA Church" (with a capital "C," indicating it's "official" name), just like I might say "Mormon Church."

But something that's really bothered me for a long time is how so many formers still refer to it as "the church." As in, "When I left the church..." I guess it's hard to stop the habit, and I'm thinking ex-Mormons probably have a hard time with this also, since they too were taught to call their cult "the church."

But, we didn't leave "the church." We left a cult. We joined the Church! :-)

Jeremy, how right you are. We finally joined God's church.

I just call it SDA (no church).
God's whole Family is the Church.:-)
I won't call it Adventist or Adventism, either.
I am seriously offended by their commandeering of the word "Adventist".
How dare they!:-(

Every Christian I Know Is An "Adventist".
I Am Much More Of An Adventist Now Than I Ever Was When I Belonged To SDA.

Praise My Great God Who Has Set Me Free --> I Long To See His Face!

The word "organization" is often useful...
