Over on CARM, Gilbert started a thread (which can be found here) entitled "Adventist viewpoint in the new Zondervan Bible Commentary?," with the following opening post:

quote:

As we all know Adventism has been desperate to legitimize 1844 and their investigative judgment myth.

The last few decades Adventism has worked tirelessly to keep the dark side of Adventism from public view, and to appear to be part of mainstream Christianity. They have worked very hard at emphasizing the the "hand" that says, "We are Christians just like you. Won't you accept us?"

A coup of sorts was accomplished recently by Adventism when Zondervan Publishing asked Dr. Roy Gane, professor of Hebrew Bible and ancient near eastern language at the Theological Seminary of Andrews University, to help author the Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary, Volume 1 which is coming November 2009. Roy is a staunch support of Adventism's 1844 sanctuary motif. It will be interesting to see what happens.

http://books.google.com/books?id=2h20V51QKZgC&pg=PA125&lpg=PA125&dq=Roy+Gane+Zondervan&source=bl&ots=QmYmuosVpd&sig=UqdERK-hZ-p3VbVqAWzXrdvjbwo&hl=en&ei=V03KSq7SF5T2sgOV5tyhBQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=10#v=onepage&q=Roy%20Gane%20Zondervan&f=false

And here is some of what I posted in response:

quote:

It looks like Zondervan already let him author a commentary on Leviticus and Numbers in the NIV Application Commentary Series in 2004! See here: http://www.christianbook.com/leviticus-numbers-old-testament/roy-gane/9780310210887/pd/210887

As you can see at the above link, the back cover even mentions that he is a professor at "the Theological Seminary of Andrews University." But it conveniently leaves out the real name of the seminary--it is actually called the "Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary." This gross deception and misrepresentation by Zondervan is incredibly shocking, disgusting, and disappointing. They knew that if they said "Seventh-day Adventist," people would think twice before buying the book. And it even has an endorsement by Billy Graham on the back cover.

I am not giving Zondervan my business any time soon!

If anyone would like to contact Zondervan, an Evangelical Christian publishing company, and let them know what you think about this or inform them of the facts about Adventism, here is their contact page: http://www.zondervan.com/Cultures/en-US/Company/ContactUs.htm?QueryStringSite=Zondervan

And here is the author bio for Roy Gane at Zondervan's site: http://www.zondervan.com/Cultures/en-US/Authors/Author.htm?ContributorID=GaneR&QueryStringSite=Zondervan (Again, they leave out any mention of him being SDA, or of the seminary being SDA.)

Me neither Jeremy. I don't know what to say about it, right now I am disgusted.

The fight is hard enough without having the people calling themselves evangelicals making it harder.
People have got to where they will go for anything...its probably the almighty dollar talking.

I'm sure Zondervan's idea was reaching a demographic, SDAs, that they hadn't reached before. But as for why evangelicals would listen to SDAs, or go for stuff that is anti-Gospel in general like Word-Faith for instance: I suspect a lot of people have been conditioned to look to an institution or a pastor or a building or a church service to feed them, instead of being fed by the Shepherd Himself. Consequently, they are all spiritually starving and ready to eat anything just to see if it will sate their hunger pains. Funny, in some places you see these buildings getting bigger and bigger, and some of these pastors getting richer and richer, but the people in the pews are getting hungrier and hungrier. So they'll go looking for anything different than what they have, thinking maybe it is the food they're missing.

As for me? I guess the fact that I don't consider myself an evangelical makes me feel like this isn't my fight. I have a sneaking suspicion there are a lot of evangelicals who think SDAs are great because they preach that we had all better work harder to keep the Ten Commandments.

"Hey, these SDA's are right! Ya'll folks need to get working at keeping the Ten Commandments. Or else you're gonna burn with heeeeeeelllllll fiiiiiire where the worm dies not and the flames lick your toes 'cause you didn't keep all the Ten Commandments like you should have. Boy howdy! Let's put one of the SDA teachin' folks in our little commentary so's people will start keeping the Ten Commandments more. Then let's all run over to the local courthouse and start a fight with the ACLU by trying to pin up a copy of the Ten Commandments. Woo hoo!"

I emailed Zondervan a few days ago--I asked them--"What are you thinking?! Asked them if they had Mormons and JWs writing commentaries; explained some of the worst beliefs and said they were spitting in the face of all the people that have lost $, jobs, family members & reputation when they had the courage to leave SDA. I wrote this shortly after watching the moving documentary about the leaders & members of the WCG that stood for the truth of scripture and lost money, reputation & power. I was, as Colleen says, 'exercised'!

PS So far, I haven't heard back from them :-)

Has anyone else tried to watch the link Colleen posted on Internet Explorer? It works quite fine on Firefox, but does not show any videos on IE for me.

Hmm.

IE 8

I don't know what the problem is. Perhaps it will work after I shut down the computer and give it a break for awhile! :-)

Thank you Colleen :-)
I watched it last night. I had already seen the SDA ones but not th one about the WWCOG
If ONLY Adventists would be honest enough and courageous enough do the same thing.
Admit error and move forward with TRUTH.

Is there a way to download that ? or a place to order it on DVD ? Just maybe my MIL would watch it if she thought it was not about SDA.....but if a SDA watches it they cannot help but see the parallels..

I found it... the dvd is $7.00 or $5.00 each for 10 or more. I think I will order 10 and keep one and have others to share.
