We have decided this year to have our own Thanksgiving dinner before my in-laws arrive. My husband thinks it would be to offensive to cook and eat turkey in front of them:-(. I'm tired of always having to modify our arrangements, so they won't be offended. I'm just frustrated and am most likely acting selfish right now, but, do you think they would ever not do something so not to offend me or my family?? We are always the ones who need to change, for them. Lord, help me to be patient and understanding. Any advice??

What I don't understand is what kind of a witness it is to what you believe now, if you modify your life to fit a cult religion?

If they remain comfortable and confident, and never feel dis-at-ease, what chance for them will there ever be?

Of course some appear to believe that Adventism is a cult, but their relatives, even though Adventist, are not really part of that cult.

Philippians 3:18 (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:

Buuuttt, maybe someone could explain to this old hard headed never been. Sighhhh.

God bless you with his wisdom as you work this all out Cortney.

River,

If you are ever going to understand 'Adventist logic', you must stop being logical.

In response to Cortney's dilemma, let me share one of my experiences:

Once when I was camping with my SDA family at a Harris Reunion, I pitched my tent downwind of the rest so silly me thought there would be no problem if I fried up some bacon for breakfast.

Well, you would have thought I have committed the unpardonable sin tempting them with the fleshly pleasures of the decadent world and they were in danger of going to hell for having been enveloped by the scent of my breakfast. Of course, me being such a silly person that I am, I wondered how they could have known what this terrible smell was that I was inflicting upon their olfactory glands.

In any case, my gutless cousins didn’t have the courage to come to me, me being fearless in more than one way. Instead, they went to Jan, who had no idea how to comprehend why they could be concerned with our private eating habits.

So, let me try to explain, but please, don’t read this with your logic hat on. It’s just the way it is. Well, let me try: When you have a persecution complex, everybody is out to get you and your apostate family is the most dangerous of the lot. Their view of this is that I was attempting to send them to hell with a little bit of smoke seeping from the pits of Gahanna. Even clean meats will pollute your body and eliminate your chance of passing the investigative judgment.

Sighhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!

We have the same problem. Some relatives who insist on having holiday meals together eat meat and others don't. Some eat "clean' meat, I eat "anything that moves". What we have done is Potluck. You bring what you can eat, I cook what I want to eat, and anybody who wants to share, dips in. There is always plenty for everybody, including the required left-overs.

Phil-lol! You are right River! Why do I modify myself for them? It's my home and my tradition! It's not like I am worshipping Baal. They think I'm going to hell, anyway. My mil told me anyone who leaves the Truth:-( is going to burn in hell, unless they come back. That is verbatim:-( I only wish they could just accept 'the change' and move forward in Christian love, but this is not possible for them. My first Thanksgiving as an Sda was very weird- vegan style turkey-I did get sick!! But out of Christian love, I didn't judge. Of course, I thought I was being a more 'fruitful servant' by not partaking of meat, sad:-( Christians are suppossed to be comfortable around each other and accepting, this is not so with Adventism. Sometimes it almost seemed like a competition, who ate the healthiest which means holiest, in Adventist circles. Sorry for the bitterness, I'm just tired of the games and criticism. On my facebook page I have had to delete SDA people because of comments:-(

Cortney, re: the inlaws being scared you might taint the clean food with turkey - yes very likely! My sda sister in law will not use any skillet or pan that has been used to cook any type of meat, "clean" or "unclean".

Phil old buddy, I needed that. Pardon me but I laughed till I hurt.

And Hec! I could just see your chicken wings disappearing and you left to eat gray goo. Haaaa!

On a more serious note, if I can be serious. It just really bothers me to see God's children feel like they have to hide or not eat.

I have said it before, I hurt when you hurt, don't ask me why, as Phil says, that's just the way it is.

Cortney, we love you, and stand by you, I may pretend to not understand at times, but I do.

Look up child of God, there will come a day when you won't be bothered by this, you will be settled in the Lords faith and committed on a deep level. Ask Colleen if I am not telling the truth here. It may always be that you have to contend with Adventist in some way, seeing you have Adventist family, but this kind of thing will ease off.

I know it's hard to see it now, but God will bring you to a place in him when your not much bothered by all this. You will be settled in the Lord, rock solid.
I am praying for you right now, even as I write to you.
Just set your eyes on Jesus and never look back.
There is nothing to look back too, and his banner over you is love.

Phil; the smell of frying bacon goes far and wide!!!!!!!! :-) There's no way you could have shielded your relatives from the smell of bacon unless you moved your campsite a quarter of a mile away! That was funny!!! :-):-):-):-)

A relative of mine who often cooks Thanksgiving dinner for lots of relatives, will cook a turkey and also a nice vegetarian dish made of sliced potatoes, mushroom soup and an Adventist fake meat (something called Swiss Steak, I think). It works out really well. :-)

My suggestion is that you serve both turkey and vegetarian on trays; and don't let their comments get in the way of your freedom in Christ. :-)

Why not make it potluck. You provide the turkey, stuffing and some veggies and your adventist relatives bring what they want to eat, plus a salad, yams and I am sure some of them make a good sugary dessert. That would make it easy for them to eat what they want and you do not have to make it. Just a thought and suggestion.

Naw, you guys are telling her wrong, the Adventist will sneak in and eat all the meat and leave Cortney with just green beans.

Eat the meat before they get there Cortney, that way at least you'll get something to eat. :-)

Sad, sad, sad, or is it sda, sda, sda?

We left the organization to be free in Christ. But the organization has not left us, so we are still in bondage. I cry with Paul, "who will free me from this body of death?" It's a good thing that Paul did not leave it there, but also gave us the answer, "but thanks be to God who gives us the victory in Christ Jesus."

Just a note regarding Thanksgiving. No turkey for us this year. I have found this little metal device that holds a can of beer, 1/2 full, and then you cram the whole chicken down on top of it. Cook about two hours at 350 and then enjoy one of the best tasting chicken you have ever had.

Any adventists complaining about eating chicken should be reminded that eggs are chicken, too.

Eggs are not chicken unless the rooster has baptized them.

Surfy, what is that device? Where do you get it? Do you use the beer to cook the chicken?

Good, consistent SDAs shouldn't be eating eggs either, b/c EGW says not to.
