What did Jesus mean when he said "it is finished"? My sda husband says it doesn't mean what I think it means, nor do most religions know what Jesus really meant

When Adam and Eve sinned, God promised a Redeemer. God's promise to mankind was fulfilled when Jesus died on the cross.

When Jesus died the promise was complete. When he arose three days later that was the proof that “it is finished”.

Any other explanation does not fit the context of why 'the blood of a perfect Lamb' was required to complete this promise and pay the debt of our sin.

Phil is right. The promised atonement was complete, and the resurrection gave us the ability to have the life of Jesus in us, bringing our spirits to life. In fact, Jesus' "It is finished!" is the same sort of "rest" or "ceasing" that God did at the end of creation.

God ceased work on the seventh day because His work was complete. "It is finished," He might well have said. Adam and Eve brought unrest and work back into the picture. At His death, however, Jesus completed the work of atonement that ushered God's rest and finished work back into human experience.

Once again mankind could live in the finished work of God, as Adam and Eve did before they sinned.

"It is finished!" These are the best words ever spoken on our behalf.

John 19:30 is one of my favorite verses. Usually when I share the gospel I use this verse at some point.

It is finished translated from Greek basically means "the debt has been paid in full!!!"

The sin debt was paid at the cross, there is no investigative judgement The sin debt was paid by the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world.

The Isrealites had a debt of law to pay to God and followed it, but now a righteousness apart from the law is here because Christ is the end of the law (see Romans ch 3 and 10)

The debt is paid in full. From my understanding, the word has been found in old Greek legers when debtors paid their bills

Also SDAS love to point to the verse in Matthew where Jesus said not one jot or tittle will be changed until all is FULFILLED. Jesus fulfilled everything to which the law and prophets pointed to, it was finished at the cross

When Adventist teach that we must perfect our lives to really have eternal salvation, then what is being said is that Christ died for no purpose. There is something we 'must do'...become perfest by our own deeds.

This is why they think Jesus death on the cross did not completed God’s plan of salvation:

quote:

I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousnessb were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose. (Gal. 2:21 ESV)

For Adventist, it was not finished on the cross. As Paul says in Gal. 1:3-9, they teach another gospel which is no gospel at all.

In my opinion, the difference between "Jesus died to give us a chance (or to give us probation)" and "Jesus died to save us" is vast and unbridgeable.

I agree, Mary. It is a completely different "gospel"—which is no gospel at all.

For He has (not will, starting in 1844) rescued us from the dominion of darkness & brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, in whom we have redemption, and the forgiveness of sins. Col:1:13 & 14. Done deal, this completed sacrifice on the cross. God is not a liar and the statement "It is finished" is pretty clear.

Have your husband, from the Bible, show you what it means.

Corney,

Could you get your husband to share what he thinks Jesus meant when he said; "It is finished"? What Scripture does he have in mind?

I live and work in a practical world of projects. When I design and build something it is not ready for use. Because I am a mortal person with flaws, it must be tested and the bugs worked out before it is ready for use. Only then can I say; "It is finished". Jesus Christ, being perfect and being God incarnate, didn't have my problem.

When Jesus said; "It is finished", his reason for his earthly ministry was perfectly complete. No 'test run' required.

What he thinks it means is that Jesus's work/mission/ministry on earth was done. He believes, 'it is finished' will not happen until Judgement Day.

Cortney,

Ok...what about Scripture to support this?

I believe it was finished. But he is convinced that these are all lies, it is not finished for him, anyway. The SDA church has a way of twisting verses and texts to fit into their belief system. Is there one solid verse to disprove his point? If so, he will still find a way to argue it doesn't mean what it says. sda's do that alot, i know this for a fact.

Our pastor had a sermon recently where he mentioned Jesus saying it is finished and explained, from the Bible, what was finished.

It's impossible for SDAs to think anything was finished at the Cross. After all, their theology says the Investigative Judgement has to happen, and nothing is finished until probation has closed.
