Hi y'all,

A few years ago my SDA SIL passionately explained to me that she "needed to have rules so she could eventually become pefect so Jesus would come back."

Where did that idea come from? Was it the Ellen's writings or someone else? Is this basic SDA doctrine taught to members?

Sorry if I've asked this before. My husband and I got into a discussion about it and I'd like to know exactly where it came from.

thanks!

:-) Leigh Anne

Leigh Anne---"Christ is waiting with longing desire for the manifestation of Himself in His church. When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced in His people, then He will come to claim them as His own." Christ's Object Lessons, pg. 69

See, it all depends on us!!! (Well, when she says 'His people', she meant SDAs). There are alot more of her teachings on perfectionism--this is only one example.

Thanks Nowisee. That is what I learned in all my sda upbringing. I threw away all my egw books and sda books so I have nothing to reference from. I do not like to go onto the egw website on the internet. It leaves me with a creepy feeling.

According to Ellen White's quote cited above (from COL, page 69), Seventh-day Adventists can supposedly control or manipulate the return of Christ. Since the first PERFECT Adventist has not yet been identified and NEVER will be, Jesus will NEVER return (according to their revered prophetess). I remember inserting that quote into my sermons to receptive SDA congregations. What a bogus quilt trip! Sadly, I could cite many quotes from Ellen White without any notes. I well remember how good I felt about quoting Ellen from the pulpit. It made my sermons more authentic and more acceptable to an SDA audience.

It all has to do with passing the investigative judgment and receiving the seal of God, only those who have completely overcome every sin and character flaw by the time their name comes up, will pass--at least that's the SDA Gospel. Here's a quote to that effect.

quote:

Not one of us will ever receive the seal of God while our characters have one spot or stain upon them. It is left with us to remedy the defects in our characters, to cleanse the soul temple of every defilement. 5T 214.2

And another one...

quote:

Christ has given us no assurance that to attain perfection of character is an easy matter. A noble all-around character is earned by individual effort through the merits and grace of Christ. God gives the talents, the powers of the mind; we form the character. It is formed by hard, stern battles with self. Conflict after conflict must be waged against hereditary tendencies. We shall have to criticize ourselves closely, and allow not one unfavorable trait to remain uncorrected. COL 331

HOLY COW!!

Okay, I think I've read that here before. My husband swears the church didn't teach that, but then I asked him where his sister got the idea. He just shrugged his shoulders.

He hasn't attended SDA church on a regular basis for well over 20 years, and the last time he visited at all was several years ago. I imagine he's forgotten quite a bit, or has blocked stuff like that out after being with me all these years. However, if I ask him if he still believes in the IJ, he answers yes.

Thanks everyone ~ This just goes to show that according to Ellen G White, Sabbath or not, salvation is impossible and there's no hope for the regular folks...

Sigh,

For all you sinners out there... sorry, I guess God's grace isn't helping you otherwise you'd be perfect! :-)

... why would they have burning ears? ;)

I'm just glad to be part of Leigh Anne's "regular folks"! I need Jesus becauses there's no way I can get to heaven through my "individual effort." haha! I still remember the first time I went to church on a Sunday. It felt like I was jumping off a cliff... I prayed, "God... You have to come through on Your promise that all I need to do is believe since I no longer worship on the "right" day." It was really scary to me and at the same time very liberating since I had found my freedom in Christ and I was totally depending on Him!

When God told me to go to the church He had picked out for me, I was excited as this is what He told me to do. I had been nervous attending church on Sundays until that day. But I knew God did not want us to neglect gathering together. Then when I sat down in that BIG church I had the most incredible feeling of having come home. I have not had any problems/feelings attending church on Sunday since then. Just my experience.

Amen, Vivian! Yes--Sunday is a scary thing at first. I know what you mean about reminding God that He has to be enough--because if it's true all we have to do is believe in Jesus, then He needs to confirm Himself when we risk letting go of that "seal" of salvation!

He comes through. He is utterly faithful!

It is so sad to me how the falsehood sticks with people for sooooo long, even if they don't go anymore, they still hang on to it like it was true. There must be a double weight on those people who not only subscribe to sda beliefs, but have since given up on walking in it (even if they have forgotten alot - which I can see the need to block it out if you are not going to attempt to follow it). The thought of that makes me very sad.

Thanks for those quotes. I think they need to be included in something I wrote awhile back.

I believe there are some delusional sda's out there who claim to have no sin in their lives or are living a sinless life, or have achieved perfection. I read it somewhere.

My thoughts are...as soon as you claim you have no sin, then you become guilty of a lie and of pride. The Bible says that. No wonder so many people who try so hard just end up giving up on the entire thing because it is just too hard to be perfect!!

I've also heard that the adventists were told that they were the reason Jesus couldn't come back yet. They had not reached that state of perfection. It is absolutely an adventist reality that this is the belief.

You said it so well, above, Colleen.

Richard gave me the same encouragement about six years ago. I think it was Richard who likened it to a baby eagle stepping off the cliff for the first time--letting go of the sign of the old covenant and actually trusting totally in the Lord.

Wow, what an experience!

The first time I went into a "Sunday" church I was still a SDA and I am ashamed to admit I went there looking for fault.

Instead I found a church full of warm and friendly people seeking God and who truly care about each other.

That first time was also the day I saw what is now my favorite quote printed in their bulletin. "When a man who is honestly mistaken learns truth, he will either quit being mistaken or quit being honest." Of course when I read it that first time I was sure in my own mind that it was THEY that were "mistaken" :-\

What a lot I have learned since then and what a LOT I STILL have to learn and un learn.
I guess I shouldnt expect to be able to UNlearn 40+ years of false doctrine in just a couple of years, but it sure would be nice :-)

God truly confirmed His will for my family the first time we went to a Sunday church. We had not been attending our church for a year or so due to a difficult pregnancy, during that time we read Truth Led Me Out and began doing our own research. We knew our life was empty without God but we knew we couldn't stay in the SDA church.

We were choosing between two options and when I got online to check out the one we ended up at we saw that there was a very casual atmosphere there and were very enticed by that sort of freedom. There was something very inviting about a church that says come as you are. So we did. Blue jeans and all. We could not believe our eyes when we saw people walking in to the worship center with coffee! =) We were so happy. Yet, this was not the confirmation- just incentive... =)

As the church sang in worship, arms reaching to God, much like my children have reached for me in their greatest moments of need, I began to feel conviction that these people were NOT play acting. I was so deeply moved. The music was familure to me because it was the music on the radio that had been ministering to my heart the last few years of emptiness at our church. We found our home that morning.

On the ride home I shared with my husband the chills and conviction I had during worship and he said he experienced the same thing. God told us that we were exactly where He wanted us. Only a couple weeks later I surrendered everything to God and recieved a new birth in the Spirit. We have been back every Sunday since. God is Good. And He is so loving to confim Himself to our doubting and forgetfull minds!!

You know, in picking apart that Ellen White blurb this stuck out at me ~

"Christ is waiting with longing desire". Now, I'm studying the book of John at BSF. Here's a guy who knew Jesus intimately. Someone Jesus knew and loved, and could actually touch in person. Even John didn't write anything so emotional about Jesus. How the heck would EGW know what Jesus is feeling after he ascended to Heaven?!?! That drives me crazier than anything. I believe those flowery and emotional words lure people into deception. In bringing it up to my husband he said "well since we know that Jesus loves us it's very possible that he would feel that way..." I can see where EGW's writings would be very attractive to someone who 'thinks' they need more truth than what the Bible has to offer...
