There's a new argument afoot in some "camps" of Adventism. It goes something like this:

The "Scripture" mentioned in 2 Timothy 3:15—"All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness," is the Old Testament. We know that because the Old Testament was the only "Scripture" available to the apostles, and Jesus Himself quoted from the OT and confirmed its authenticity.

Therefore, the only "Scripture" we know for sure is inspired and useful for correction and instruction is the OT. Since the NT canon was finalized by the Catholic church, we can't trust its accuracy any more than we trust the Catholic church itself. The NT, therefore, is in a category similar to that of EGW--great devotional reading, but not without error.

Consequently, we don't have to take Paul seriously because the NT is actually a Catholic creation.

Sigh morphs into groan...

You get where this is going.

You have GOT to be KIDDING !!!!!!

Is it true that the NT canon was finalized by the Catholic church ? I have never heard that before.

Soooo... I guess they are heading back to accepting the OT only,,, and if they do that.. then what ? does that mean they go back to being Jews ? if they cant accept the NT then they cant accept the information about Jesus... from His birth, His ministry, His death, burial and ressurrection are all in the NEW Testament.... so if they cant accept the NT then how can they accept Christ as the Messiah ?

This is another argument being put forth by ignorant people which will only make them look the fools they are. I love it when this happens because it is an apportunity to vindicate the truth and expose their naked lies.

The New Testament Canon lists existed as early as 170 ad.

The Catholic Church didn’t make an official list until 1546.

The book of Hebrews contains massive quotes from the Old Testament which support every point being made concerning Jesus Christ. This shows that the gospel message can be easily preached using only the Old Testament.

So everybody, do your homework and keep informded.

What part of omnipotent as in 'OMNIPOTENT GOD' and "But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth..." (John 16:13) do they fail to understand?

Well, Peter called Paul's writings, scripture, right here in 2 Peter 3:15-16 "...as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the scriptures."

Ahhh... "the rest of the scriptures." So, the apostle Paul's writings are included in scripture!

If Adventist could just get rid of that pesky Paul!

Its like having a burr under your saddle, you gotta take off the whole saddle to get rid of the burr.

And here's a website that says a little about the canons - Old and New Testaments - of scripture.

Colleen, where did you hear that? What camps? Is this more than just some ignorant people trying to come up with some theory?

Phil, your reaction is exactly Richard's...this will only make them look foolish.

Hec, I'm aware of this argument showing up on some blogs...

The Scriptures MUST be watered down in Adventism so that the writings attributed to Ellen G. White can float.

ANYTHING to get rid of that pesky Paul and his emphasis on salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Jesus Christ ALONE for salvation!

Have you seen the latest Adventist Bible? Published through Nelson under the name Remnant Publishing, it has all its commentary by EGW posted throughout the pages of text. I saw one given as a birthday gift this past weekend to a family member. The only thing missing was a picture of EGW in a pope's mitre on the front page with her "imprimatur" beneath.

When I said "if they cant accept the NT then they cant accept the information about Jesus... from His birth, His ministry, His death, burial and ressurrection are all in the NEW Testament.... " I didnt mean that the information was ONLY in the NT. But that is where it is shown that the OT prophecies concerning Christ are fulfilled. So if they throw out the NT they might as well go back to Judiasm and still be looking for the messiah.
Especially since they dont believe that Christ FINISHED the work anyway but believe He only did a part and that we have to do the rest ourselves.

Paulineprimacy,
Hi from me, too!
Sadly, there are many Adventists who will think this new Adventist Bible is the perfect gift to give or receive...

Hi Pauline...welcome! What's wrong with Nelson publishing? Isn't that a Christian publishing house? Is this being sold in Christian bookstores?

When I get discouraged over stuff like this I have to remember that the "battle belongs to the Lord"...but He does call for soldiers.
