Wow, this is a book I would recommend to anyone transitioning out of Adventism or having questions in regards to the 'spiritual gifts' of EGW. So many times he pointed out how she continually supported the 'shut door' theory, all the way till after 1851! Not one of SDA's unique teachings is 'her idea', as I thought or was taught to believe. The Sabbath, Soul Sleep, IJ, Health message were all other people's ideas or belief and EGW basically just backed these up with 'visions' for which the Adventist church has given her the credit for! The SDA church has worked diligently to cover up her first works, even in Canright's own time this was going on! EGW started out involved in very 'charismatic' bible groups, the kind where you fall to the floor and do crazy rituals like such, in which many in her time believed her visions were not 'visions' but a manifestation of her illness(bump to the head) mixed with charismatic influences, her young impressionable age, and pressure from her 'money driven' husband. They also though she managed to put herself in these 'trances', by performing certain rituals, it is medically possible for one to stop breathing in a state such as EGW was in her visions. Not only that but, these weird 'no breath' occurrences have been documented in other people. It is a type of self-induced hysteria. She would have to 'fix up' visions to please her husband, especially if something was approved without his blessing. It is just unbelievable to me how Adventists can continue down this road of 'we have the truth', when their denomination is grounded in falsehood and deception from the roots.

I read several of Canright's writings years ago when I was studying Adventism, and although he wrote around one hundred years ago, he uses all the same arguments as the modern writers, and is very well aware of them.
He knew about EGW's plagarism, the law and the covenants, false and true prophets, the state of the dead, everything. Although the style in which people wrote 100 years ago is a little heavy, I highly recommend his writings: Seventh-day Adventism renounced, Ellen G. White, her claims refuted, and the one about the Sabbath, being neither from paganism nor the papacy. That guy really understood his stuff. No wonder the SDAs hate him.
See my blog for what he said on the state of the dead:

God bless, and sleep tight (but don't cease to exist!)

I also liked how Canright went into detail on all of the 'false prophets' during this time period, it wasn't just EGW having visions and revelations! It was a phenomena of that time period. My question is.. Who was it really?? could God have truly given multiple people different visions and revelations, if it is not of God, than it must be of a force in opposition to God, to confuse and divide perhaps..

Keep up the humor, Doc!! Wonderful. It helps us deal with this stuff!

Cortney, there is another book, written back in the 60's, that you must read sometime! I guess I must have loaned it out again & have forgotten the title. I found it on amazon, the author's first name, I believe, is Norman. It is all about Canright and the end of the book will make your fur fly (if you have any, that is). The Christian author had mentioned the name Canright to some authority figure in the sda church and got such an over-reaction that he went and did some very detailed research. Forgive me for not having the name at my disposal, but can look it up and let you know. It is something that I wish could be re-printed. I think maybe the author is Norman Douty, but I couldn't swear to it.

OK, it's "The Case of DM Canright" by Norman Douty, 1964. If you google it, the entire book is on the internet!

It is worth reading!!!!

One more post, then relatives beckon!

The subject of Canright & SDA education comes together due to the fact that our Bible teachers, because they had been taught this by the church, continually broke/break the 9th commandment when they taught/teach that Canright died a 'lost man', repenting on his deathbed, etc, etc.

Shame, shame..

I just read the last chapter about Canright's diary. I shouldn't have, it just made me mad. I bet the White estate still has it. I wish someone in his family had done something legally to get it back. So much for honesty and integrity. They must have really wanted that book.

I keep wishing someone high up in the church will come to Christ and expose what the church is teaching. I keep hoping that will change things. Then I remember Canright, Ford and the multitudes of pastors who have left. It won't make a difference. (sigh)

On a brighter, happier note... Jesus is in control.

Doc, you're funny!

While doing a search for the book by Canright I came across this.
http://www.sdanet.org/atissue/books/canright/20.htm
It is a link to a book written by Canrights secretary (apparently an SDA) as she says in chapter 20 of her book that Canright wanted to return to his SDA roots but could not after 20 years out and criticising the church. She pointed out the wording on his grave marker indicating he was an "elder" she said that term is used in the SDA church but not in the Baptist church where he later held his membership. Links at the top of the page indicate it is all on a SDA website. (of course)
Think there is any truth to any of it ? I have heard before that he "recanted" in later years, but didnt know the information came through his secretary.I guess after all these years it is probably impossible to know for sure if she knew (or was honest) about what she wrote or not.

go to Truth or Fables website, there are copies of letters by a Elder Ballenger (a close friend of Canright's) refuting DM Canright ever recanted his stance on Adventism. As far as the secretary, she was not even in his life at the time of his passing, my guess is she was probably paid a pretty penny by the denomination to 'cover up' what ever may have erupted after his book was published??

Cortney,
You are probably right.
Canright was dead and gone,, nothing to keep his "secretary" from making $$$ publishing a book of her own. It wouldn't have made a very interesting book I suppose for her to say she agreed with everything Canright wrote and that he truly believed what he wrote.... where would be the "story" in that..?
Knowing what he knew,, I find it impossible to believe that he would have EVER desired to go back into Adventism.

I was thinking that too, Francie.
His refutations of things Adventist are spot on in every way. He knew what he was talking about. There is no way he would have gone back.

When I was an Adventist, I tried to be truthful - lying would make me feel guilty; but if it was a little lie for the sake of the SDA "TRUTH," - then I could do it.

I was pretty zealous for the SDA "truth," even going door to door, passing out Ellen White books (such as "The Great Controversy"). Once when a lady asked what church it was from, I said (with a sinking heart becuase often people wouldn't take books when they knew the books were SDA); "Seventh-day Adventist."

She missunderstood. "Southern Baptist?" she responded. I said nothing. I wanted her to take the books. "I'll take some," she replied and she did. I came away from that thinking that had been a successful witnessing encounter.

I'm not surprised that the SDA leaders would want to preserve the "one true church" by publishing a lie.

Now that I'm a Christian, I feel bad about that and hope that lady wasn't decieved into joining a false church.

Asurprise,

She was probably just upset that they weren't books by "Southern Baptists". Hopefully she tossed them in the trash.

D.M.Canrights book " Life of Mrs.E.G.White " (The one I have has a Copyright date of 1919 and published in 1953)Is the only book I have of his,, I ordered it off a used book site a couple years ago when I first started questioning... it was very enlightening,, but made me feel very angry toward the "church" to learn that they actually KNEW all this stuff for so many years and yet have never told any of the members about any of it !

I am having my MIL sent Proclamation,,,, and she (I know it is her) in turn is having "Signs" sent to me... (SIGH)
Actually I guess it isnt so bad, because once in a while I will scan through one and read an article or letter sent in and NOW the errors seem to just pop right off the pages.
It just seems so strange that a few years ago I could have read those very same things and seen them behind that "veil" and they would have made sense... or if not at least I would have accepted that it must be true and I was somehow just too dense to understand.... :-(

I wont refuse them though because I am hoping my MIL will at least once in a while actually read a Proclamation and the Lord will see fit to open her eyes. This last one on the scapegoat is one I am going to especially pray that she reads.

Thank you Lord for opening our eyes and allowing us to see :-)

Francie, the book "I Was Canright's Secretary" is probably still for sale in the ABCs. If you read the Norman Douty book, I believe this is addressed and she was also not telling the truth, as Cortney says.

Joyfulheart, didn't the info in that last chapter just make you want to spit nails?? Oh, how afraid the sda church still is of Canright!

Nowisee,

It sure did! Canright was a top leader. When he left, it was a big deal. It makes perfect sense for SDA's to be afraid of him, but the deception, stealing and lies - well there's just no excuse for those.

The diary belonged to his family. They should have it if for no other reason than they asked to have it returned. Period.

I got a copy of Adventism Renounced by Canright soon after the prophecy seminar I attended. I showed it to an elder and was told he had sour grapes. Wrong. He had truth and that is what they're afraid of. You are so right Nowisee, the church is STILL afraid of Canright and his testimony!

A good, online resource site with D.M.Canrights books are here:
http://www.nonegw.org/canright/case.htm

You can follow the link at the bottom of the page back to his book on EGW.

Canright gave the SDA's fits for several reasons:

1. He left for reasons of theology

2. He had lived with EGW, he had been a part of the earliest days of the denomination and knew where the skeletons in the closet were!

3.He didn't sever all ties and disappear. He kept friendships with SDA's like Elder Ballenger and often visited Battle Creek, including at least one meeting with Elder Ballenger on the steps of the Dime Tabernacle.

4. For some twenty years he was a Baptist minister and never recanted or showed any regret at leaving the SDA church.

wow, thanks for the links.
I never looked into DM Canright before yesterday... I'd heard his name, but nothing really registered.

And now that I'm reading his book, I'm thinking...everything that all of us "discovered" was here all along! It's amazing!

I wonder what I would have thought if I'd read this 5 years ago...
