Many many times we have listened to our SDA friends and family give us their answer as to what 'Days' Collosians 2:16 really means, I just though I would share with you what the SDA Bible commentary says on the matter:

Holyday. The ceremonial ordinances contain commandments for the observance of various Holy Days-the Passover, the Day of Atonement, Feast of Unleavened Bread, Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles (see Lev. 23).

New moon. The first day of each month, or new moon day (see Num. 10:10; 28:11; cf. 1 Sam. 20:5; Isa. 66:23)

Sabbath days. Gr. sabbata. This may represent either a genuine plural of the Gr. sabbaton or a transliteration of the Aramaic shabbata', a singular form. Hence sabbata, though grammatically plural in form, may often represent a singular (Matt. 28:1; etc.). Either form may be adopted here, for the interpretation of the passage does not depend on whether the reading is "sabbath days," or "a sabbath." The type of sabbath under consideration is shown in the phrase "which are a shadow of things to come" (Col. 2:17). The weekly sabbath is a memorial of an event at the beginning of earth's history (Gen. 2:2, 3; Ex 20:8-11; PP 48). Hence the "sabbath days" Paul declares to be shadows pointing to Christ cannot refer to the weekly Sabbath designated by the fourth commandment, but must indicate the ceremonial rest days that their reach their realization in Christ and His kingdom (see Lev. 23:6-8, 15, 16, 21, 24, 25, 27, 28, 37, 38).

There interpretation of "sabbath days" is completely out of context with what Paul was actually saying. Paul was referring to all the Holy Days, including the weekly sabbath. what else is left? He literally makes reference to all the Holydays-Holydays, new moon, and sabbath days! What other singular sabbath days could he be referring to?

Translation: This verse invalidates our preconceived notion of what it says, therefore, it cannot possibly say what it says. Now go chase this long list of unrelated Scriptural wild geese designed to distract your attention from what this verse actually says.

It's interesting that they omitted the very first feast and/or holy convocation in Leviticus 23 .... the 7th day Sabbath. Just like the other holy days had specific rituals attached, so did the weekly sabbath. Just like the other holy days were nailed to the cross, so was the weekly sabbath.

The only way they can come to this conclusion or interpretation and have a 'bible' to back them up is to use their own Clear Word bible. It's sickening!

Indeed, eisegesis must conclude that this verse does not really mean what it says, because we already have our theological system which says otherwise, so how could the Bible say what the Bible does not say in accordance with the latter days prophet, and everyone must be evil that takes the Scriptures seriously.

I suggest we must all just really, very seriously, ask God to help us to understand what he really wants to say. "Because lots of nonsense is abroad in the world"

What really surprised me when I joined FAF and later studied at the church I now attend is that what God taught me, studying and reading the Bible by myself, is what the other formers learned and what the church taught also. God does not teach one person one thing and another person something completely different.

Pat -isn't that why they made the Clear Word, to keep their sheep in line? Lol! Jesus said "feed my sheep"- I am positve He meant the Full Truth, not EGW interpretations!

Yep! The KJV and other accepted versions don't cooperate with 'their' truth so they came up with a bible that fits their truth. To be honest, I use to love to read it because it is so 'clear' but I found out later that it's clearly blasphemous. I didn't even suspect any foul play.

If that circular line of reasoning (what the SDA Bible commentary says) wasn't so pathetic, it would be halarious!

I too, would have bought that explanation, hook, line and sinker; back when I was an Adventist. I fully believed the SDA doctrines. Somehow I totally missed that the Ten Commandments were a covenant between Israel and God - Deuteronomy 4:13; Deuteronomy 5:2,3 and that the law didn't come until 430 years AFTER Abraham - Galatians 3:19.

It makes me feel like such an idiot that I blindly bought into all this stuff! And because of what?! A couple of "miracles" in Ellen White's life - a line of "proof" texts taken out of context - and because I was taught it. Mormons, J.Witnesses and Roman Catholics have their "miracles" and "proof" texts too. Revelation 16:14 says that demons will work "miracles" in the last days.

Is it just me, or does anyone else bristle at the (not so) subtle way in which Adventism presents its Scriptural "evidence"? They merely provide references in chapter:verse format - frequently in a long list - but rarely do they actually quote the verse(s) being used to support their position.

It comes off to me as another tactic to capture the unsuspecting. It's very intimidating if you don't know your Bible.

A SDA tactic is to mix a lot of Bible verses and present them as "evidence", but a whole bunch of them are not even related. So if you don't look each one up, you thing, Wow! this doctrine sure has Biblical foundation.

Right there with ya, Freeatlast!

Knowing Scripture is the only way to avoid being sucked in by Adventist fast-talking proof-textng.

:-) Sorry to contradict you Colleen, but I disagree. Knowing Scripture is important, but knowing Jesus is more important - and having the Holy Spirit living and working in our spirits.

Mary, you are right. Unless we are born again, "knowing Scripture" is actually a weapon wielded against truth. Given the baseline of being believers, knowing Scripture and submitting our minds to Him is our defense...but unless we know Jesus, knowing Scripture is just "twisted". We have no idea how to understand it, and we'll draw false conclusions.

Thank you, Mary.

I have said for many years: Knowledge only equals Knowledge. Knowledge does not necessarily equal Wisdom.

As an SDA I was always & only 'in my head'. I had knowledge, but that's about it. No one likes arrogance!

I love that saying J9! Thanks for sharing it. I'll be passing it on!
