J9, It is interesting that people were driving several hours to attend the BSF meetings.
They must have been richly blessed in order to do that.
Maybe I should check on it... their driving time doesnt make mine look so bad.. LOL |

Hec,
I'm going to comment, not knowing the first thing about BSF, so take it with a grain of salt, will you?
First of all I get the impression, simply because the whole thing was covered so thoroughly by this man, that he went there, not to glean what he could glean, but with a critical spirit about him.
I'm not saying he's wrong you understand, I'm just saying that that was the impression I got from reading his resignation, is a long resignation like that even necessary?
Two-His comment about women teaching, preaching, or in leadership roles.
I am very familiar with what the bible says, and I also know that God uses women in a mighty way, to both teach and to preach the gospel.
Now, I'm probably going to make every male on the forum mad (so what's new? )But in most cases, the women do a darn sight better job than the men, because so many men do not have or cannot show the element of mercy.
Now you can say,"Well River, now you're going against scripture." No I'm not, I am only repeating facts."
There are women out there that are laying down their very lives to preach the Gospel, bring in and nurture new Christians up in the word. They do without this worlds goods,scrape by on what they can get to bring the gospel into dark areas of our inner cities.
God blesses them with blessings that cannot and will not be counted until a crown of righteousness is laid up for them.
Thank God for the women, because they do jobs that men won't touch, suffer things that men refuse to suffer, and they pick up the cross of Christ daily.
Thirdly- There is no excuse whatsover to go to a Christian based ministry, and not go there to glean what can be gleaned, keeping our spiritual eyes open, our physical eyes open, and make up your mind for yourself what the bible is saying.
If its teaching cultic error such as Adventism does, stay away, and if it is, you'll soon know about it, but you go there to study the bible in a group setting, and I can see the reasoning for the tight controls, since it is interdenominational in nature, they can't have denominational spit fights to break out and destroy the bible study.
An interdenominational study is an awfully difficult thing to wangle into a success, and the very nature of it means there is going to be a lot you don't agree with.

Here's the thing so easily forgotten: I answer to God, the Holy Spirit is my teacher ultimately. EVERYTHING is subject to that. I must constantly be on my guard asking if this is according to God's Word. I can't rely on any one person or teaching. I must still prayerfully consider what comes my way, what I participate in.
My question is that this woman was attacking the method of getting into the Word by the inductive method (it's basic questions), saying it was emotionalism, feelings, psychological, & caused adding unto or taking away from scripture. That this was introducing New Age ideas, mysticism, etc.
Anyone else pick up on that? or have a comment?

Bible study with BSF changed my life. I encourage everyone to get their noses in the Word, and BSF is an awesome way for this to happen.
I'm super-bummed that I have to sit this year out because of my husband's work schedule. |

I appreciate your first person testimony Cloudwatcher - thanks for that.
Skeeter, I drive an hour to get to a city just to shop. I did that twice a week to go to 12 Srep meetings. And once a week for ballroom dance lessons. Priorities?! I even drive 2.5 hours to a really big city to shop (Atlanta). So I have no excuse! LOL
The nearest BSF is an hour from me. There's night classes, mene & women. Maybe my husband & I will go eventually. I am commited to my local bible study for this year.

There are a couple of things I really appreciate about BSF. One - there is a level of accountability demanded of me. If I don't do my lesson for the week, I am simply asked to listen during the discussion. Two - it gets me reading the Bible and plugged into the One in whom it's all about. Reading the Bible was not a skill I learned growing up SDA. At any rate, I highly recommend dropping in the first Monday of the month. Every first Monday they have an introduction class where you can learn more and ask questions. Check out there website for class times. This Monday, Oct 4 is an intro night. Consider yourself invited. |

Hec, this was not at all my experience with BSF. Yes, they do have rules (no discussing denominations/religions--that only gets people fighting) and using the Bible only as you study. Also, you could not miss alot of classes. I never heard any new-age stuff.
I took two years when I was pretty much still sda, and it helped me to start seeing some of the problems in the doctrines. |

I don't know how to find you on FB unless we have a mutual friend or 2 - like River, or Hec, or Angelcat? I'll check out a few.
I'll try to remember to find you. I usually get to Mall of GA or Lennox & Phipps. Lunch would be fun! Maybe we should try to arrange a 'Meet Up'. I know there's one more here from the Atlanta area. What do you think about that?!
