This passage spoke to my heart this morning:

quote:

Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; (I Peter 1:22,23 ESV)

Peter is teaching Christians that real behavior comes from the heart. If we are to have true godly habits and practices, we must be born again.

As Adventist, we naturally focused on outward behavior that didn’t come from a pure heart because simply because our hearts were not truly pure. This, in and of itself, is a sure sign that the Adventist gospel, is another gospel, a false gospel.

Spiritual life begins when our spirit has life. Anything else is just false windowdressing. Outward practices is all you have when your theology is false, Gal. 1:9.

Thank you for sharing this Phil. I have been spending time in 1 Peter this week also. I am memorizing 1:3-5. A very moving passage to me and it gives such strong evidence to the idea that once we are saved it's done; HE is the one who keeps us saved! =) This has been such an amazing letter! I usually gravitate toward Paul, but this is in harmony with Paul (duh, right?). I love these verses you shared!

I think of Eccl. when I think of life before being born again; we are nothing but blades of grass, here today and gone tomorrow. Completely insignificant and purposeless without the rebirth of our souls.

Phil, thank you. Such a profound insight about spiritual life beginning when our spirits have life; all else is windowdressing.

Thank you.

That is beautiful. I couldn't help but think that an adventist would twist this verse because of the phrase "Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth" and then they would stop and say "see, you will have your souls purified if you obey the truth".

In their minds "truth" is the adventist message, and the ten commandments, where I now know that "truth" is the New Testament teachings that Jesus gave us!! It's so nice to read these verses with different glasses on! :-)
