I was reading my Bible again this morning and I noticed this specific reference in my NLT. When I did I had to check my NASB for accuracy it is--

Acts 6 specifically verses 13-14

13They put forward false witnesses who said, "This man incessantly speaks against this holy place and the Law;
14 for we have heard him say that this Nazarene, Jesus, will destroy this place and alter the customs which Moses handed down to us."

I was focusing on specifically on the, "alter the customs which Moses handed down to us."

Interestingly enough this is what Paul was accused of in Acts 21:15-41 (specifically v. 21 & 28) and exactly why Jesus said He could not teach them everything in John 16-5-15 (specifically v.12). Evidence that there was to be a change in the religious requirements as the Original Covenant was restated to the Church.

Unfortunately, it the same things we are accused of when we preach the Gospel and that the Law (nomos) was fulfilled by Christ's death on the Cross. I do think it is humbling that we are accused of the same things Stephen,Paul and Jesus were.

But sadly it seems like the Spirit of the Legalist (Pharisee) is still alive ready to put people into bondage.

Interestingly, I remember a discussion on Acts 6 from when I was a SDA. As I recall, the SDA focus was entirely on the "false witnesses" part to prove that the verse actually supported Moses. I don't recall the destruction being addressed.

Michael I guess what caught my eye was the typical spin or intentional misstatement by the accusers. It read to me that they clearly knew what was being conveyed, by the fact they knew specifically what to twist.

Example: Along with quoting Jesus saying He [Jesus] was the Temple, Stephen would have been telling the Jews that the Law was fulfilled in Christ and they were no longer beholden to that yolk for their Salvation. So the accusers played that up. Paul had to teach the same message as that is what was settled for the Gentiles from the Jerusalem Council in Acts 15. All because of the teachings the Holy Spirit would have given when He came upon them.

Oh and sorry for the bad links-- they are

Acts 6:13-14 (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Acts6:13-14&version=NASB)

and Acts 21:15-41 and John 16:5-15 respectively
