The Two Mountains

An interesting study of the two covenants revealed on two mountains

The first covenant given on Mount Sinai
In Exodus 19 God calls Moses up to the mountain where He tells Moses to say to the house of Jacob and explain to the Israelites “ You have seen what I did to the Egyptians and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Me. Now if you will listen to Me and carefully keep My covenant, you will be my own possession out of all the peoples. You will be a kingdom of priests and My holy nation. Etc.
Then after the words are spoken to the people by Moses they say “They will do all that the Lord has spoken”. Then God says to Moses “ I am going to come to you in a DARK CLOUD so that the people will hear when I speak with you AND WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE YOU. Then He tells them “Anyone who touches the mountain will be put to death.” Then into Chapter 20 He comes down in the Think dark cloud and declares the covenant “The 10 Commandments”.

The second covenant revealed
In Matthew Chapter 17 Jesus takes Peter, James, and John up on a high mountain. He transforms in front of them, and His face shines like the sun. Even His clothes became as white as the light. Then suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared to them, talking with Him. The Peter said to Jesus, “Lord it is good for us to be here! If You want, I will make three tabernacles here: One for You, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
While he was speaking suddenly A BRIGHT CLOUD covered them, and a voice from the cloud said: “This is My beloved Son. I take delight in Him. LISTEN TO HIM.!”
When the disciples heard it, they fell facedown and were terrified. Then notice Jesus comes up to them and TOUCHES them and says “Get up; don’t be afraid.” And when they looked up they saw no one EXCEPT HIM, JESUS ALONE.

It’s amazing the contrast between the two covenants and the two mountains. The first one, no one was to go up or even touch the mountain or they will be put to death. It was covered in a dark cloud. God said He would come down and speak so that they would always believe Moses.
In the second one, Jesus is transformed into Glory, Moses and Elijah appear which represent the Law and the Prophets. Peter speaks and says he would like to make a tabernacle for all three, putting Jesus equal with the Law and the Prophets. But then a Bright Cloud appears and they Hear God speak saying Jesus is His beloved Son in whom He delights, Listen to Him! God is revealing that Jesus is more glorious than the law and the prophets and He wants them to listen to Jesus only. When the disciples became afraid, Jesus touched them and said to not be afraid. When they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus alone.
What a beautiful picture of God’s Grace and Glory revealed to us in Jesus. This is why Paul was able to contrast the two covenants when He called the first one the ministry of death, but the new which is more Glorious - 2 Corinthians 3. And the covenant of slavery verses the covenant of freedom in Galatians 4.

There is another interesting thing taking place on the second mountain where Jesus is transformed into Glory. It can be seen in the names of the 3 disciples that Jesus took with Him.

Peter= petros in greek which from Aramaic/Hebrew = Cephas which means Rock or Stone

James = comes from Jacob in Hebrew which means Supplanter or holder of the heel. (Gen 3 God curses the serpent, stating He will put enmity between the woman’s seed and the serpent’s seed. The woman’s seed will crush his head, but the serpent will strike his heel)

Supplant = To tak the place of (another), as through force, scheming, strategy, or the like. To replace (one thing) by something else.

John = comes from Yochanan in Hebrew which means Yahweh is gracious.

When you put the meanings of their names together you see a picture on the two mountains

First mountain = Rock supplants God’s Grace, bruises the heel

Second mountain = God’s Glory, the New Covenant who will crush the head of Satan.

Very interesting, Paul--I'm especially struck by the contrast in light and dark between the first and second revelations of God's glory.

The Bible is so consistent and unified!

Interesting Paul!!

I see this as a witness that God has left for these people who study Gematria and Pardes. Through the study of Pardes (Hebrew words, names, Hebrew letters and their shapes), they should see how Christ fulfills Gen. 3:15 by the event of the transformation. How interesting that through their names you see the prophecy of Gen. 3:15 coming through. God doesn't leave anything unturned... so that we have no excuse for believing in Him (Rom.1:20).

Like Colleen, I thought the whole dark and light cloud correlation was really neat.

thx for posting this!
