Revisiting an old topic, the legacy of William Miller

These thoughts being directed more towards those who are still Adventist in thought or practice:

Those who are truly Christians are those who are members of the Body of Christ which is also called; The Church. Biblically, this is also referred to as being born again and joining the Kingdom of God, John chapter three. The seal and evidence of a true Christian is the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, 2 Cor. 1:21-22, 5:5; Eph. 1:13-14, 4:30, who will personally lead each Christian into all truth.

Question One:
Assuming William Miller was a true Christian, why did he preach the return of our Savior Jesus Christ at a certain date in defiance of Scripture, Matt. 24:14; 36-44?

Question Two:
Since God does not and cannot lie, Num. 23:19, why does Ellen G. White base her foundational teachings on something God did not reveal to William Miller?

Question Three:
How can you believe God would hide truth from William Miller by allowing him to believe a lie?

Question Four:
The teachings of William Miller were clearly false and created disharmony within the Body of Christ. Since Christians are expected to be under authority, especially within the Body of Christ, Rom. 13:1-5, why can you not see that the Harmon family, along with Ellen, was ejected from their home church on just grounds?

Question Five:
Dear family and friends who are members of the SDA Church, why can you not see that a denomination build upon a foundation of what is false cannot be the remnant church?

Very good questions, Phil. I pray for truth to become clear.

I recently watch to movie 'God's and Generals' where Stonewall Jackson's cook, a Black man, prays the question; "Why Lord, I need to know?" in reference to why most of his family were still slaves. This prompted my own question.

Excellent questions Phil! They are so important because of their claim that the adventist church is the "remnant" church. I'm going to keep them in case I have the chance to discuss them with some of my family members.

Have you asked any adventist these questions or questions similar to these? What was their response?

Has anybody else had the opportunity to ask these types of questions?

My husband has asked similar questions to my MIL... and she dismisses the questions because she believes that my husband is just "critisizing" the church and that he needs to ask the Holy Spirit to help him understand EGW's writings. She can't defend EGW's writings, but she believes that they are true and that she doesn't need to defend them... that the Holy Spirit will... :-(

Vivian; that is so sad about your MIL. In any cult the followers are convinced that they are in the One True Church and they refuse to investigate it because they are so sure - whether it be Roman Catholicism, Islam, Mormonism, J.Witness, or Adventism. All they have is what the other cults have - a row of "proof" texts, their cult leader(s) or "prophets" and a few "miracles" to add backup. None of them can take the Bible at face value. They all have to have it "interpreted" by their leaders or "prophet." It's so frustrating, yet I was in that place myself only a few years ago. I'm SO GLAD that the Lord delivered me out of it!!! :-)

Vivian,

I am rather deprived of face-to-face Adventist around here. The closest SDA church is a little place in the next town about the size of a latte stand but without the coffee. I am sure they exist but they seem to be an indangered species. The JW and LDS folks are in much more evidence.

Asurprise... I was there also and am SO GLAD to be in a relationship with God where I can have total peace and rest because I can trust in what He's done for me.

Phil ~ LOL!! ... the "size of a latte stand but without the coffee" VERY funny! Reminds me of the time I ordered a quesadilla at taco bell. I didn't want the green sauce so I asked for a "quesadilla without the cheese." The lady was very confused and it took me a little bit to figure out why! haha!

Anyway, most of my closest adventist friends could care less about the history of their church. Why should they... they keep the sabbath and that's what matters. I am in the middle of a discussion with a relative and these are great thought provokers to ask him.

thx!

Phil--that is a GREAT line: "…about the size of a latte stand but without the coffee..." Hahaha!

Sigh--I think it's so funny because of how much energy I spent trying to line myself up with the health message demands...while being unsuccessful at having my tastes agree with the rules. I was a neurotic mess of guilt and self-loathing. It just seemed so wrong: I actually felt better and concentrated better if I drank coffee in the morning...but what agonies of remorse I suffered afterward!

A latte stand without the coffee...quite a metaphor, Phil...

Want me to ship you some up there Phil? We seem to have an over abundance of them around here.

After all, I wouldn't want you to feel left out.

Adventists are endangered up here in Alaska, too :-) my husband went to one service to hear someone he thought he knew, he said the church was 'spiritually dead' and only about 2 dozen people in the entire congregation.

Well River,

If you do uproot them just remember what it says in Matt. 13:24-30;36-43. But it might not be a good idea anyway because it is illegal to transplant noxious weeds in our state.

Talking about overabundance of SDAs in certain cities/regions, it seems like is happening more and more. They are congregating in certain places and those places keep growing and growing, like the Florida Conference, specially the Orlando and Miami areas.

Did not EGW said that "we should not gather large numbers of SDAs in one place?" (paraphrased quote.) Why the disobedience?

I've wondered the same thing, Hec. There's always an excuse or a contradicting quotation to justify their actions.
