I'm working on a Proclamation article on the Great Controversy worldview. I've been quite immersed in it--the main reason I've been scarce here this week.

I just wanted to share a few pretty horrific statements I've discovered.

Notice that this EGW quote equates Christ's character with the law of God and also makes Him our Example and declares that we can be sinless:

quote:

The glory of Christ is his character, and his character is an expression of the law of God. He fulfilled the law in its every specification, and gave to the world in his life a perfect pattern of what it is possible for humanity to attain unto by cooperation with divinity (Signs of the Times, Dec 12, 1875).

This quote gives the law the power to regenerate humans...but regeneration is the work of the indwelling Holy Spirit.

quote:

God’s law is given to men as a hedge, a shield.…To the obedient it is the pledge of eternal life, for it expresses the principles that endure forever. Christ came to demonstrate the value of the divine principles by revealing their power for the regeneration of humanity. He came to teach how these principles are to be developed and applied. (Education, pp 75-77)

Finally, notice that here EGW says the law (not Jesus) is what stands between us and sin:

quote:

In God’s moral government, which is a government based upon a distinction between right and wrong, law is essential to secure right action. God’s law is the expression of His character….to require less from His creatures than obedience to His law would be to abandon them to ruin. To fail to punish transgression of His law would be to place the universe in confusion. The moral law is God’s barrier between the human agent and sin (Signs of the Times, July 31, 1901).

I could go on, but I'm glazing over...

Colleen, somebody sent me a copy of 'The great Controversy'.

It was one of my Adventist acquaintances, I don't remember who, but as soon as I had the book in my hand, I felt like I had just took a snake out of the envelope.

I turned around and tossed the thing into the garbage can and I actually felt like shivering, or I felt that something unclean had entered into my room.

How in the world do you read this stuff? Ain't no wonder you're glazing over.

Not reading it, I can't tell whether the feeling that came over me was real or not, but from what you just said, Yep, it was real.

My advice is take four aspirin and call your doctor in the morning. Tell him I said give you a shot of Morphine. :-)

Colleen, you're right those quotes really sum up the worldview that we adopt when becoming Adventists, whether we've read those quotes or not.

Last night I had an conversation with an adventist. We were discussing 'putting on Christ'. This person said that the way to put on Christ, is to obey the law, because the law is God's character personified, essentially.

So' "the law is God's character personified"???
If that were true then what was God's "character" in the eons of time BEFORE the "law" was given ? God's character is LOVE not a list of rules engraved on stone.

Adventists don't realize that Jesus is the "end of the law." They misunderstand or explain away these verses:

Romans 10:3-4 says: "For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes."

Thank you, everyone. I just can't articulate how difficult this has been. it's hasn't just been the writing; I've felt like I was in one of those bad dreams where I had to run but I couldn't move. I just have had such a hard time getting it done.

I've finished writing and am doing final edits. I am more than grateful for everyone's prayers and ask that you keep praying...we don't have it printed yet!!

Mkfound, yes...Adventists absolutely equate the law with God. I have not fully realized how complete that identity was before working on this article. Adventists have a false god...they make the Law eternal, saying it existed before God spoke it at Sinai...and they say that since it's the transcript of God's character, it was ALWAYS there, and we have to obey it because It's eternal because it's the essence of God.

Essentially Adventism makes the LAW a higher "power" or object of worship than God. In order to demonstrate that we love God, we have to obey the law because that's the essence of God.

That belief is completely inside out. God is holy. He gave the law for a time to a certain people for a specific purpose. It was a revelation of Him--not the 'transcript' of Him. Revelations are not all-encompassing. "Transcripts" are exact replicas.

We were lied to, and we had a false god. It's no wonder, Mkfound, that your Adventist friend said what he/she did. Adventists worship the Law...and think they're worshiping God.

The great controversy limits and diminishes God. Law is more important to them than God, and they would say that even God honors His law. They actually see God as being subject to His law instead of seeing His law as emanating from Him and being a gracious window into reality instead of a definition of Himself.

Colleen,
I am sure this project is highly significant, and I look forward to reading the conclusions. Perhaps this will really get to the root of Adventist error. Some of this stuff needs to be translated into Hungarian! Give me a summary, and I will be up for it!
AB
PS - incidentally, God is really doing an amazing work among the Gypsies here in Hungary right now, and in Slovakia, by the way. It is exciting to see.
And also by the way, I have been invited to teach on cults and apologetics in a Christian camp at the end of July, and I will certain include SDA, among others. God is working, and please pray (as well) - thanks

Will remember you in my prayers. Others need to know what adventism really believes. It has slipped under the radar for to long. Awesome God is with you Doc. He will give you the words to say.

Adrian, that is wonderful news! By all means, translate whatever you like. I'd be thrilled if you translated the GC article when it's finalized!

Thanks Colleen,
I am looking forward to this GC material, as it is an area of Adventism I do not really know much about, but it seems very significant.
By the way, I dare say this has been said before, but if we are looking for a perfect transcript of God's character, then we would have to look at Jesus of Nazareth, would we not?
"The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his being..." (Hebrews 1:3).
A perfect representation of God, who is a living person, could not be anything less than a living person himself, surely?
