I see from reading this article in the Adventist News Network (which was linked from a Christian news website) that Adventist are overjoyed to see that the USDA has altered the traditional food pyramid diagram to eliminate direct reference to meat as a protein source:

So, I clicked on the government website to find out the rest of the story:

Here is what the USDA has to say about protein food sources:

I smile because the USDA focuses our attention on the need to eat more seafood, not the 'vegetarian option'.

There is no problem here unless you focus on what is defined as ‘processed soy products’ which I Googled and came up with this website that has some well documented facts about ‘processed soy products’:

Except for soy products derived through a fermentation process, they all have alarming dangers associated with them.

For more information on this topic:

Google "textured vegetable protein" and you will come up with many 'pro soy' websites.

However, if you Google "textured vegetable protein dangers" you will come up with some very alarming dangers related to the common soy products being promoted as so-called 'health food'. These documented dangers are simply being ignored by those who are advocating a vegetarian diet.

You don't think the Master was onto something when broiled some FISH for His Disciples after a long night fishing. I know Peter could be outspoken at times but I didn't read Peter say, JESUS what's this SEAFOOD?!?! That's not healthy go grill me some asparagus would ya?

It's so interesting. I remember Mary (Helovesme2) saying to me several years ago that she suddenly realized that, by insisting a vegetarian diet was more healthful than one including meat, she was telling God that she knew better than He did what's good for us.

That hit me hard. I'd never even thought of God's giving meat as His actual "highest good" for us on a scarred planet. My SDA worldview had God's giving meat as a "second-best" option He allowed because man had become so rebellious. No--the Bible never says such a thing. After the flood He gave mankind meat to eat and built a fear into the animals...a way to keep humans aware of the "sacrifice of life" necessary to eat, and to keep humans from killing for sheer sport or from developing a cruel "rush" connected with killing. (See Genesis 9.)

God gave meat because He knew it would be good for mankind.

Imagine...!

Colleen & Phil,

Somewhere in my Adventist upbringing I learned or developed the notion that God let man eat meat to shorten his lifespan because of sin. Hence after the flood our lifespans were remarkably shorter compared to before the flood.

Don't know exactly how where or whom inculcated me with that but I picked that notion up.

Probably from the way the Noah story was told - God gave the people 120 years till the flood, then gave them meat to eat after the flood - and the ages shown in the ages recorded in the genealogy lists suddenly declined . . . .

Textured vegetable protein is made from such things as soybeans. The process begins with defatting the soybean meal. That is, the fat is removed from the meal before it is ground into flour and then further processed by being extruded into ‘noodle like’ strands if it intended as a meat replacement.

The defatting process is where there is a significant health issue because this is done through the use of a chemical known as ‘hexane’. Here is an article that discusses hexane and its dangers:

Soy beans are weeds, and i don't like eating weeds.
Did you ever drink milk from a cow that has been into bitter weeds Phil?

I am still vegetarian. I was raised that way and I just can't get used to eating meat. I keep thinking "it's a dead animal".
I drink soy milk because I have lactose intolerance. I do eat some veggie meat, but I don't want to load up on it.
I do know that soy does cause problems for some people who have allergies to it. Also, soy does have some phytoestrogens in it, so maybe it can cause some issues for some people.

I think soy is fine for most people in moderation. Yet eating lots of soy-meat, well, I don't think that's good. There's lots of salt in the canned veggie meat too.

Butterfly_poette,

All I am trying to do is change the focus of what we eat from it being a 'moral issue' to that of what is simply good for us to eat whether it is a vegetable or animal food source. When what we eat is no longer an issue associated with our salvation we become free to choose. We have freedom to make up our own minds and eat healthy without somebody mandating what ‘healthy’ is.

Oh and yes, there are ways to process the soy bean so that it becomes an excellent food source. Become knowledgeable on what is good nutrition and choose for yourself what you eat. You have this freedom and don’t let anyone take it from you.

Try the blue diamond unsweetened almond milk. It is much better than the soy milk :-) also the rice milk made with brown rice. both (to me) have a much better flavor than soy.
I agree what we eat is not a "moral" issue but a CHOICE. We should make choices on what is both good for us and what we personally prefer the taste of.
While I do not think it is in any way wrong for someone to eat shellfish it is something I personally dont care for. The only pork I like is Costco's Kirkland brand pre cooked bacon. I put a few strips between a layer of paper towels zap in microwave for 40 seconds and the paper towels absorb the fat instead of me absorbing it. :-)
Otherwise I use Louis Rich turkey bacon.. but I do not like that kind microwaved.

When I have bacon at home, which is not often, I bake the whole package on a cookie sheet and turn it three times. Each time I turn it I drain off the fat. My bacon ends up having very little fat. Then I put it in a zip-lock bag and heat what I want to eat in the microwave.

If God would have wanted Almonds and rice or soy beans to give milk he would have made it eat grass and given it teats Skeeter. :-)

Since Almonds are nuts, and we ain't squirrels, rice is grass and we ain't horses, soy bean is weeds and we ain't bugs and since the Lord made possums slower than our 4x4's then it just stands to reason that possum is a more healthy food!

I know, I know, the burden falls on me to education yall, and I am trying to bear up under that ree-sponsabilty.

That's the way I think of them also, in fact I prefer them to be dead BEFORE I cook them and eat them.
Can't get my mind around eating a live animal.

I don't want to kill the animal. I will skin it and cook it though. Did I tell you folks about the experience I had in the Civil Air Patrol? I was with them as the girls chaperone one summer in VA for 5 days. They were learning what to eat if they ran out of food. They learned how to catch a rabbit. No one had ever skinned one. The director of the camp knew I had taken anatomy in college and had skinned a cadaver, so he asked me to skin the rabbit. I told him I would if some one else killed it. Once it was dead I skinned it telling the cadets how to do it. I skinned it carefully just like I had done the cadaver 20+ years before. I am surprised I remembered how. So that is my experience.

Animal,

You are one of a kind and protected under provisions of the Endangered Species Act. Just think, you are more important to us than the spotted owl, sea gulls and the American Bald Eagle. Besides, with all that root beer you drink I am thinking you wouldn’t taste a bit like chicken.
