My SDA brother made a comment to me in a conversation that I did not question at the time, but it has bugged me since. He said to me, "Leigh Ann, you KNOW the bible says there will be an end time prophet." Then he went on to say something else(can't remember what) and the conversation never came back to the prophet statement. I am curious...do you guys know what scripture he could be referring to?

I know my rebuttal would be Hebrews 1:1-2:
1:1 In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe.

I was just wondering what scripture he was talking about???

Thanks,
LA

The Promise of the Spirit

28 "It will come about after this That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind; And your sons and daughters will prophesy, Your old men will dream dreams, Your young men will see visions.
29 "Even on the male and female servants I will pour out My Spirit in those days.

The Day of the LORD
30 "I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth, Blood, fire and columns of smoke.
31 "The sun will be turned into darkness And the moon into blood Before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes.
32 "And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the LORD Will be delivered; For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem There will be those who escape, As the LORD has said, Even among the survivors whom the LORD calls. (Joel 2:28-32)

He needs to rethink that singular (Ellen)

Jonvil, Peter said in Acts that the above prophecy was fulfilled at Pentecost.

This is so Adventist. Looking everywhere for truth but the Bible.

Just to be honest, I was guilty of that very crime at one time.

Here are some texts that were written after Pentecost. All of the gifts that God bestows on His people are of no value unless accompanied with His love.

Personally I feel the gift of prophecy is used to edify His people and not just to tell the future.

Rom. 12:6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith.

1Cor. 12:10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.

1Cor. 13:2 If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.

From FB 17

17. The Gift of Prophecy:
One of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is prophecy. This gift is an identifying mark of the remnant church and was manifested in the ministry of Ellen. G. White . As the Lord's messenger, her writings are a continuing and authoritative source of truth which provide for the church comfort, guidance, instruction, and correction. They also make clear that the Bible is the standard by which all teaching and experience must be tested. (Joel 2:28, 29; Acts 2:14-21; Heb. 1:1-3; Rev. 12:17; 19:10.)

LA,

All of the SDA idea about there being "an end times prophet" comes from Revelation 19:10. (Of course the text simply means "The heart of prophecy is all about Jesus".) The other texts Jonvil listed from FB#17 are additional supports, but the main one is Rev.19:10. The prooftexts didn't come first, though.

The phenomenon of EGW came and then later proofs were sought. Her "visions" arrived at a time when the "pioneers" were hurting -- their pride was hurting and they were running hard away from facing the fear of having been dreadfully mistaken. They didn't want to let go of everything they had gained, so to speak. They looked for escape-routes, and EGW's visions came propping up their wounded pride, confirming it and encouraging them to keep going in it. Her visions provided a way out ...a way out from falling at the foot of the Cross, sadly.

Modern day prophets? Of course there are modern day prophets! Real ones and false ones. It takes just as significant of a prooftext-butchering of Scripture to deny that as it does to prove SDA's "end times prophet".

Blessings in His rest!
Ramone

I do believe that there are prophets thru out the church today. I believe that there are many true ones as well as false ones. However, the function of the prophet is what has changed between the OT and the NT. OT prophets received revelation from God to give to the people cuz back then people didn't have direct access to God for themselves. After the cross, we all can come to the throne with boldness and receive directly from God. Prophets in the NT are not like Isaiah, Jeremiah, Elijah and so forth. In the NT I see prophets functioning at local church levels providing encouragement, edification, teaching, wisdom, word of knowledge to people in the local congregation. When you really think about it....SDA's are very much like the Children of Israel at MT Sinai. Israel had Moses and Moses alone receiving revelation from God and then relaying what he received from God to them. They didn't want a personal connection with God. God actually called the entire nation to stand before Him as priests but they refused and had Moses do it instead. SDA's did the same with EGW. God has called all christians to stand before Him and receive directly from Him. But SDA's don't want that....they want a prophet instead. They didn't want to subject themselves to God but rather to another human being and to the writings of a woman.
Down thru time Jesus came and the Jews rejected Him.
Down to our time, the Holy Spirit came (Jesus come in the Spirit) and the SDA's rejected Him.
SDA's in putting themselves under the writings of EGW are essentially rejecting the Holy Spirit and His presence in their lives.

My sister thinks that there was "one end-time prophet".
I don't believe that there should be ONE prophet at the end of time. God can speak to us in some dreams and such, speak to our thoughts. Yet I don't think there will be any more Jeremiahs.

Curious, Butterfly, why don't you think there will be any more Jeremiahs?

Bless you in Jesus!

What fantastic answers! Thank you all for taking your time to answer me. I have a feeling Agapetos hit on the scripture my brother is referring to.

I don't have as much time to be on here as I used to. But this forum is a huge blessing to me. All of you are a huge blessing to me :-)
Thanks again,

I think Adventists are referring to Revelation 19:10 when they say that. They claim this means that there will be an end times prophet, but this is simply saying that the testimonies of ALL the Old Testament prophets pointed to and foretold Jesus!

"Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, "You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God." For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy." Rev. 19:10

SDAs call Ellen White the "spirit of prophecy" and Ellen White herself didn't seem to mind the title. Here's a quote from her:

“In ancient times God spoke to men by the mouth of the prophets and apostles. In these days he speaks to them by the Testimonies of his Spirit. There was never a time when God instructed his people more earnestly than he instructs them now concerning his will, and the course he would have them pursue.”—Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 148.

That sounds a lot like the Bible verse in Hebrews 1:1-2; except that the Bible gives the credit to the Son instead of Ellen White.

"Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. Hebrews 1:1-2

I am not sure if the gift of prophecy is something that will continue to the end of time or ended in the New Testament somewhere.

Was Acts 2 just a fulfillment of Joel 2?
