I'm wondering if any of you know what date that was, that the leaders of the SDA church got together to discuss what to do about Ellen White? (I think that was shortly after her death.) They had found problems with her writings and were wondering whether to let the general church membership know of the problems. They decided to not come clean with the problems regarding her writings because it could possibly cause the SDA church to fall. They had simply invested too much in the religion to let that happen, so they kept in information quiet. Does anyone know more about that? And when it was?

I think it was in the book: Eternity In Their Hearts by Don Richardson, where I read an interesting account about the Mayans. Way back when, in ancient times, some king noticed that the "god" they worshiped - the sun, could easily be blocked by any passing cloud. He reasoned that the sun must not be very powerful if it couldn't even keep a little cloud from passing in front of it's face. He reasoned that there must be a God, bigger than the sun and he reached out to Him. God revealed Himself to the king and then the king called a council of the leaders of his kingdom. They had a discussion and then decided that if they let the common people know that there was a God greater than the sun, the priests would be out of business and lots of revenue would be lost. So they decided to just keep the knowledge to themselves - and not let the common people know.

I believe you are speaking of the 1919 conference.

Asuprise & Ric_b,

If it is the 1919 Bible conference I actually posted the links to the two key transcripts where the SDA Bible School Professors discussed what to do with her. At the time it was President A.G. Daniels presiding.

They knew she was a problem and a liability even way back then.

They sealed the records of that conference for 50 years, so until nearly 1970 that meeting was "unrevealed".

Ric_b that's what I was thinking, but I wasn't sure.

Thanks, Wiredog.

Colleen, did they make the records public knowledge 50 years afterward, or did people need to ask? (And know to ask the right question?)

I read some of the minutes. The best stuff is in the last two days.
