Who exactly is Annas?

Annas is refered to in the bible as a high priest. I read where Annas was given the title of high priest by a Syrian leader but it did not answer the question was he a Pharisee? If he was a Pharasee high priest was he in the hip pocket of the Sanhedrin rulers? Oh! such intrigue. Just off the top of my head, I remember that the high priests in Jesus' day were Sadducees, not Pharisees. They were the rich guys who had the power, but did not believe in life after death. They also come up in John 18:12 ff. The Pharisees were more of a lay movement. Lots of politics going on, nevertheless. That probably doesn't help much :-) Adrian
