I came across this article where it has been voted to move the international dateline and the SDA church in that area is questioning what to do? adventist.org.au/samoa-dateline-change-2011

Imagine the dilemna of the new "sabbath" winding up on Sunday or having to declare a sabbath/day of the week which is out of step with the rest of the nation hmmmm

So funny, in a pathetic sort of way.

Adventists (well, people in general) have lost sight of the fact that Israel lived by a lunar, not a solar calendar. Sabbaths were determined every cycle by the new moon; in other words, every new moon initiated the first of a new month. Sabbath, therefore, was seven days from the new moon...and each month, those Sabbaths would move around. In other words, the seven-day week would start over with every new moon.

Sabbath does not work when we don't live with a Jewish calendar. It's interesting to me that God saw to it that we live in a thoroughly Gentile culture during this time of the Gentiles...even our calendars do not support the OT Sabbath/new moon cycles.

I hear what you are saying, Psalm107v2.

These kinds of questions always make me wonder what "day" is Sabbath on Jupitor or in other galaxies.

SDA's ignore Einstien's General Reletivity---E=Mc2

We were taught so much, since birth, that Ellen's visions wrapped it ALL up!

I often wonder how SDA's, who are scientifically inclined, do the mental gymnastics required with EGW.

Thanking God I was delivered from massive scientific and historical ignorance,

~Cathy~

adventists who are "scientifically inclined"
most probably don't have to do any "mental gymnastics!"

Because~ egw's visions came from God!
Don't you know??? End of story.

Every day I thank God that he delivered me
from adventism!

I just posted this question on FB... but I want to know is this: The government in Samoa is "changing" their "times". Does this shed new light on their view on the prophecy in Daniel 7:25?

Dan 7:25 'He will speak out against the Most High and wear down the saints of the Highest One, and he will intend to make alterations in times and in law; and they will be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time.

... all this time they thought it was about the Roman Catholics! haha!

Question is whether SDAs are going to be loyal to the seven day cycle the believe in, or whether they're going to be loyal to their self-righteous belief that they are the remnant and "Sunday-keepers" are apostate and little harlots. If it is the former, then they will end up going to church on the same day as the evil apostate "Sunday-keepers." If it is the latter, they will move their Sabbath back a day, thus breaking the seven day cycle that they allege has been kept consistently without error since Adam and Eve.

Because their self-proclaimed status as the remnant is so central to their identity, I suspect they will do the latter, and move their Sabbath back a day. If they aren't keeping the "right" day, meaning the day the Sunday-keepers don't keep (even if that "right" day is by construction the wrong day), they have no basis for the existence of their religious group.

Rebellion in the rank and file....

http://www.voxy.co.nz/national/two-sabbaths-samoas-seventh-day-adventists/5/111576

Will be interesting to follow.

Some orthodox Jewish scholars believe anyone keeping a Saturday Sabbath East of Jerusalem and West of the International Dateline are keeping the wrong day anyway. They rather logically determine Sabbath beginning at sundown in Jerusalem, then following around the world. The Israeli Astronaut kept his Sabbath in space by Jerusalem local time.

The issue has been there since Adventists ventured into the South Pacific. It was easier then to bury the problem as communication and travel were slower. A few years ago, The tiny island nation of Kiribati moved the dateline to unify its many small, scattered islands into one calendar day to simplify administration. I can't find the official Adventist decision as Kiribati is small, but a friend of mine who is Catholic but has Adventist relatives there says they continued to worship on the local Saturday after the change. Some began keeping Sunday, but felt that any observance of Sunday was too close to the "beast". But the REAL tension between the two positions comes from looking at the map. The Kiribati line was moved so far to the east that the eastern islands are on on the same longitudinal line as Hawaii. So.. When Hawaiian Adventists are scurrying around working hard getting "ready" for Sabbath, the Adventists in Kiribati are observing theirs and forbidden those activities. At the same exact moment under the same sun.

This same friend also had several relatives drop out of the Adventist church over the timeline change. Maybe highlighting the absurdity of saying one day is more "biblical" than another will shake a few in Samoa to reconsider their beliefs.

I want to point out a quote from one of the papers by SDA Pastor David Hay on an official SDA website regarding this time change (emphasis mine):

quote:

One could be persuaded that determining the day for the Sabbath is made according to the use of the name 'Satuday' on calendars, rather than according to the biblical principle of the seventh day as it relates to its position in lines of longitude emanating form the Prime Meridian at Greenwich.

First off, there is no Biblical principle regarding the Prime Meridian in Greenwich. The Bible doesn't even mention either a Prime Meridian, or Greenwich, England. This is so outside the thinking of the original audience as to be laughable. The Israelites only knew Saturday as determined by their local frame of reference in the Middle East. They never had to deal with radical changes in sunrise and sunset caused by rapid travel across large expanses of the globe. The very idea of longitude was probably foreign to them, as they probably didn't even know the world was round in the first place.

Second, by stating that the man-made Prime Meridian, first devised in 1851, can be part of a "biblical principle" is to say that humans have authority to determine when the seventh-day, or any other day of the week, is. There is an infinity of other meridians bi-secting the earth that humanity could have chose. By arbitrarily choosing the imaginary line through Greenwich, England (a place not only not mentioned in the Bible, but which the Biblical authors probably didn't even know existed), we have admitted an authority to say that it is Saturday and thus the seventh-day of the week everywhere east of what we have arbitrarily called the 180 degree meridian, and Sunday (the sixth day) west of it. This SDA pastor is saying humanity has the liberty to arbitrarily call one day the seventh and the other the first. This utterly destroy's SDAism's end-times scenario where sabbatarians are persecuted because someone else arbitrarily determined Sunday is the seventh-day (a claim they have made against the Pope).
