Ross, You put together some nice, easy to follow advice for doing Bible study. I know that you understand this, but I'm not sure if it was clear in your blog. There is an important difference between speculation and induction. As an example, one of the good questions that you suggested people should ask about the passage is "why". The important thing in doing inductive Bible study is that we only answer with what Scripture actually tells us about "why". If Scripture says something, but doesn't tell us why we open a can of worms when we take our best guess at why. We may have wonderful and creative speculations, but that is not inductive reasoning. In fact, it is more consistent with the deductive reasoning where we develop a hypotheses and then test that hypothesis to see if it is true. But pure speculation is even worse that deductive reasoning in that unbiased deductive reasoning allows for the initial idea to be rejected due to a lack of supporting evidence. An untested speculation can become "fact" without any support. | ||

Hmmm perhaps I need to add a little disclaimer that each of the questions needs to be addressed from the perspective of the understanding that the Holy Spirit has revealed from the passage. It's not an airy fairy why but is grounded within the passage. A disclaimer has been added in bold italics before the questions section. (Message edited by RossBondReturns on January 11, 2012) |
