I've got a praise report and a prayer request:

I've gotten called back for two interviews for PA school. One is Monday and the other is in December. Firstly, praise God for getting me this far. My prayer request is that the interviews go well and that I get accepted to one of the schools, if it is God's will. Any prayer on my behalf is appreciated.

Rain, what good news!

Praying now that He will direct and that you will be accepted, if it's His will, into whichever school He knows would be better for you.

Y'all may have seen that I've been accepted to PA school in the Answers to Prayers thread. I am extremely excited about this and thank God so very much for this opportunity.

I wanted to ask for prayer due to my home situation. To put things plainly, my father is verbally abusive both toward my mother and toward me, though not as often toward me. Ever since leaving an abusive relationship in 2011, I have made a point to not take being talked to in a way to insinuates that I am stupid or that purposely degrades me and undercuts my self-esteem. I believe that my father has found this increasingly frustrating since every time I point out when he speaks to me like this, he gets very angry. I have given up on defending my mother since we would be constantly arguing then due to the fact that he constantly belittles her.

Last night we got into it again. He said something that insinuated I was stupid, I let him know, and he blew up. Last night I found out that I am, apparently, inconsiderate, have been causing all sorts of problems, and was threatened with bodily harm. And all my mom had to say was that because the salsa bottled exploded on him and some electronics earlier he was already in a bad mood. That is no excuse.

I am not inconsiderate. I am provided for while I'm trying to get an education, but should I stay silent about abuse and dysfunction in exchange for support? I am silent most of the time. I only speak up when the battle heads in my direction.

I realize I'm ranting, but I basically have no friends down here and no spiritual support group except you guys. I just would appreciate prayers for protection and guidance. I am so close to going to PA school and, after that, I'll leave for good. I don't want anything to screw up my chance to go to PA school.

A part of me just wants to egg it on and just point out what a miserable person he is at every opportunity. I'd also love to very visibly go to church on Sunday. I found a church I like but haven't been attending for fear of my father finding out and kicking me out or something. I'm wondering if I should just get it over with and come out of my Former closet. Again, though, I'd like to be stable when I head into PA school.

Prayers would be appreciated.

Praying for you. You can turn your father in to the police for yourself and be willing to press charges. You cannot do that for your Mom.
Is there anywhere else you can live to get out of there?

Rain, I will pray. This situation is not a surprise to God. Eventually, when we trust the Lord Jesus, He moves us to make our actions match our convictions. He does ask us to be honest about our beliefs and our loyalty to Him.

Your stability as you head into PA school will not come from your family. God is the One who will cover you. He already knows how you will finance it, and His intention for you is that you grow in faith and trust and in dependence upon Him as His Spirit makes His word real in your life. Ultimately He asks us to trust Him alone. He asks us to walk off that invisible cliff and allow Him to catch us and hold us. He does not show us in advance how He will do it, but when we trust Him, He provides for us.

Read Mathew 6:25-34. Those words are the Lord Jesus' words to you right now. He is faithful.

We can't keep a foot in both camps and expect to grow in faith and trust. We can't have integrity if we believe one thing but publicly appear to cooperate with another. Truth sets us free, and if the Son sets us free, we are free indeed.

Jesus frees us with His truth...and He asks us to honor and trust Him by acting on His truth. Be true to Jesus, even if it means offending people you love. He knows how to protect and provide for you. Your witness for Jesus is far more powerful to your family if you are living with integrity in your own life.

With prayers,
Colleen

Rain; I'm praying for you too...

That abuse sure infuriates me! It always infuriates me when I hear about abuse happening! (I hope he gets saved though.) I wonder if someone with abusive tendencies gets worse when they're in a cult. What I mean is, if the abusive person is trying to be good in order to obtain Heaven, perhaps they look good in one area - such as acting all serene, etc. when they're acting in the church's capacity as an elder, for example; while their evil tendencies just explode out in another direction. Then they justify their evil to themselves: i.e. "they provoked me" or "I'm not as bad as so-and-so." Of course that's NOT an excuse - I'm just kind of disecting the behavior of an unsaved person.

Flyinglady: I don't feel that I'm in immediate danger. It was more of an escalation thing in the middle of a confrontation: I wouldn't back down after each little increment of escalation on his part, so maybe threatening to hit me would calm me down. I'd already walked out of the room when he said that, so I didn't really say anything back.

Up until now it's just been some really bad arguments interspersed with the normal verbal abuse here and there. Believe me, though, if anybody ever lays a hand on me I am calling the cops. I made the mistake of letting my former boyfriend get away with assault and really regret it. Ain't happening again.

Everything seem to be back in the ol' swing of things, not that they're entirely normal. I'm just going to lay low until I go to school. I may just opt to go to school out of town. I've already been accepted to a PA school nine hours away.

Colleen: your words mean a lot to me, really. I rely on myself too much and worry a lot. I'd never considered where my stability really should come from and that God already knew that the tension in my household would rise, not to mention where my financial security will come from for school. With that said, let's see what happens if I go to church this Sunday, whatcha say?

Asurprise: I honestly do think that being in a cult cultivates abusive tendencies, but this is just from my limited experience with my family. My Dad's side of the family is all kinds of jacked up. I can honestly say there isn't one well-balanced person and not a single healthy relationship that I've seen and they're all SDA.

Thank you for the prayers, guys. Really. It means a lot to me.

Prayer for my brother, Doug. I listed details of his surgery scheduled for 12/18/12 under the thread "My Brother". He has cancer, and he and his wife are really struggling.
