What a day. Richard's mom went into the hospital last Thursday (actually, I took her to emergency last Thursday evening; she wasn't admitted until the following day around noon...) with a bad case of the flu. She'd had a fever over 101 for four days, (and wouldn't take anything to bring it down or see a doctor because it wasn't "natural"--drugs are to be avoided...), and finally on Thursday her fever spike to 102.4, she fainted, fell, and gashed her head. At that point I took her to emergency.

During the night last night she became worse. Her fever is gone, but her cardiac function dropped to 20% (down from an admitting function of 60% which is considered normal); she developed trouble breathing, and by mid morning she was diagnosed with myocarditis and an unspecified infection (her white count jumped from 5 to 20 since yesterday AM).

At this point she is on a ventilator in CCU, is being cultured and tested to try to discover the locus of her infection and is being given drugs to try to stimulate her heart muscle. She's heavily sedated because of the ventilator. The myocarditis (a condition where the heart muscle is attacked by some organism or other insult and is greatly weakened) seems to be related to the flu; she had a similar bout in 1997 following an attack of flu, and the doctor gave her, at that time, a 30% chance of survival.

She is worse this time; previously she breathed on her own.

The outlook is grim, but the cardiologist is taking a "wait and see what supportive care will do" attitude. There is no "cure" for myocarditis. Sometimes it spontaneously reverses itself with drugs and rest. Sometimes it does not.

Here's the worst part. She needs Jesus. She is a historic Adventist, very rigid, VERY bitter. Her anger at our leaving is intense and uresolved, and Richard suspects she is angry at God in general because she has been SO CAREFUL to eat right, keep the commandments, observe Ellen's instructions, keep the Sabbath...you know all the things. And now her life has spun out of control; she can't reign us in, and in spite of her careful eating, she's critically ill.

I'm asking for prayer for her--for healing if it's part of God's plan,of course, but most importantly for her to surrender herself to Jesus and His grace and forgiveness. I think she has never really faced the fact that she is truly a sinner in need of grace. She has lived in so much unhappiness; she needs the Lord.

Thanks to all of you!

Colleen

Colleen, I will keep your m-i-l in my prayers. Especially for her to get a 'heart transplant' if you know what I mean. Melinda, I have t.s as does two of my children. We partysipated in the Yale study that isolated the t.s. gene. I got a wonderful letter from Yale thanking me for assisting their scientists with that research. Are you involved in the TSA? It's a great organization. Lots of resources as well conpanionship with people who are in similiar circumstances. Every two years they have a wonderful conference. I have been to several. They are great!

Colleen, Since I am new to this site, I had not checked out this prayer section. What a great idea! I will be praying for Richard's mother, that as Susan just said that she get a true heart transplant, and for her myocarditis. I see a fair amount of these cases and some can do OK, once the acute infection subsides. But I have seen a few cases where the E.F. gets down to 20%, and then later improve significantly, but she sounds pretty sick. And to all the other prayer requests on this site, I have noted them, and will be praying for all of you. Also, I would like your prayers for my wife Marti, who is recovering from a stroke since last Oct '04, and God has blessed her and brought her back a long way, but she still needs to have her vision restored enough to drive. She and I will be heading for a vacation next week, which will be very relaxing. Its really comforting to know that ther is a band of prayer warriors, and we can all pray for each other. God Bless, Stan

So many burdens to take before the Lord as I catch up on this thread...

Father, I lift to you the needs of my brothers and sisters in Christ. For healing, Father, where you gain glory. For comfort, Lord, where you alone can minister. For stability and calmness for caregivers and family members who can only watch in pain those they love. Father, we are so blessed by your grace, and for that we are so thankful. I pray for our children, Father, that you would help them be all they can be to your glory. And Father, I pray especially that we remember how powerful our words are to those we have grown to love in cyberspace ... those we know reading, and those only you see. Help us to be the witnesses and beacons for you that brings honor and glory to your name.

I am so thankful for this site. For the safe haven and refuge I find here when I feel so alone in the journey. I pray that those who still have loved ones in adventism will find the true source of rest. I pray for those facing death, Lord. I pray for their salvation where applicable. I pray for their peace in the days ahead that your will would be done in their lives. I pray for babies, Lord...the born, and the yet to be born. I pray for their parents and grandparents that you would give them the strength to face whatever lies on the horizon. Thank you, Lord, that we don't carry these burdens alone.

I pray a special prayer for Richard and Colleen as they are on the frontlines of a very real spiritual battle. Protect their home, their children and their marriage. Keep them in unity with each other as they face the struggles that bring raw emotions. Thank you for giving them the vision to start this site ... and the ministry it is to those of us who use it.

I thank you for the encouragers among us ... those who remind us how awesome God is and remind us to look for the hope ahead.

There are so many new people here who are in different phases of transition. Father, bring them comfort as you reveal the truth in your word alone.

At this time of remembering the resurrection and what you have done for us, I am so thankful with all the blessings you have given me. I am thankful to be your child.

Guide our words and guard our hearts from the deception that lies around us. Thank you so much that you are already working in each of these situations. Help us embrace your response and answer, however it may lead.

Thank you for the cross, Lord. For the empty tomb. We love you....

I will be praying for your M-I-L Colleen. That He will give you and Richard the right words when you are with her, that her heart will be broken, and Jesus will flood into the places she's baracaded from Him. That she will be filled with His peace, and finally KNOW Him!

Stan, I'm also praying for the continued healing of your wife. Have a wonderful trip!

Stan, I'm also praying for your wife. Have a great trip!

Thanks for your prayers for Richard's mom; her condition is essentially unchanged, and for reasons they do not seem to understand, she's not able to breathe without a respirator--at least not yet. They've taken her off the sedation--leaving just a small amount of morphine drip to manage the pain of the ventilator--to see if she can rouse enough to begin breathing. She's slightly more responsive, but her eyes don't track anything.

Only God knows what the Holy Spirit might be doing in some place inside her where we can't observe. I just pray she will surrender and really know Him.

Colleen, I am adding my petition to others on this site. I'm praying for comfort for you and your family as you live through this uncertain period of time. I pray that your mother-in-law will truly surrender to Jesus and accept his healing of soul.

Love and blessings, also to you Stan, and your wife, as you seek some relaxation from your normal busy life.

I'm praying for all of the Formers, for SDA's locked in the embrace of that ideology, and for the formers who are wandering now without a shepherd. We all need to know Jesus and Rest in Him.

Colleen/Richard and Stan,
I have added your requests about your MIL, Colleen, and your wife, Marti, Stan, to my prayer list.
Father in Heaven, You are the I AM, the Alpha and Omega, the Great Physician and I come to you with these sick people. You know best what they need. Colleen's MIL needs a spiritual heart transplant and only you can do that one. Marti is still having visual problems and again, it is something that only you can do.
Keep these folks and their families in your awesome hands and may they know that You are holding them at this time.
We love you God and thank you for Jesus.
You are awesome.

I don't get to this Forum every day - so I'm a bit behind here.

Colleen, I've added your M-I-L to my prayer book. I will especially be praying for her to have peace in knowing Jesus Grace and accepting that gift, to realize it isn't her works but HIS that save her.

Stan, I added your wife Marti to my prayer book, also. I'm praying that she recovers fully if it is God's will, knowing that this life is only temporary and she will be made new when she meets Jesus.

I meet with a group from my Church every Thrusday night. We study together and then spend about an hour in prayer for all those we have listed in our prayer books. We also note all the answered prayers. It is so amazing to see all the ways these prayers are being answered. It is easy to forget to look back, but it is such a blessing, and a confirmation that we serve an awesome God!

Jeannette, thanks for continuing to pray for Rachel. Though the school has hired an outside consulting firm to help set up behavior expectatons for Rachel, essentially, nothing has really changed. The teacher doesn't want Rachel in her class and seems determined to undermine any efforts to stabilize the situation. (and I love this outside firm's recommendations) The school was supposed to develop a crisis plan for Rachel when she has an extreme behavior, but 4 weeks later, there is nothing. Rachel's foster parents are going to look into another school for next year and see if that would be a possibility. We just feel we have lost a whole year with Rachel. But it is absolutely precious to see Jonathan light up when she comes home. She came in last weekend, and he just jumped on her to give her a hug. She really doesn't know how to react to that. But it warms a momma's heart to see the love between her kids. On another positive note, Rachel has learned to peddle a stationary bike. Since I love riding bikes, I see that as a positive i never thought I would see. Apparently their PE program has stationary bikes and she "goes to town" peddling. It continually amazes me that God knows the details and handles them. I guess I'll start looking for a tandem bike so we can ride together again. (it's been some times since I've been able to balance her on a hitchhiker attached to my bike) I'm sure God has one out there somewhere.... I have to laugh at myself as he continually drops things into my lap that I need/want. Though there remain tough times, I feel like I'm in a shower of blessing right now...in spite of it all. It truly is a peace that passes all understanding.

Melissa,

Thanks for sharing your update re: Rachel. She clearly does need a different teacher/school environment. How exciting that she can peddle!

I'll also be praying for God to provide the right placement/people in Rachel's life.

Melissa,
That is fantastic that Rachel can peddle a stationary bike. I can tell it really warms your heart. I will continue to pray for you and her for a new school. God has one somewhere and He will lead you to it.
Our God is awesome.

Melissa,
I am so happy for you. I recently read in my Bible a verse that said that God is interested in every detail of our lives. I'm sure He is smiling right now over this big accomplishment of Rachel's.
