Bruce:

The quotation from Ignatius is from c.107 AD. Ignatius was martyred sometime between 107 and 117 AD., which is an indication that by the time of Ignatius early in the second century, the practice of worshipping on Sunday was very much generalised. There are other quotations from pseudo-Barnabas c.70-79 AD (chapter 15) and the Shepherd of Hermas which are from late in the first century. They are evidence of an early practice of Sunday worship in the early Gentile Christian community.

Blessings,

Ernie

Bruce:

I'm sorry for not noticing your second quotation. I think is not from Eusebius but from Justin Martyr (First Apology or his Dialogue with Trypho), and was written sometime before the year 165 AD when he was killed. I have the information in my office, I'll check it and will respond as soon as possible.

Very interesting reading. Thanks Bruce and Ernie for your responses. But what about the the claim that the Pope changed the Sabbath to Sunday? How valid are these claims the SDA's use? I know several people that are devout Catholic watchers, you know the "know your enemy" mentality. Anyway I want to find out more about this specific claim because if the Adventist's did not have this claim they would not really have a case.
It is so sad that so many people that leave the church end up leaving God also, there is such an identity crisis. When you figure out you are no longer an Adventist it is not easy to just merge in elsewhere, since there is nothing like it to merge into.
I am not sure what the answer is, I keep praying that the Lord will lead me to know his will. I guess I am not ready or willing to go to church on Sunday yet or ever, possibly. I don't feel like I fit in anywhere!
Ernie-Maybe you answered me elsewhere on the forum and I have not seen it yet. Where are you having the sda outreach seminars?

Cas, Here's a few verses for you to consider.
One man esteemeth one day above another: another esteemeth every day alike. Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind. He that regardeth the day, regardeth it unto the Lord; and he that regardeth not the day, to the Lord he doth not regard it. He that eateth, eateth to the Lord, for he giveth God thanks; and he that eateth not, to the Lord he eateth not, and giveth God thanks. Rom 14:5-6
Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days: Col 2:16
Also, here's a question for you: If the whole purpose of all those SDA seminars & crusades is to convince people that the Catholic church has lied about everything, why suddenly believe they have the truth regarding the Sabbath? Just because they make the claim, does that make it so?

To my knowledge the apostles didn,t change Sabbath to Sunday. Is there watertight proof that early church changed it either? Even if the early church changed it, it does not necessary mean that the Bible gives us right to change days.

Does anyone know where I can get a copy of "From Sabbath to Lord's Day" edited by D. A. Carson? I tried to order it from Amazon.com a few months back, but it is out of print. Many people who write about the Sabbath from all points of view quote from the book, including Bachiochi, Ratzlaff, and Ford.

If you don't want to post, write to the webmaster and he can find me. ;)
