J the O and everyone:

The problem with lifting up the sheets and trying to examine the sex life of someone long since passed away, is there is no point to it, and only damage can result.

We can prove she was a literary thief.

We can prove she routinely ate unclean foods, and requested others to acquire such foods be brought to her.

We can prove the Church knows the truth about the lies, and is engaged in a massive cover-up to protect her image.

We can prove many things, but we should not engage in arguments that cannot be proven, and because we cannot prove these things, we weaken the things we can prove when we push such.

Gary,

The charge, "Ellen G. White was a homosexual" is far-fetched in the extreme and impossible to prove. You are quite right about that one.

But the other charge, "Ellen G. White gave psychologically damaging advice in her published writings on the sexual development of children," is not far-fetched at all and much easier to prove, especially to psychologists, psychiatrists, sociologists, and medical historians such as Dr. Ronald L. Numbers.

Furthermore, the homosexual charge carries very little meaning, if any, for those living today who depend for moral guidance on her writings. This is especially so, since the only relevant letter is highly questionable and is accompanied by no corroborating evidence.

The same cannot be said for the charge that she massively wrote psychologically unhealthy and damaging messages, especially to parents, regarding the sexual development of their children.

This is an enormous problem in the SDA church today which will not go away. Thousands, if not tens or even hundreds of thousands, of the lives of the children of "true believers" may have been permanently damaged. It is a problem which must be dealt with and which is being dealt with, regardless of what we do here on this website.

Iíve read a few of your posts that an acquaintance has shown me with some interest. This of course is not my real name and since I donít type or write to well (though I would like to) my acquaintance will write and post only with my approval.

I am a former SDA. If I were to write a book it would be, formeradventist.com-pletelymiserable. Being quite young when my parents become SDAs, I accepted it with great childish joy. As a few years went by things changed. We got deeper and deeper into adventism and more and more legalistic. My parents of course, with true sincerity, followed EGW to the letter of ěHER LAWî. Iím not sure how I got caught but I was caught in ěThe unmentionable ëSECRETí sinî. I was tied every night for months with my hands behind me. My siblings were present to witness this too. Later, I went to four different boarding academies and was kicked out one. The things that went on there were unbelievable. You who also went know that. I was finally emancipated as a junior and went into the Army were I found a real world. I lived in guilt for years. I got married in my mid 20s to a Catholic but that of course was THE ěmark of the beastî. I lived in such daily fear of hell that I finally became a SDA again. I and my wife were baptized. We went to church for about a year. After hearing virtually ěNO BIBLEî and 99% EGW all this time and nothing was ěSo simple that a child could understand itî we left. I so sincerely wanted a relationship with God and I gave him every chance for 40 years to so.

I feel most of you people are sincere yet so deluded. Where is your God. Iíve yet to see him. He hasnít done a thing for me. I know Iím going to HELL so what the hell is the point? I have nothing but depression and misery and Iíll be ****** if Iíll open myself up for a lethal dose of Bible thumping. I just wanted everyone to know just how treacherously miserable this writers life has been thanks in great part to EGW and the legalism SDAism promotes.

Over half my life and particularly the last 10 years, Iíve been suicidal and extremely depressed. I just started an anger support group and learned for the first time just how angry I am. Depression is: ěstuffedî anger. Where did this come from? Why am I so angry? What am I so angry about. Now I say to myself, where has my life gone? What a waste Iíve been. I had such promise, so many dreams, so many abilities to develop all GONE, gone, gone for what.?

Allenette, Colleen, Gary, Lydell, Lynn, Maryann, Plain Patti, Susan, Timo, and anybody else who has contributed to this discussion:

I'm quoting a paragraph from PROPHETESS OF HEALTH: ELLEN G. WHITE (New York: Harper and Row, 1976) by Dr. Ronald L. Numbers.

"Following the spate of sex-oriented testimonies in 1869 and 1870, some of which she published with the guilty identified by name [!], Ellen White wrote surprisingly little on the subject for the rest of her life. Her volume on CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE, compiled in 1890 largely from her previously published writings, did include a chapter on 'Social Purity,' but the FAMILIAR TOPICS [emphasis mine] of masturbation and marital excess were notably absent [I wonder why] from THE MINISTRY OF HEALING (1905), her last major work on health. In the meantime, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg [her mentor in matters of sexual health and morals] KEPT ADVENTISTS SEXUALLY INFORMED [emphasis mine] with his best-selling editions of PLAIN FACTS ABOUT SEXUAL LIFE, a somewhat sadistic manual originally written in fourteen days that recommended such measures as FREQUENT NIGHTTIME RAIDS AND CIRCUMCISION WITHOUT ANESTHESIA [emphasis mine] to put an end to masturbation." Pages 158,159.

Here is Numbers' endnote to that excerpt:

"EGW, TESTIMONY RELATIVE TO MARRIAGE DUTIES, AND EXTREMES IN THE HEALTH REFORM (Battle Creek: SDA publishing Assn., 1869); EGW, CHRISTIAN TEMPERANCE, pp. 127-40. J. H. Kellogg, PLAIN FACTS ABOUT SEXUAL LIFE (2nd ed.; Battle Creek: Good Health Publishing Co., 1879), pp. 336-37, 375-76; Richard W. Schwarz, 'John Harvey Kellogg: American Health Reformer' (Ph.D. diss., University of Michigan, 1964), p. 233. It should be pointed out that drastic solutions to the problem of masturbation were not unusual; see Engelhardt, 'The Disease of Masturbation,' pp. 243-45; and John Duffy, 'Masturbation and **Clitoridectomy: A Nineteenth-Century View, JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION, CLXXXVI (October 19, 1963), 246-48."

**That's surgical removal of the clitorus, by the way. Now tell me there was not a serious preoccupation with sex resulting in life-long damage to the normal sexual development of human beings in the Victorian age, involving the published works of Ellen G. White and her mentor Dr. John Harvey Kellogg! And that while much of the rest of the world emerged from this unbelievable ignorance and supersition, Adventists in North America did not, by and large, due almost solely to the influence of EGW and to a much lesser extent JHK!

Hey George! Pleased to meet you, I am so happy you came here to chat with us. You are not alone, in your anger and depression. We all feel it to some degree, when we learn the truth. If you want to see how other former Church members handeled their anger, check out this web site.

I could pen more to you, but reading long posts, even if they are well meaning, are going to just tire you even more. Bless you!

J the O:

I agree she dammaged us in many ways, and her insistance against normal learning in many areas of peoples lives is quite clear. Just look at the pain Gorge is caught in now. I would like to be at the foot of her grave on judgement day so I could poke her in the nose! I wish I was kidding. When I read letters like the one from George, I get worked up. I love you, George. Check out that web site, and have a good laugh.
