Dear Adventist Friend: IF YOU WEAR A WOOL-LINEN SWEATER, YOUíRE GUILTY OF ADULTERY

The evidence is found in two Bible texts, one from the New Testament and one from the Old.

NT James 2:10-11 NIV: Whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. For he who said, ìDo not commit adultery,î also said, ìDo not murder.î If you do not commit adultery but do commit murder, you have become a lawbreaker.î

OT Deuteronomy 22:11 NIV: Do not wear clothes of wool and linen woven together.

Now if you argue that the wool-linen prohibition was not one of the Ten Commandments you will be correct. But if you argue that it is not as much a part of the Law of Moses as the adultery prohibition, you will be mistaken. For two reasons:

1. Nowhere in the Bible ñ Old Testament or New ñ is there the slightest hint that all 613 Old Testament laws are not all a part of ìthe lawî as used in both Testaments.

2. The Jewish rabbis of today make it absolutely clear that this is indeed the case. The eminent Rabbi Joseph Telushkin says in BIBLICAL LITERACY (New York: William Morrow, 1997), page 513 that it is undisputed ìJewish teaching that the Torah [Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy] enumerates 613 commandmentsî as ìrecorded in the Talmud,î a highly authoritative Jewish commentary on the Old Testament.

This very linen-wool prohibition is, in fact, law number 551. Itís also known as the law of shatnez and Orthodox Jews follow it to the letter to this very day.

Ergo, you have NO EXCUSE before God, you who claim that the Old Testament STATEMENT of the law of God has not been replaced by the New Testament STATEMENT of the law of God in the Person (acts and sayings) of Jesus. For if you offend in one point of the law, you are guilty of breaking every last one of the commandments, including that prohibiting adultery.

Think otherwise?

Let me know.

Waiting patiently,

Jude
