Richard just showed me an article buried in the middle of the National section of our local paper. It briefly and superficially says that more than 1,000 religious leaders met today at the United Nations for a World Peace Summit. The goals of the meetings are to arrive at resolutions on "peace, poverty and the environment, as well as the formation of a permanent council of religious leaders to advise the United Nations on preventing and settling disputes." The article does not say who is invited, but it does name a few participants: Eritrean Bishop Zekaria Yohannes, a Muslim professor from Malaysia, "barefoot monks" and "white-robed swamis", Inca Indians, and a seven member delegation from China. A group was planning to protest because the Dahli Lama was not invited to the first two days because he offended the Chinese. Does the above look sparse on Christian representatives? What exactly is a permanent council of world relgious leaders with an agenda of addressing peace, poverty, and the environment going to advise the U.N. to do? It's all so interesting.
