^^You say again, "They are not educated in
regard to the injurious effects of MEAT eating
and of using SUGAR and VINEGAR, TEA and
COFFEE. That is, they depend for their herb
drink on tea from China and coffee from Java.
These things are INJURIOUS and
DELETERIOUS to the human system. Tea
and coffee are stimulants and POISONS, and
their effects have been presented before
them."^^

EGW: DESSERT SHOULD NOT BE MADE

"As to the many dishes for DESSERT for
which we have recipes, I have no light in
regard to them except that they should not be
made. We want decided reforms among
reformers. We feel the necessity of this matter
most deeply. But I am not as well as usual...."

EGW: NO THANKSGIVING TURKEY!

"Those who digress occasionally to gratify the
taste in eating a fattened turkey or other flesh
meats, pervert their appetites.... They are
controlled by taste, not by principle."

"CAKES, sweet PUDDINGS, PASTRIES,
JELLIES, JAMS, are active causes of
indigestion. Especially harmful are the
CUSTARDS and puddings in which milk,
eggs, and sugar are the chief ingredients. The
free use of MILK AND SUGAR TAKEN
TOGETHER [icecream?] should be avoided."

Diseases of every stripe and type have been brought upon human beings by the use of TEA AND COFFEE AND THE NARCOTICS, OPIUM, AND TOBACCO. These hurtful indulgences must be given up, NOT ONLY ONE, BUT ALL; for ALL are hurtful, and ruinous to the PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND MORAL POWERS, and should be discontinued from a health standpoint. THE COMMON USE OF THE FLESH OF DEAD ANIMALS HAS HAD A DETERIORATING INFLUENCE UPON THE MORALS AS WELL AS THE PHYSICAL CONSTITUTION.
Ill health in a variety of forms, if effect could be traced to the cause, WOULD REVEAL THE SURE RESULT OF FLESH EATING.

The Creator of man has arranged the living machinery of our bodies. Every function is wonderfully and wisely made. AND GOD PLEDGED HIMSELF TO KEEP THIS HUMAN MACHINERY IN HEALTHFUL ACTION IF THE HUMAN AGENT WILL OBEY HIS LAWS AND COOPERATE WITH GOD. EVERY LAW GOVERNING THE HUMAN MACHINERY IS TO BE CONSIDERED JUST AS TRULY DIVINE IN ORIGIN, IN CHARACTER, AND IN IMPORTANCE AS THE WORD OF GOD. Every careless, inattentive action, any abuse put upon the Lord's wonderful mechanism, by disregarding His SPECIFIED LAWS IN THE HUMAN HABITATION, IS A VIOLATION OF GOD'S LAW.

EGW: MEAT, BUTTER, CHEESE, SPICES
MAKE PERFECTION IMPOSSIBLE

"It is IMPOSSIBLE for those who give the reins
to appetite to attain to Christian perfection. ...
Many a mother sets a table that is a snare to
her family. Flesh MEATS, BUTTER, CHEESE,
rich PASTRY, SPICED foods, and
CONDIMENTS are freely partaken of by both
old and young."

It has been clearly presented to me that GOD'S PEOPLE ARE TO TAKE A FIRM STAND AGAINST MEAT EATING. Would God for THIRTY YEARS GIVE HIS PEOPLE THE MESSAGE THAT IF THEY DESIRE TO HAVE PURE BLOOD AND CLEAR MINDS, THEY MUST GIVE UP THE USE OF FLESH MEAT, IF HE DID NOT WANT THEM TO HEED THIS MESSAGE? By the use of flesh meat, THE ANIMAL NATURE IS STRENGTHENED AND THE SPIRITUAL NATURE WEAKENED. Such men as you, who are engaged in the MOST SOLEMN AND IMPORTANT WORK EVER INTRUSTED TO HUMAN BEINGS, need to give special heed to what they eat.
Remember that when you EAT FLESH MEAT, YOU ARE BUT EATING GRAINS AND VEGETABLES SECONDHAND; for the animal receives from these things the nutrition that makes it grow and prepares it for market. The life that was in the grains and vegetables passes into the animal, and becomes part of its life, and then human beings eat the animal. WHY ARE THEY SO WILLING TO EAT THEIR FOOD SECONDHAND?...
THE THOUGHT OF KILLING ANIMALS TO BE EATEN IS IN ITSELF REVOLTING. IF MAN'S NATURAL SENSE HAD NOT BEEN PERVERTED BY THE INDULGENCE OF APPETITE, HUMAN BEINGS WOULD NOT THINK OF EATING THE FLESH OF ANIMALS.

EGW: "THE THOUGHT OF KILLING ANIMALS
TO BE EATEN IS IN ITSELF REVOLTING"

If this is so, then what about the killing of
animals to be WORN as in leather boots,
shoes, belts, jackets, hats, gloves, etc?

Or CARRIED as in purses, wallets,
briefcases, etc?

Or RESTED ON as in leather couches,
lazyboys, footstools, etc?

Or UTILIZED in other ways as in leather buggy
whips?

When Ellen White rode in train coaches cross
continent, why didn't she just REFUSE to sit
upon the well tanned animal hide even as she
refused to ingest the well done animal flesh?

Or maybe she did ingest the meat as well as
sit upon the seat.....

Does anyone know? Any historians out there
lurking? Ron Graybill? Ron Numbers?

Question: Did Ellen White ever fully and finally
give up eating the flesh of dead animals?
Oysters? Chicken? Will we ever know for
sure?

Max of the Cross

Ps: Anyone out there have any ideas of how
the remains of dead animals are utilized in
our society by vegans and other vegetarians?
Antler-handled eating utensils? Coffee -- er,
POSTUM -- tables whose tops are inlaid with
mother-of-pearl?

Max,
I did read somewhere, in egws own writing that a Catholic woman pointed out to egw the horror of eating meat. I'll try to find that again. Infact, according to sister ellen, this is when she herself decided not to eat meat. Something to that effect. Again, I will try to find that to be sure and put her own words here.
God Bless,
Denise

Looking forward to it, Denise. Meanwhile I'll be
back in a bit with more from EGW on the use
of dead animals in her day and ours.

EGW: EAT POULTRY, DIE WITH FLESH
BETWEEN TEETH

"When they [the ancients] murmured against
their heaven-appointed food [bread of heaven
or mana] and asked for flesh, God sent them
quails; but the consequence of their rebellion
were speedily felt. They ate to excess of the
meat thus provided, and while the FLESH was
yet between their TEETH many of them died.
Our people would do well to study this
experience of the children of Israel, and learn
the lesson that it teaches."

EGW: EAT MEAT? YOU HAVE GROSS,
PERVERTED TASTE!

"God did not provide for the flesh of dead
animals to compose the diet for man. It is a
gross, perverted taste that will accept such
food. To think of dead flesh rotting in the
stomach is revolting."

My husband told me that we are eating vegetarian turkey this year as the turkey was a vegetarian.

By the way after reading all of this I felt like the part in the GRINCH story where he even took the roast beast................

Enjoy whatever feast you will be having tomorrow. VAL

EGW: RAW FLESH OFFENSIVE TO ALL NOT
DEPRAVED BY UNNATURAL APPETITES

What is more repulsive to the sense of smell
than a shop where flesh meats are kept for
sale? The smell of the raw flesh is offensive to
all whose senses have not been depraved by
culture of the unnatural appetites. What more
unpleasant sight to a reflective mind than the
beasts slain to be devoured?
