Recently, due to my special concern for SDA college students, I carefully researched the online card catalogues of several Adventist colleges and universities. I wanted to find out if Christian "pilgrimage" literature was available to the students(e.g., classics like SABBATH IN CRISIS, CULTIC DOCTRINE OF SDAs, THE WHITE LIE, PROPHETESS OF HEALTH, and THE DISAPPOINTED: MILLERISM AND MILLINARIANISM IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY).

Interestingly, most SDA college libraries have all or most of these books. Some are buried deep within the Special Documents Division and/or Adventist Heritage Center. Being housed in such a special center, these books cannot be checked out--although they can be read while at the library. Usually, only rare, old books need the protection of such safekeeping. While visiting the Union College library several weeks ago, the librarian informed me that they were "sneaky" about any documents or books in the Adventist Heritage Room. With no separate card catalogue for the Heritage Room, researchers have to rely on the general card catalogue. Unfortunately, a researcher would need to know the author or title of a book that they typically refer to as "controversial literature." I still don't understand why they had CULTIC DOCTRINE in the Heritage Center. It is readily available to the public. One professor told me it was because the parents of students might get upset or deface the book.

Furthermore, I noticed that most Adventist libraries (except WWC and PUC) referred to these books as "controversial literature" in their description. Southern Adventist University (Collegedale, Tennesee) was the ONLY educational center that had NO "heretical" books at all. Sadly, SAU students are unable to find a theological balance at their McKee Library. The only book, even close to any heresy there, was a defense book prepared by the White Estate.

The most encouraging and exciting part of this research, reveals that several of the books listed above, are currently checked out (i.e., James White Library at AU). Apparently, some Adventist seminarians and others are objectively seeking God's truth, the counterpart of Adventism. Indeed, the printed page quietly speaks the truth without an argument. SHARE YOUR FAITH--THE LITERATURE WAY!

Hi Dennis, I have been able to check out some of these books from Andrews University through inter-library loan using the WorldCat system. simply go to your local library web site http://www.city.lib.state.us click on article search your library id card is user name and last four digits of your home phone number is password.

where city = name of city your library is in
state = 2 letter abrv like mi, oh, ny, etc.,

get the email address for your interlibrary loan person, send requests to her/him with your library card number in the subject line.

Some public libraries charge for this service, like $5 or $10 per book, but most have this service for free.
