While unpacking a box today, I found my copy of:

Advent Singing: A collection of fifty early Adventist hymns.

I haven't read them all, but I'm wondering, did EGW ever write a hymn? If so, what was it about?

The following "hymn" makes me wonder about what "god" these people were singing to.

I'll post the three stanzas and follow with the chorus.

SMOKING AND CHEWING SONG

Chewing in the parlor, Smoking in the street,
Choking with cigar smoke, Everyone you meet;
Spitting on the pavement, Spitting on the floor.
Is there such enslavement? Is there such a bore?

[This next stanza is GROSS!]

Puddles in the corners, Swelling into one,
Forming lakes and rivers, Drying in the sun.
Maidens never marry Men who smoke or chew!
If they use tobacco, They will never do.

Many carry spices, Cinnamon and cloves,
Make use of your eyesight, Make use of your nose;
For when you are married, Spice they throw away;
And your loving husband Smokes and chews all day.

CHORUS

Chewing! Smoking! Spitting! Choking!
Sending clouds a whirling in everybody's face.
Chewing in the parlor, Spitting on the floor,
Is there such enslavement? Is there such a bore?

When I'm in church, I'd prefer to sing about the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, or at least sing to Them.

Who were these early SDAs singing to in this song?

I guess I shouldn't say "early SDAs." Although it was written in 1880, it is set to an arrangement written in 1988!

That is really crazy, Steve. You need to take a serious trip to the city dump!

I just joined the choir at church, I'm so excited! The 700 club is coming next week to do a story on our pastor's new book "Kisses From the Father" and it will air on Father's day, anyways we sing some hoopin' songs! It is the coolest choir I've ever seen! Sure beats "Bringing in the Sheaves"

What's a sheave anyways????

You know those old-fashioned pictures showing harvested grain tied into bundles standing in the field? (Not bales but standing stalks bundled into large "bouquets" of wheat,,,) Well, each of those bundles is a sheaf. It's related to Jesus saying the fields were white and ready for harvest--pray for workers to reap it. The sheaves are the harvested grain. Souls, in other words---

Great song lyrics, Steve. I know I certainly made sure I married a man who didn't smoke or chew!! He is a vegetarian, though...!

Praising God for freedom in Jesus AND a husband who shares my joy in Him!

Hi Sabra. You're right, it does belong in a dump. But I think I'll keep it along with a few other SDA "treasures" that I've held onto. I find some of the strongest anti-Christian sentiments in official SDA literature.

It's nice to be able to point to it when necessary. Perhaps for my edification rather than trying to tear anyone else down.

Of course, I also was singing to another "god" while in Adventism. I'm beyond the anger and into joy. I actually read this stuff on occasion and have a good laugh over it at times.

O HAPPY DAY! O HAPPY DAY!

One of our daughters just called us, and she related the good news that the College View SDA Church had sent her a letter informing her that she is no longer a member. She requested that her name be removed in early December, 2002.

Oh, happy day. (No, not Sabbath, but TODAY!)
Oh, happy day, (and every day, when we hear His voice in our hearts.)
When Jesus walked (among us after resurrection);
And when He walked (away from death and the grave),
He washed my sins away. (with His blood, once for all time.)

Great news, Dennis.

That is great Dennis, what the heck took them so long? Were they thinking she would change her mind? I'm thinking if I asked on Dec 1 for my memebership to be dropped, I want it dropped by Dec. 2.

Glad it's done anyways, they never sent me any such letter so I'm probably still on there for numbers sake.

They even had my husband on there and he told them he had no interest in being an SDA, when they tried to hold bible study with him he would just look at them like they were nuts. He said, "Do you really believe that there is going to be a Sunday Law?" The pastor looked even a little embarrased that he did infact believe such a thing. My husband was polite but he said, "that is never going to happen." They didn't care, put him on the books anyways, said if one family memeber is on the book the whole family is. WEIRDOS!

I just ran across a little book printed by Pacific Press in 1975 called "Jessie Meets a Prophet". It's the (true story) of a little girl living in New Zealand who is greatly honored to meet Mrs. White. Make no bones about it, you sda's lurking on this site, all through this book EGW is referred to as a prophet sent by God for this modern age. Colleen, if you still have my mailing address then please send me your mailing address (not e-mail because I'm using the computer at the library now, it has to be the snail mail) and I will send the book to you as a gift. In your ministry to reach out to sda's it might come in handy. It's really a whopper of a book.

Sabra,

The SDA Church must have a business meeting in order to drop one's membership. Usually, business meetings only happen twice a year in larger churches.

In our case, it took eight months in 2000 (due to GC Session, campmeeting, etc.). I kept reminding them by letter, email, and phone calls. October 16, 2000 was the day the business meeting officially granted our request. Sylvia and I joyfully regard this date as our FREEDOM DAY.

In awe of Calvary,

In December, I handed my letter to a pastor "friend" at La Sierra University Church. Haven't heard from him, he doesn't return phone calls, the church just can't seem to find him when I call (multiple times).

What? Is little 'ole me threatening? What could I have to say that would possible be intimidating?

Except for the fact that this pastor has admitted that he's a "former Adventist" still on the inside, and he probably doesn't really believe any of the heretical doctrines.

So he may be worse than the average honest person. Doesn't believe, but is teaching others to believe lies.

Sounds like Lucif... Oops. A little too strong perhaps?

Dennis, how did your daughters get such "swift" paper-shuffling out of a dead church board?

OOPS!

Just read the rest of your message, Dennis. Thanks for the answer. I see you were anticipating that.

I like that: Freedom Day. I may adopt that too whenever I find out which date it is, even thought it happened spiritually three years ago.
